Posted March 9, 200817 yr The introduction of 24-hour drinking has been a catastrophic "mistake" which has turned Britain’s town centres into no-go areas in the evenings, local council leaders have warned the Government. Sir Simon Milton, the head of the Local Government Association which represents all councils in England and Wales, urged Gordon Brown to grant local residents the power to block late licences and said that the price of alcohol should be raised. Are there are any positives that can be drawn from the experiment? Have you taken advantage of longer drinking hours or are you more wary of visiting town centres at night since the law was changed? Should we accept that Britain needs tighter licensing laws than other countries or can we one day aspire to replicating the continental café culture here? And if 24-hour drinking is not the solution, how else can we combat the curse of binge drinking and its associated health and crime problems? Source: Sunday Telegraph
March 9, 200817 yr I know from experience when pubs closed at 11 that at 10.45 I would order 2 pints before last orders and drink them as fast as I can and it is around chucking out time that most fights occur so I am in favour of the idea of drinking when one wants as can pace sessions instead of having to drink really fast before pub closes What should be banned is promotions that encourage binge drinking 2 for 1 offers, happy hours and that kind of thing, there should be a ban on those as that just encourages people to get wasted and the resulting disorder Keep 24 hr drinking but ban special promotions and happy hours
March 10, 200817 yr I think the idea made sense as pissheads would be coming out of pubs and clubs and different times, rather than out the chucking out time and therefore makes less strain for emergency services and less people around to start fighting with.
March 11, 200817 yr To be honest, I'm really not sure where all this "24 Hour" drinking is actually taking place.... Every pub round me shuts down round about midnight/1am.....
