Pop idol to star at T in the Park

Will Young will play the Pet Sound Arena at the festival

Pop Idol winner Will Young is to play T in the Park in a move festival organisers believe signals a new direction for the singer.

Indie, rock, guitar and dance acts are the usual fare for the music event at Balado, near Kinross, which this year runs from 11 to 13 July.

Other bands which have recently been added to the bill include Echo and the Bunnymen and the Goo Goo Dolls.

The festival headliners are the Verve, Rage Against the Machine and REM.

'New material'

Will Young will play an acoustic set on the Saturday.

Festival organiser Geoff Ellis said: "Will Young's T debut this year will surprise those who think of him solely as a classic pop artist.

"His career is headed in a cool new direction as his live acoustic sets pay testament to.

"Saturday's Pet Sound Stage line-up will be all the more eclectic for his appearance.

"We can't wait to see him unveil his new material at Balado this summer."

Thanks TT and Julie :cheer:

love it ...wish i could be there

Thanks for bringing that over girls . I was just saying to Julie that I don't think he is moving in a different direction - he's just showing a new audience what we have known for the past six years, KO has some great tracks on it, but they didn't see the light of day and ATL is so not just what he's about. He can do pop but he's not just a pop singer and what better way to show them. As the article says - he's going to suprise a lot of people. He's got his own thread on TITP forum and there are some really good comments on there.

People are talking about him and that's what it's all about.

I'm so made up for him - and I want this album so very very much.

Couldn't agree more munchkin. WAI & ATL are hardly representative of what I believe are the more Will tracks on KO. These releases will I'm sure have been more down to his management & label & probably not Will's choices. It's well documented how hard Will had to fight to release SIO & there was strong rumours that ASABPTB was to be the third single but then we got WAI. These festivals will give Will the chance to showcase what he is really about.

I followed a link to another thread and of course you have the usual comments - and these are the people who I think will be the most surprised. He has a lot of fans out there who already know what he can do - but I doubt the ignoramouses would ever admit they they could be or are wrong about him. I think they call it tunnel vision

What I would say to those who prejudge him but say "But I'd never watch/listen to him" is .... take the blinkers off for a while and listen to his music - THEN come back with a sensible comment. I don't think Will really expects them to go out and buy his album but to just see him in a different light.

I was surprised by how many on the festival sites seemed happy he was on the bill ..i expected far more negative comments...even those who said they would not watch him said he was talented and more so then a lot of the artists who are performing there

I had to laugh at one comment about the one token pop act already being there and someone posted "Which token pop act would that be" and reeled off a fistful of others appearing. And another said he'd rather have a pop act who knows they are than a pop band acting like an 'indie'. It would seem that some rock bands/chicks aren't as 'cool' as they think they are and there's more prejudice in the 'indie' world than the traditionalist Jazz world.

That's what happens when you put yourself in a box. :P

There's one thing we all know, Will will put on a fantastic live set, sing in tune and you'll be able to understand every word he sings. Not that that counts for much after watching some of last years acts, The Killers were my favourites last year.

I'm so pleased that at last Will's able to get out there and show exactly what he's about. As you say Suggy it'll be a great show, in tune and able to be heard.

He's worked bloody hard the last 6/7 years and really does deserve being recognised as more than a "pop act". When I think of some of the so called artistes who have got recognition, and the way Will's been slated and treated in the past, it makes my blood boil. :arrr:

Mine too but at least we have the satisfaction that he's still around & successful when many others have disappeared. :D

I constantly hold that thought TT. :D

I'm still trying to get my head round to him selling a tour so bloody well, that they're having to add extra dates "due to phenomenal demand" and that's after being away for over two years and without his new music even being released yet. :dancing: :yahoo:

We picked a winner & along with thousands of others, have impeccable taste. :yahoo:

Well I jolly well hope that any future advertising for the tour puts stickers across saying "due to phenomenal demand" or "sold out" etc. After all I seem to see it all the time with other acts.
