Ah, all the negative publicity about alcohol generated by a "leaked" government story about the failings of 24 hour drinking make sense now.

hardly going to stop binge drinking

not too much to affect me :kink:

don't drink, drive, or smoke, although rising fuel does knock on to public transport

most of this stuff has been in the papers for days, so nothing surprising really, a complete bore by one of the most boring politicians of all time.

lol.. youre right m8.... ive taken no interest at all in this budget, the first time for years.

doesnt bother me...i shop in france!

same here - I laughed out loud at the 11p on cigarettes - does he honestly think this will affect 90% of smokers in the UK? Not a jot - everyone I know gets their ciggies abroad these days - after all, I wouldn't want to be lining the governments pockets with my (in their draconian eyes) heinous habit, now, would I?

As for fuel - it's a scandal - my local garages are charging a colossal £1.09 and £1.08 a litre this week - well, they were before the budget - God knows what it'll be now. Shameful.

when will the people of britain rebel against the ridiculous price of fuel?..

We did have Fuel Protests though, didn't we...? A while back, petrol stations were blockaded by trucks and lorries, but I reckon it needs to be widened to address the ever rising costs of heating and lighting, and the ridiculous amounts of VAT the Govt takes off for that.. The kind of past action we had clearly needs to be repeated though, the Govt didn't get the message then, I think they clearly need another, much bigger one... I'm all for anything that causes grief to the powers that be... The taxation on fuel is just obscene, and, as usual, it hits the poorest the hardest; the US, Canada and our European neighbours dont face anything like the taxation on fuel that we do in this country.... There seriously needs to be some kind of civil disobedience and disorder over this issue (as well as a legion of other issues, but that's another story)...

Spot on.. I think Marcus Brigstocke put it brilliantly on his BBC 4 show last night when he used the example of 3p on a litre of cider.. He got out a 3 litre bottle of "White Lightening" which cost £2.89 (before the tax rise) and basically ridiculed the Govt's attempts to address the binge drinking culture...

"Wot, £2.98!! That's almost THREE QUID!!"

I read today that, if Darling gets his wicked way and alcohol continues to rise above inflatiion at this rate - people in the UK will be paying the best part of £7 - yes £7 - for a pint of lager by 2012.

What with pubs like ghost towns already with the smoking ban, and more people now set to avoid watering holes with these obscene price rises, is it any wonder that pubs are closing at a record rate? FOUR PUBS every DAY closed this past year in the UK - that's 1,500 less pubs - an all-time record.

If I was in the licensing trade, I'd be a very, very worried man. I spoke to a guy in the trade recently - he said it was in total freefall - with many landlords stuck with businesses that don't pay that they can't sell.

We're already seeing the closure of many of the old workingmen's clubs - which look set to become extinct within the next 10 years (how's that for a Labour government, eh? ) - will this government be happy now they've signed the death warrant for every type of pub in the land?

Sorry but £7 is ridiculous. It would NEVER happen. Even if you said at the moment it costs £3.50, which is giving it a very high price because it's not that much in the vast majority of places, then he'd have to increase it by 100% over just four budgets! He only did it by 4p this year,he's have to increase his increase by nearly 200% each year!

the smoking ban has absolutely no effect on the pubs i frequent :)

Neither me. My local back home is always as busy as it used to be. And as a student, I've yet to meet a single student who smokes who's put off by it.
Also just look at how much the 'I bet I can find 1,000,000 people who DON'T want smoking back in pubs' facebook groups outnumber the groups that say the opposite statement  My pubs are always packed as the important thing is still there, OTHER PEOPLE :)

The pub closure figures speak for themselves, however uppity, pious and anti-smoking you care to be - since the smoking ban, pub closures have gone up over 65% - so it's hardly a coincidence. You think pub takings have increased since the smoking ban? They haven't. And whilst people numbers, to the casual occasional drinker, may appear to be just the same - the fact is this - people stay in bars for a far less time now the ban is enforced - hence they spend far less money. As predicted, the very vocal and very tedious anti-smoking brigade - they simply haven't been frequenting the places they were hyperventilating about, when they were breathlessly protesting that they were too "smoky" and they could, ahem "catch cancer from second hand smoke". Strange that, isn't it? Armchair whiners - they rarely leave the comfort of their armchair long enough to venture to the very bars they've destroyed - they're probably all too busy writing angry letters to the Daily Mail, making telephone complaints to anyone, anywhere who will listen - or catching up on their macrame. Now they've got what they want - it's on to the next campaign. Bugger the businesses they've destroyed, bugger the people they've upset, bugger the jobs they've lost.

As for a pint costing up to £7 by 2012 - yesterday, the chancellor announced booze prices will automatically increase by 2% above the rate of inflation every year - if we have the same government, based on a pint in most cities costing £3.60, a pint, in 2012, will cost £6.47. Hardly ridiculous - and maybe the person emphatically stating "It will NEVER happen" would care to bookmark this page and check back year on year..... there are lots of things we thought would "NEVER happen" that HAVE happened in recent times.

Which cities are these? Even the most expensive pubs in Nottingham (my home town) and Sheffield (where I'm at uni) you rarely pay that much. I have no sympathy for people that pay £3.60 for a pint, you really don't need to!

And saying inflation stands at 3% for the next 4 years (so an increase of 5%) would give prices of £3.78, £3.97, £4.17 and £4.38! Now unless you're saying the other £2.09 is ENTIRELY profit of pub owners and brewers that statistic is MILES out!

the disgraceful thing is we were paying far less for fuel when the protests occurred -_-

You're talking about up north - everything's cheaper there.

Try drinking in Bristol, Cardiff, London, Brighton, parts of Birmingham, Devon, Bournemouth... I think you'll find the average price is at least £3...well, I KNOW the average price is £3. And that's just pubs. Clubs are an entirely different matter - add another £1 on - at least. Of course, if you frequent tatty holes like Wetherspoons pubs, things are different, but even Wetherspoons are more expensive down south than they are up north, remember.

And who on earth would think inflation will stay at 3% for the next 4 years? Are you serious? Taking into account fluctuations - the automatic 2% rise above inflation would actually work like this:

2009 - £4.58

2010 - £5.15

2011 - £5.78

2012 - £6.47

I'd do a little statistical homework if I were you ^_^
