Posted March 28, 200817 yr I don't post on here as much as I did back in the day (ala cool clarity :P ) But I'm hoping some of you could possibly help me out. I'm currently studying media and film at college, specifically a study on modern female action heroes (the likes of lara croft, charlies angles, kill bill etc) . My hypothesis asks 'To what extent do modern female action heroes display masculine traits?' Along with my initial research, I was wondering if a small group of members from the forum would take part in a focus group via msn? If your wondering what a focus group is, basically a small discussion on the said topic/hypothesis! It would be really great to gather some opinions, so I can input my findings into my overall study. Generally I'd like lots of opinions, and I'd basically we just inputting questions and asking for your responses. From previous work I've found this to be a really valuable research method. I would hope some of you would enjoy this, and I couldnt think of a better place to come than the cinema/movie section to get some opinions. Please post back here/message me if you express any interest in this, I'd be very happy :)
April 1, 200817 yr Sounds like an interesting project... Although, if I were you, I'd certainly find time to include Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) from the "Alien" films, she's probably one of the most intersting film heroines from a study point of view.. You will find a lot of reading from Feminist film critics on Ripley I can guarantee it.... Also read up on Sarah Connor from the "Terminator" films, and the character Geena Davis plays in "Long Kiss Goodnight".... If you're going down this path, read articles, books, etc by the following critics - Laura Mulvey (esp. her polemical article, "Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema", you may not agree with her findings - in fact, you probably wont -, but it's a good place to start for generating your own ideas), Barbara Creed, Carol Clover. A really good book to get you going - "Working Girls - Gender and Sexuality in Modern Cinema" by Yvonne Tasker... PM me the link for your focus group, I've not got the internet at home just now (being installed soon.....), but would like to join in your debating as soon as I can.... :)
