I thought I'd start a Beth Rowley thread. If you haven’t heard her then you should take a listen. I downloaded her EP 'Violets' before Christmas and was impressed with Beth’s vocal range. As mentioned in other threads Beth has been lumped in with lots of other female vocalists of late, rather unfairly in my opinion. Of course they all have a similarity in that they're all female that’s where it stops though.

It seems unfortunate that she is seemingly being pushed by her label (Universal/Blue Thumb) down a more 'poppy' route when her real talent, I feel, lies in blues and gospel. You may have heard her song 'Oh my life' being played all over BBc Radio 2- a song which I think is good 'n catchy, I've found my self singing it a few times, but feels a bit of a commercial concession when compared to her other track 'Nobodies fault but mine'. 'Oh My Life' is not at all a general representation of her music at all.

I've seen her live several times and caught her again recently supporting Newton Faulkner at Camden's Roundhouse where once again she was fantastic. The rest of the audience seemed to love her stuff as well. She has a somewhat understated stage presence which is soon over looked when she opens her mouth. Her live sound is what I'd describe as 'real and raw' which is refreshing when lots of other live music is just too slick and emotionless. Her Roundhouse gig was only about 40 mins and I could have listened to her for a lot longer. Newton Faulkner was fantastic too. Has any one else heard Beth live? If so what did you think?

i dont like that 'Oh My Life' record - but my mum does (even tho its says 'Oh My Life' a billion times). however think you might be right as their was a Rowley track on the last mojo soul and blues collection (the current one is a great ska cd) and was much better than that

I agree. There have been some really good Mojo Cds of late. The April Cd with Beth on was jammed full of fantastic tracks. I've played it loads. I'll have to get the May issue.

By the way Beth Rowley performed two tracks on Radio 2's Friday Night Is Music Night on fri. 4th of April. She sang 'Nobodies Fault But Mine' and 'Oh My Life' with an orchestral backing. Oh My Life was played differently to the single version and it sounded really good.

Here's the link if you want to 'listen again'.Beth on Radio 2 Fri 4th April.

This is another catchy song in the same vein as her last single 'Oh My Life'. I quite like it.

Caught her London Bush Hall gig on the 16th of April, click here link for the Independent's review of the gig.
