Should they be able to do this when they are off duty, free from trouble?

Or will it just attract abuse from certain factions of our society?

What do you think?

The standing of soldiers in society is overblown

They do a noble job defending this country but anyone who lives anywhere near a barracks or army town would know on a Friday and Saturday night it is like a bad night in Vietnam with tanked up squaddies acting worse than chavs

Spot on mate.. They act like bloody vermin when they're out on R&R, and I make no apologies for saying that... My cousin was in the service, a commissioned officer, and he was absolutely disgusted by the behaviour of some of the guys under his command...

Soldiers in uniform on the streets of this country sends out a very, very dodgy message.. This is NOT a military society, and we should resist any and all attempts at normalising the sight of soldiers in uniform on the streets for whatever purpose...

I aint saying they guys in Peterborough deserved the abuse or anything, but we're living in a time when we're in a war which the majority of society feels is morally wrong, good use of Vietnam as a metaphor mate, Iraq is pretty much the equivalent of the Vietnam war...Asoldier on the streets in uniform is bound to be a target for the outrage much of society feels about what is going on in Iraq, rightly or wrongly....

What I have to question is the Govt's involvement in this debate.. It appears to me that Gordon Brown is actively encouraging soldiers to wear the uniform in the streets... Well, the Govt being nebulously involved in this debate just screams out to me that this is, yet again, another example of the Govt using servicemen and women for propaganda purposes. Just like they did with Harry...
