The Elvis photo on the billboard is by famous photographer George Kalinsky, who recently discovered many never-before-seen Elvis photos in his collection. The image is from a 1972 performance at Madison Square Garden where Kalinsky captured some photographs of Elvis. An exhibit of these never before seen photos will open at Graceland in May.

April 9, 200817 yr Lost Elvis Presley pictures turn up Wednesday, April 9th 2008, 4:00 AM Lost" pictures of The King have left a New York cameraman all shook up. Nearly 36 years after Elvis Presley rocked Madison Square Garden, George Kalinsky raided his files, hunting for pictures he'd taken of the concert and never printed. http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y48/elvis1959/gal_elvis5.jpg He dug out nearly 100 never-before-seen shots, including some Graceland officials consider the most iconic ever taken. "I thought I had eight or 10 good photos, but I found four rolls of film," said Kalinsky, the Garden's official photographer for 40 years. "It was mind-boggling. I'd totally forgotten that I'd taken that many." The collection is headed to Graceland for an exhibit. One picture - showing a white jumpsuited Elvis, his cape billowing behind him - stands 36 feet tall on a Times Square billboard, part of a display honoring the world-famous snapper. "That is the one Graceland said was the most iconic," said Kalinsky, who met Elvis backstage after the show and described him as "very humble." Kalinsky, 64, has taken pictures of every major Madison Square Garden event - including Muhammad Ali's fight with Joe Frazier, a Jimi Hendrix show and the Pope's 1979 visit. He found the films after being invited to take part in a Times Square display celebrating "Great Moments in New York." He had asked Graceland for permission to use another of his shots, and they asked if he'd search to see if he had any he'd never published. "This is an incredible and rare find," said Kevin Kern, spokesman for Elvis Presley Enterprises. "It is as if George found a treasure chest of never before seen Elvis photos." April 11, 200817 yr It sure was a spectacular jumpsuit for a spectacular show :cheer: Seems like the billboard is making news everywhere B) Not from MSG, but another unseen picture of Elvis shows up and a great story behind it too  http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y48/elvis1959/unseen.jpg The recently discovered Madison Square Garden pictures of George Kalinsky, seem to have triggered the attention of several journalists. Some published "a best off" in their news magazines, and others even went looking in their own archives. Julie Muhlstein, Columnist for the Herald, dug up a 'family shot' with Elvis and her father-in-law, and she asks her readers to go looking for unseen snapshots of Elvis. Here is her picture, and her story: Rare. Never-before-seen. Wow! That's how a newly discovered photo of Elvis Presley was described in Thursday's Herald. Reading the Associated Press article over breakfast, and seeing the 1972 image of a caped King of Rock 'n' Roll at Madison Square Garden in New York, I had to laugh. Then I had to go check. Yep, Elvis was still in the house. Before leaving for work, I managed to find my prized Presley picture. It was tucked in an envelope of photos of my late father-in-law, David Muhlstein. In the late 1950s, David Muhlstein was news director for a Dallas radio station, KLIF. There's a mention of him in a book called "Gordon McLendon: The Maverick of Radio." McLendon owned KLIF, and in the early '50s had pioneered the top-40 music format at the Texas station. All I know about my Presley photograph is second-hand information, stories from my late husband and his mom. Apparently the young Elvis dropped by the radio station one day to promote a new single -- I don't know which one. Found in boxes of my husband's stuff were several Presley 45 rpm records from the 1950s and early '60s. They're marked "not for sale," so they likely came from the radio station. The picture has no date on it, but I know my father-in-law worked at KLIF in 1958 and 1959, when Presley would have been 23 or 24. Perhaps a publicity shot, the photo shows a dreamy Presley, with the slightest hint of a lip curl, in all his "Hound Dog" glory. My father-in-law is on the right in the picture, and looks to be waiting for the star to sign an autograph. I don't know who the two men are on the left; both appear to be thrilled by the encounter. All the men are wearing the era's white shirts, skinny ties and big-shouldered jackets. Whenever I look at it, I wish that photo could come to life. I'd love to hear the banter between the King and the man who died before I met his son. When I went to find the picture Thursday, I was half surprised I still had it. Knowing that my 21-year-old musician son has a few kitschy Elvis items, I thought maybe the photo had become part of his collection. Ah, but it's still mine. Reading about never-before-seen Presley pictures, I wondered if they're really all that rare. If I have Elvis in an envelope, how many others do? 1963's "It Happened at the World's Fair" was set in Seattle. Anybody out there have a Kodak Brownie snapshot of Presley being kicked in the shin by 10-year-old Kurt Russell? There must be hundreds, even thousands of never-before-seen Presley pictures. The New York discovery is just the thing to flush them out. Seeing that young, cool Elvis, I couldn't resist. I'll go first. Do you have a snapshot of Elvis Presley? April 12, 200817 yr Elvis unearthed! Dorset photographer rediscovers trove of performance pics JOHN WALLER, Staff Writer Article Launched: 04/12/2008 03:20:22 AM EDT Saturday, April 12 DORSET — Long-lost photographs of Elvis Presley's first concert in New York City surfaced recently after being filed away and forgotten about for nearly 36 years. Photographer George Kalinski, a part-time Dorset resident for the past 22 years, accidentally discovered the prized images, which have created a media frenzy, two weeks ago while looking through his files. Kalinski took the pictures of "The King" at Madison Square Garden in 1972, but then filed them away after selecting the one he liked best, a jumpsuited Elvis holding his cape out to his sides, which now hangs three-stories tall in Times Square. He said he had not been in the files since he took the pictures. He forgot how many he had taken. "I had a good shot," he said Friday. "There was no reason to look further into the files." In the Garden The unearthing started when a billboard company asked Kalinski, the official Madison Square Garden photographer since 1966, if he would like to take part in a campaign called "Great Moments in New York." The spread started with Kalinski's shots of legendary athletes Joe Frazier, Wilt Chamberlin, Willis Reed and Walt "Clyde" Frazier on 34th Street, and then the company wanted his pictures of Jimi Hendrix, Frank Sinatra and Elvis for Broadway. Before Elvis could be displayed, Kalinski had to ask Elvis Presley Enterprises, part of the singer's Graceland estate in Memphis, Tenn., if the image could be reproduced. After giving the OK, the estate, interested in making a calendar of the performance, asked Kalinski if he had any more photos. "I told them maybe I have like eight to 10, which isn't enough to do a calendar, but then I looked in my files to see how many I had and I had 40 really good ones and about 75 all together," the 64-year-old Kalinski said. Since then, Kalinski has done interviews on all the major networks, Elvis fan sites are buzzing with the news and he has received e-mails from all over the world. "I got an e-mail from someone saying, 'I was sitting on Broadway eating a hot dog, and I was so mesmerized by the billboard of Elvis, I must have sat there for more than an hour,'" he said. On display The lost pictures are on their way to Graceland where they will be displayed, starting Memorial Day, with an exhibit that features over 50 of Elvis' stage costumes, according to Kevin Kern, a spokesman for the estate. "This is a rare find, one of the most significant photo discoveries in several years," he said Friday. "... These images are from one of Elvis's most iconic performances at Madison Square Garden. He is wearing one of his signature jumpsuits named the Apollo. This is Elvis at his best." Kern said Elvis sold out the four June concerts, the last of which was an unscheduled Sunday matinee. Kalinski said he remembers meeting Elvis in his dressing room before the show. "The first thing that hit me is he had a charisma that glowed off him," he said. "I went over, shook hands with him, and he said, he was very humble, he said, 'This is Madison Square Garden, and I've got to do my best. It's quite an honor for me to be at Madison Square Garden.' "It doesn't matter if you're as significant as the Pope, Muhammad Ali, Elvis, anyone who comes to the Garden knows they've made it to the world's biggest stage," Kalinski said. "It doesn't matter how big they are, they know they have to be at their best." Kalinski said Elvis had what he has dubbed triple-X charisma, a charisma so powerful only a few people he has photographed qualify, including Muhammad Ali and Sinatra. "You go in and see Elvis and there's an aura that transcends," he said. "There's an electricity, but he still is humble. He's The King of Rock n' Roll, probably The King of Entertainment, and the king is humble." He said he felt very fortunate and was honored to be able to photograph Elvis. Although it was hard to take a bad picture of Elvis, he said he did what he has always done. "There's always going to be one moment that's better than another moment," Kalinski said. "That's how I attack every photo, looking for that moment. I don't know what it is, but I know it when I see it, and I have to act quickly to capture it." Kalinski said that without a doubt the image of Elvis, arms out-stretched holding the cape, was one of those moments. Source : http://www.benningtonbanner.com/localnews/ci_8900644

May 23, 200817 yr Photo Exhibition It was one of the world's biggest stages with sold-out audiences that included John Lennon, George Harrison, Bob Dylan and David Bowie. They were there to see a nervous Elvis Presley. Harrison came backstage in blue jeans and a denim shirt to wish him well. In his dressing room, Elvis "paced like a tiger," says "Memphis Mafia" member Jerry Schilling. The June 1972 concert at Madison Square Garden was Elvis' first at a New York arena. All but one official photo of the event was lost for 36 years before they were found for a "Great Moments in New York" billboard campaign. Twenty of the "Lost Photos" of Elvis in a white jumpsuit and cape now are mounted in an exhibition opening Friday at the Sincerely Elvis Museum in Graceland Plaza. "The only other time I ever had a similar feeling was when I photographed the pope," says George Kalinsky, official photographer for Madison Square Garden. Kalinsky, who will be in Memphis for the opening, visited Elvis' dressing room. He was too nervous to shoot anything before Elvis went onstage. "I wanted to take pictures, but I certainly wasn't going to ask him. I didn't want to do anything that was going to upset anybody." Elvis already seemed "visibly concerned." It was a concern Schilling describes as "a good positive nervousness, the kind that keeps people on their toes." Elvis, who always paced before going onstage, arrived as late as possible. "He never liked to get to a show more than 10 minutes before show time." For him, the Garden would become routine. The arena had to add a concert, turning Elvis' appearance into a history-making four sold-out concerts. For Kalinsky, it confirmed that Elvis was the most charismatic performer to hit the stage. The Garden's official photographer for 40 years, he has shot everyone from Janis Joplin to Pope John Paul II. The billboard campaign put Elvis on a 36-by-76-foot Times Square billboard towering above iconic Kalinsky photos of Frank Sinatra and Jimi Hendrix. Kalinsky said the 1972 photo "has to be right up there in terms of the great shots" he has made. In those 40 years, Kalinsky says only Elvis, Sinatra and Tony Bennett could make the fans cry. "But I think it's Elvis who still has more fans than any other performer, dead or alive."
