May 10, 200817 yr I mean why go to Zimbabwe..? Couldn't they build up a business here...? Nah, cheaper to exploit black African workers, profit off their labour, and pay them a sh!t wage I suppose innit....? is overthrown, but I dont really have a lot of sympathy for Colonialists when alls said and done, sorry mate.... hardly, Scott - it was the 1980s.... Britain was in the grips of recession (the guy's from Wales - he was an ex-miner). Plus, whether it's palatable for us or not, the simple fact is.... if these farmers didn't provide work for the natives - there would be no work for them. And each and every one of his workers were well paid, well treated and had a great amount of respect for him and what he had done with his business. And the land issue - I think ITV's Headcases summed it up perfectly.... Mugabe in a barren plot of land berating white farmers for "growing things we can't eat"..... "Why are they plantin' seeds? Who wants to eat seeds? No...I plant things I want to eat".... cut away to Mugabe scattering packets of crisps over the land to 'grow'.
May 10, 200817 yr So, to oppose imperialistic minority white rule (which had to go, it was as indefensible and amoral in Zimbabwe as it was in South Africa...) and criticise The Tory Govt's own Govt's culpability in the sh!t that ultimately occurred in Zimbabwe is somehow me "supporting" Mugabe is it...? It wouldn't have mattered if it had been a Mugabe or Ghandi who got rid of white rule, the Tories would still have mucked the Zimbabwean people about over land reform, let's face it.... You're not half a prat sometimes Rich.... Well, if you'd checked your facts you'd know that the UK Conservative party were rightly as history has now turned out correct to put the brakes on planned Land reform in 1982 because they were fully aware of Mugabe's Marxist beliefs & instability that he was already starting to bring; & would and has subsequently brought to Zimbabwe via his genocide of a once economically powerful African nation. So I'll give credit where credit is due, that is one thing that Thatcher (whether by luck or by judgement) got right. Because look at Zimbabwe right now and it is pretty obvious from the fact and figures that I provided, that the average Zimbabwean was better off in 1979 than in 2007. Where as in 1979 Zimbabwean's had a Government that was unacceptable to the majority of Zimbabwean's; whilst in 2007 Zimbabwe has a Government that is unacceptable to the majority of Zimbabwean's, but the big difference is they are now economically a lot worse off; the sociological infrastructure has collapsed; whilst they are intimidated & oppressed and in extreme cases murdered by a tyrannous minority Government. So how exactly is the average Zimbabwean better off now than in 2007, eh Scott? See Scott, that is one thing were I have a greatly different viewpoint on, that it is all well & fine having socialist principles & ideologies. But I like to believe that I live in the real world, where maintaining economics & democracy implemented properly are vital to a nation, something which Mugabe has proven to show ignorance & blatant contempt to those two very essential things. Still if Morgan Tsvangirai is assassinated (Bhutto style) within the next few weeks before the run off election will that by Thatcher's Conservative Government's fault as well? Scott, you are clearly an intelligent person, but sometimes I do wonder where your common sense is.
