Damon managed to rake up a news article about Eminem and Razorlight among others featuring at a concert being held in Hyde Park for Nelson Mandela. Intruiged by this, I did a little research and found this article, which explains everything in a little more detail:

Will Smith is to host a concert celebrating Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday this summer.

The Hollywood actor and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith have agreed to front the star-studded event in Hyde Park on June 27 after being asked by the iconic former South African leader. As well as recognising the landmark date, the event will raise money for 46664, Mandela’s AIDS charity.

A source told The Sun: “Will Smith is a big fan of Nelson and wanted to help out. Nelson is so inspirational and so many artists want to be involved. Razorlight, Keane, Queen and Annie Lennox are definites. U2, the Spice Girls and Sir Paul McCartney could join them and Eminem’s up for it too.

“We think it will be Nelson Mandela’s last international public appearance, which will make it even more special.”

Should Eminem agree to perform it would be his first major concert appearance since his self-imposed retirement in 2005.

The event will be attended by 45,000 music fans, and special guests will include Princes William and Harry, former US President Bill Clinton and his wife Hillary, who is currently running to become the next President.

The first 46664 concert was held in Cape Town, South Africa, in 2003. There have since been events in Norway and Spain. The significance of 46664 is that it was Mandela’s inmate number during his imprisonment in apartheid South Africa from 1964 until 1990.

From the actual 46664 website:

46664, together with Nelson Mandela’s other charity organisations, has announced its plans to celebrate Mr Mandela’s 90th birthday this year.

46664 Communications and Public Relations Manager Chantal Cuddumbey, addressing dignitaries and the press at the Victory Theatre in Houghton, Johannesburg, today, outlined some of the major events and campaigns that 46664 will host during the year. These include two international concerts, a charity event at the Royal Albert Hall, a symphonic presentation called A Portrait of Mandela to tour the USA, and the release of special edition 90th birthday 46664 bangles.

“Most of the celebrations are concentrated on South Africa, as they should be,” said Cuddumbey. “However, given Mr Mandela’s iconic status and the global scope of the work he has championed, it is mainly the task of 46664 to commemorate Mr Mandela’s birthday on a global scale, so as to include the peoples of the world in these celebrations. There will nevertheless be a particular emphasis on the global youth, who are the main target of the 46664 HIV/AIDS campaign,” she added.

“Jointly with the other Mandela organisations, we will soon launch a global ‘birthday wishes campaign’ which will give people all around the world the opportunity to send their personal messages to Mr Mandela through the following media: SMS, MMS and online. We are in the process of negotiating with cellular networks around the world to make this possible. Online messages will be facilitated through all the Mandela organisation websites.

“Mr Mandela announced in London last year that there would be a 46664 concert at Hyde Park in London this year. It is indeed fitting that 20 years after the ‘Free Mandela’ concert which was held at Wembley Stadium, London will be the city hosting an event to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s life and legacy. Details of the London 46664 concert in Hyde Park on 27 June will be announced within the next few weeks, and we are happy to say that the reaction from the world of celebrity and entertainment has been amazing!

“Also in London, we are extremely pleased that the one and only charity slot at the Royal Albert Hall has been allocated to 46664 for September 18. Details of that fundraising event will follow in due course.

“And in the United States, A Portrait of Mandela, a spectacular symphonic presentation of Nelson Mandela’s life, will tour 15 US cities as from July. The production was developed by the playwright Welcome Msomi and narrated by Mr Mandela’s daughter, Zindzi Mandela. Hopefully it will be as well received in the United States as it was in South Africa a few years ago.

“The annual 46664 World AIDS Day concert, we can confirm, will be staged in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on Sunday, 30 November and the planning process is progressing well.

“And finally, we are pleased to announce that 46664 in conjunction with Coutts Incorporated will launch its range of silver, gold and platinum 46664-branded bangles in June. Five hundred special edition 90th birthday bangles will be produced for a special fundraising event in London.

“In addition, there are several other South African and international events that are in the process of being secured and the media will be kept informed as soon as they have been confirmed.”

Earlier, Nelson Mandela Foundation Chairperson Prof Jakes Gerwel honoured Mr Mandela’s contributions to society. “He decided to dedicate his life to the principles of freedom, non-racism and non-sexism. And in the end, South Africa triumphed “ we all triumphed.”

Prof Gerwel said the birthday events programme, entitled “A Celebration of Ideas”, demonstrated Mr Mandela’s and the organisations’ “commitment to work for the upliftment of our country over at least the next 90 years.”

The event was attended by Nelson Mandela himself, his wife, Graça Machel and other family members, invited dignitaries, the media, and representatives from Mr Mandela’s five formal charities: 46664, the Nelson Mandela Foundation, the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, the Mandela Rhodes Foundation, and the Nelson Mandela Institute for Educational and Rural Development.

Mr Mandela will turn 90 on July 18 this year, and this landmark birthday will be celebrated with a wide range of activities by all the charities, working closely with one another.

If you want to check out more on all this, or donate something check out the official 46664.com site, lots of useful info on there, makes for an interesting read

I hadn't realised that these concerts had been happening for the last 5 years, so hopefully all this will be being televised
