May 25, 200619 yr Chartbeat from Billboard.com May 25, 2006, Fred Bronson WHO WANTS TO BE A CHAMILLIONAIRE: For the first time in eight years and nine months, a song on the Motown imprint is No. 1 on The Billboard Hot 100, as Rihanna's "SOS" yields to "Ridin'" (Universal Motown) by Chamillionaire featuring Krayzie Bone. The present-day Motown is far removed from the label founded and nurtured by Berry Gordy. It's simply a brand now, owned by Universal Music and used for the company's R&B releases, while the Universal Republic logo is reserved for pop recordings. Still, Chamillionaire brings the famous name back to the top of the chart, for the first time since the week of Oct. 4, 1997, when Boyz II Men held pole position with "4 Seasons of Loneliness." "Ridin'" is the 38th song bearing the Motown name to lead the tally. The run started with Mary Wells' "My Guy," which advanced to No. 1 the week of May 16, 1964. That gives Motown a span of chart-topping hits that stretches over 42 years and three weeks. Motown remains in sixth place among labels with the most No. 1 songs on the Hot 100. The top six: Columbia (95) RCA (60) Capitol (50) Atlantic (42) Epic (40) Motown (38) "Ridin'" is the second Hot 100 chart entry for Chamillionaire and his first No. 1 hit. In January, "Turn It Up" peaked at No. 41. This is Krayzie Bone's second turn at the top, but the first time under his own name. Exactly 10 years ago this week, "Tha Crossroads" by Bone Thugs-N-Harmony was in the third week of an eight-week reign. With "Ridin'" gliding to the head of the class, the rapid turnover of No. 1 songs in 2006 continues. This is the ninth song to move to the top this year, and 2006 is not even half over. In all of 2005, only eight songs moved into the penthouse. THREE FOR THREE: Nelly Furtado maintains her perfect record, as her third chart entry on the Hot 100 becomes her third top 10 hit. "Promiscuous" (Mosley/Geffen) soars 30-9, matching the No. 9 peak of Furtado's first chart song, "I'm Like a Bird." That debut effort reached its peak position five years and one week ago. The follow-up, "Turn Off the Light," shone even brighter, reaching No. 5 the week of Nov. 10, 2001. "Promiscuous" is credited to Nelly Furtado featuring Timbaland. This is the first top 10 hit as an artist for the popular producer. His first chart entry, "Up Jumps Da Boogie," peaked at No. 12 the week of Sept. 20, 1997, and has remained his biggest hit until this week. "Promiscuous" is Timbaland's first chart entry as an artist since "Cop That Sh#!" stopped at No. 95 in August 2003. 25 IN 25: Depeche Mode marks its 25th year of charting on Hot Dance Club Play with its 25th chart entry. "Suffer Well" (Sire/Mute) is the group's seventh chart-topper. The pop-synth outfit from England made its first appearance on the Club Play list the week of April 4, 1981, with "Dreaming of Me," which peaked at a lowly No. 47. The first Depeche Mode song to top this survey was "Strangelove," which spent three weeks at No. 1 in August 1987. It was the group's only No. 1 in the 1980s. There was only one chart-topper in the 1990s as well. "It's No Good" had a one-week reign in June 1997. The other Depeche Mode songs to reach pole position all charted in this decade. Those five No. 1 hits are: "Dream On," one week (2001) "I Feel Loved," two weeks (2001) "Freelove," one week (2002) "Precious," two weeks (2005) "Suffer Well," one week to date (2006)
May 25, 200619 yr Ashley Parker Angel and LL/JLo were breaking records a few weeks ago. How have they fallen so quickly?
May 25, 200619 yr Ashley Parker Angel and LL/JLo were breaking records a few weeks ago. How have they fallen so quickly? Huge influx of downloads at first, and because they've got little airplay support both of them have dropped. Mariah gone.
May 25, 200619 yr Nelly Furtado is getting huge digital sales and increasing airplay so she'll almost definitely be top 5 next week. Possibly #1 although I don't have the figures to back that up.
May 25, 200619 yr She's releasing Promiscuous exclusively in the US I think... maybe Maneater will be the second single?
May 25, 200619 yr Ah right, i really like Promiscuous but it wouldn't do well in the uk. Looks like Maneater will do very well, at my college alot of people seem to be playing/talking about it. The other times at college iv seen so much hype were for the sugababes - push the button and black eyed peas - my humps. So i can see it doing well.
