To count at least 50% of the act has to be British to qualify so the likes of Foreigner, Air Supply, Londonbeat and Elton John's quarter on That's What Friends Are For are ineligible. Also Olivia Newton John has been classified as Australian (she has a dual passport (born in Oxford)) but as she regards herself as an Australian then I've ruled her out of being eligible.

How weird that ever since the 90s the number ones have been dwindling down.

Let's celebrate the European Continental acts that did it.....like

Domenico Modugno - Volare (Italy)

Falco - Rock me Amadeus (Austria)

Roxette - The Look (Sweden)

Rick Astley had two US No.1's :o

I can't believe between 1997 and 2006 there were none :o I hope Leona and James Blunt are the start of a long line of many...

The U.S. chart has become more and more boring over the years. So let's hope that Leona will be the first of many to change that
They've certainly been getting rarer in the last few years haven't they? I didn't realise the Spice Girls had only had one #1 there though. :o

Although Leona is the first UK female artist to have a US No.1 single for 21 years (that was Kim Wilde in 1987 with her cover version of the Supremes 1966 US#1 You Keep Me Hanging On) she has an even more impressive record is that she is the first to have a US #1 hit since Petula Clark (with Downtown in 1965) to hit the top with her DEBUT single.

Even more impressive she has done it all on downloads only.

What a gal

A Moment Like This wasn't released in the US as Kelly Clarkson had the original as her winning single from American Idol.

Can you imagine what the US would think if she launched there with A Moment Like This

It would be like some major new US talent releasing a cover of Will Young's Evergreen as their debut single in the UK

Samantha Mumba released Divine cover "Lately" in 2002 in the US, only 3 years after the original was a #1 hit. I always thought that was kind of silly. Anyway it failed to chart.

That was when rubbish RnB & Hip Hop began to take over the charts and it's been that way ever since.

After urban the next most popular genre in the US is country.

But Samantha Mumba is not Irish?
