to me black music was at its best in the 60's, i loved the style of stax, motown and atlantic. heres my track listing :)

stevie wonder - 'i was made to love her' imho THE best soul lovesong of all time, it oozes emotion, soul, and imho was far superior to his material that followed.

supremes - 'where did our love go'? they did many good tracks but this must be their best.

four tops - 'bernadette' imho their best track, superb melody/harmonies.

jackie wilson - '(your love keeps lifting me) higher and higher' another love song that must rate as one of the very best of all time, super lyrics, uptempo melody, timeless classic soul.

martha reeves and the vandellas - 'nowhere to run (nowhere to hide)' melody was motowns trump card and this had it! melody, harmonies, echo.. love it!

stevie wonder - 'uptight (everythings alright)' his first stomping track. brilliant.

four tops - 'if i were a carpenter' a superior cover of bobby darins original.

smokey robinson and the miracles - 'going to a go-go' imho their best.

otis reading - 'hard to handle' i reckon his finest track, great soul.

sly and the family stone - 'dance to the music' possibly the first great dance track?...lol. funky soul , superb!

isley brothers - 'put yourself in my place' another highly charged emotional soul track, melody, harmony, superb sound!

sam and dave - 'soul man' excellent track.

i could have done a 'volume two' ...lol.. theres so many good tracks eligible.. more isleys, miracles, temptations, supremes, stevie wonder, r.dean taylor, martha reeves, arthur conley ...

stevie wonder - 'i was made to love her' .......good song however I preferred "For once in my life" although his early 70's stuff like "hes misstra know it all, superstition and Living in the city" are my all time faves by him

supremes - 'where did our love go'? good song too but I liked "Stop in the name of love"

four tops - 'bernadette' ............classic I also like "reach out and I'll be there"

jackie wilson - '(your love keeps lifting me) higher and higher' ....another classic , but I also like "I get the sweetest feeling"

martha reeves and the vandellas - 'nowhere to run (nowhere to hide)'

smokey robinson and the miracles - 'going to a go-go' ......my favourite is "Tears of a clown"

otis reading - 'hard to handle' ......yep, but "Sitting on the dock of the bay" is the one for me

sly and the family stone - 'dance to the music'

isley brothers - 'put yourself in my place' ... I liked " Behind the painted smile"

sam and dave - 'soul man' excellent track. It sure is

I would add...........

Temptations ....Just my Imagination

Some great songs by some great artists, surely one of the richest periods for classic music that still sounds good today.

i never considered that most artists most popular songs were their best. hence 'i was made to love her' over 'for once in my life' (which WAS a good track, 'hard to handle' over 'dock of the bay' (easily as it happens... imho one of otises worst tracks!), i like 'behind a painted smile' and that would make it onto volume 2! lol, but 'put yourself in my place' is far more soulful and melodic imho. 'tears of a clown', and 'reach out ill be there' were good, no doubt about it ... but not my favs.

..... oh... and indeed imho the 60's was easily the best era for black music, someone once said (in 68 i think) that motown would die in 1970..... it all but did. imho black music has never been so good... in fact.... nowhere near.

hard to say..as there are some fricking brilliant records in disco, Phily soul, blacksplotation era, early chicago house, detroit techno, old skool rap, early blues, jazz...

however 60s Motown era could be said as some of the best black pop music

For me black music was at its best in the 60s & 70s.

Motown, Atlantic, Stax, Philly.

They were real talented singers then unlike the untalented RNB & Hip Hop of today.

Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight, Temptations, Isley Brothers, 4 Tops, Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, James Brown, Otis Redding, Eddie Floyd, O'Jays all brilliant - need I go on.

philly, or 'sweet soul' (never heard the term 'philly soul' before) was APPAULING!

they took soul and dressed it up in spangly clothes and put it on the caberet circuit... i dont think ive ever known such a dumbing down of such a raw emotion EVER.

I LOVE Dance To The Music it is awesome, and also LOVE Hard To Handle otis redding at his best imo. And Your Love keeps lifting me higher and higher is a classic! My fave isley Bros song is Summer breeze and The Miracles only solo hit love machine is cheesy but I love it, especially the 'oh yeahs' haha!

There's just too much to choose from, so here's a random selection.

Ray Pollard - The Drifter Awesome soul ballad that just gets bigger and bigger as it goes on.

Wilson Pickett - Land Of 1000 Dances The best version of this song - and a great party track.

The Temptations - Get ready Great uptempo track that tends to get forgotten in favour of their later 'social conscience' stuff.

The Four Tops - I'm In A Different World I never tire of Levi Stubbs' voice. One of their lesser hits, but still a classic.

The Contours - Do You Love Me? Another great party track. A hit in an inferior version by Brian Poole and the Tremeloes!

Judy Street - What? Northern Soul classic covered by Soft Cell.

Otis Redding - (Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay Obvious maybe, but still a haunting, soulful track.

Bobby Hebb - Love, Love, Love Best known for 'Sunny', this is a good Northern dancer.

Sam Cooke - A Change Is Gonna Come Quite possibly the most moving song ever committed to vinyl. Monumental.

The Drifters - I'll Take You Where The Music's Playing Forget their 70s naffness, their 60s stuff is great.

Archie Bell and the Drells - Tighten Up Thought by some as the first disco record - and it's from 1968!

The Four Tops - Baby I Need Your Loving Levi Stubbs again - what a voice!

This, of course, should be a four CD box set! Great music.

A great selection but your Judy Street song has reminded me of a better song that was made famous by Soft Cell...... that just missed the cut from my selection

Gloria Jones - Tainted Love

The less said of the wretched versions of that Northern Soul classic by Marilyn Manson & worst of all the Pussycat Dolls the better....
