Pimped out on Jools Hollond? A show which is on at an unsocialble hour on fridays when everyone is out. Yeah, that'll sell to the masses...

Compare: Later with Jools Holland a show that goes out at 23:30 Hours on BBC2 on a Friday night and gets between 1.5 & 2 million viewers and X Factor a show that went out weekly for 13 weeks on ITV on a Saturday night and got between 8 to 12 million viewers.

If anyone saw the Paul O'Grady show tonight, a real proper musician who found success in America the hard way KT Tunstall summed up Leona Lewis American success spot on.

You can go on all you want about her blatantly obvious talent, but for anyone to deny that she has not had all the lucky breaks & fast track to success is deluding themselves.

I'd like to know too. I haven't watched O'Grady for ages (not sure whether I like him or not - even though he is a fellow scouser).

Obviously I can't exactly remember what she said. But when asked asked about Leona's success in America She said "God luck to her, she is clearly talented and seems a really nice person".

But what will probably be reported in the papers as it could clearly be construed as knocking her was that she pointed out "she had been touring her ass up & down America "on & off" for over nearly 3 years playing over 400 club dates & radio promos, but what gave her her biggest leg up in America was when a contestant on American Idol covered her alternative-Rock hit "Black Horse & the Cherry Tree" that was in the low reaches of the Top100 so that the song climbed over 50 places the following week on the Billboard chart and gave KT her US breakthrough. So that she became an "overnight success after years of doing the hard work thanks to TV".

Some of the things that are said on this thread still defy belief.

First up, we've got people who clearly haven't done their research before posting what they think is/has been happening. A little bit of time spent doing said thing would have clearly shown that Leona reached #2 in the Hot Digital Songs with one American promo appearance from 5 weeks prior on TRL, which was basically a 4 minute chat and then her video being played. That week, the song went in at #153 in the Hot 100 Digital Chart (it was getting zero airplay at this point). It then went 154-91-41-21-12-2-1 on the digital sales chart, simultaneously running --85-62-41-21-8-1 on the Hot 100. That's 6 weeks of steady progress with ZERO promo, until Oprah in the week she hit #1 on both.

Then there are others who continually refer to the Clive Davis / Simon Cowell argument. Whether she may have been given it all is one argument, but is it beyond the realms of possibility she's been given this chance because of her immense talent, now that it has fully matured into what it is now? Almost without exception, the best artists get signed on the best contracts and get the best material - I can't believe that the justification for this is even being questioned. She's been given the best contract / songs / producers because its not beyond the realms of probability that she could become a global superstar.

And that's not to say she hasn't grafted. Anyone who suggests otherwise is wrong - she's been trying to get into the business since well before she entered X Factor. She may have been given a great shot at global superstardom post X Factor, but the precursor for that was a mixture of hard graft, knocks, and then maturing to a stage where she astounded a large number of not only the British public, but a worldwide audience. Why that shouldn't reap the rewards of what has gone since is beyond me.

Who cares about the US charts. They are so overrated, I mean who did she knock off the number 1 spot, FLO RIDER! It shows how sh!te they are.

Oh dear I'm going to get ridiculed by my comment. :( I MEAN WHAT I SAY!

It was Usher actually ;)

Amy Winehouse beat Leona yes, she had also been out for a year and Leona had been out for less than two months.

It will be interesting to see when all the Leona tv promo & hype dies down if she is still charting as well around the world as Amy Winehouse.

Am i right to think Billboard Hot 100 is published on Wednesdays each week ? but at what time ? Want to see if Mimi knocks Leona off the top. The irony for Leona if she does......... knocked off top spot by one of her idols !

Officially published Thursday but normally leaks around midnight tonight UK time. The digital sales figures will be released in around two to three hours and combined with the rolling mediabase airplay charts you're usually able to tell who is number #1.

However even before then we know it'll definitely be Mariah as she has been top of iTunes all week (ahead of Madonna and Leona) and this closely mirrors the digital sales chart. One Chicago radio station well connected to the Carey camp is claiming Touch My Body has sold 296k, breaking the debut week sales record held by Rihanna's Umbrella. Mariah is also #3 in airplay impressions with Usher at #2 and Chris Brown at #1. Leona will be around #17 in airplay (around 55m behind Usher and Mariah as she has no Urban radio support) with Madonna around #40.

Chart will be:

1) Mariah

2) Madonna

3) Usher

4) Leona - I'd suggest Usher above Leona as she'd need to sell 80k more than him again this week to stay ahead (1m airplay = 1k in sales on the chart). Unlikely.

And that cover was sung by Katherine McPhee

I think Leona will have a sense of pride that it took one of her idols to knock her record off the top spot :)

Looks like this will be the chart with the approximate numbers thrown in:

1. Mariah 400 chart points

2. Usher 253

3. Madonna 245

4. Leona 230

5. Ray J & Yung Berg 220

6. Jordin/Chris Brown 211

7. Lil Wayne ft. StatiC Major 203

8. Chris Brown 196

9. Sara Bareilles 188

10. Flo Rida 182

Madonna lower than expected as she didn't sell as well as I'd thought (25k less - I was assuming Mariah 300k, Madonna 240k, Leona 180k, Usher 130k - real figures 286k, 217k, 187k, 132k).

  • 4 months later...
The billboard charts are really cool right now. I'm hoping Colbie Caillat or Jordan Sparks will be doing UK tours SooN
Interesting that Leona will only this week exit the top 10 of the Hot 100, more than 2 months after her last promo appearance in the US.
I wish Leona would come back over here an release somthing new now!! the US has robbed us of her!! :arrr:
Thanks thisispop.

LOL, it would also be interesting to see if when winehouse vanishes from her daily tabloid exposure around the world- if she is still charting as well. It could be argued that this kind of media exposure is more effective than tv promo appearances, of which by the way leona hasnt done much of lately but her album is still selling well WW.

Leona is still charting as well nearly a year from releasing her album, her second US single is blowing up, and her third Uk single forgive me is a smash waiting to happen. ;)
