Croatian football is in shock after 24-year-old NK Zadar forward Hrvoje Ćustić died from a head injury sustained during his side's league game against HNK Cibalia on 29 March.

'It's awful'

Ćustić was declared dead today, having never regained consciousness following the blow to his head. The player fell awkwardly after a challenge during the Cibalia match and, as his momentum carried him off the field of play, his head struck a concrete wall beyond the touchline. He was taken to hospital but, despite intensive treatment, his condition began to deteriorate yesterday. "It's awful," said Zadar captain Jakov Surać. "We are all crushed. I have lost a friend and team-mate." All of this weekend's Prva Liga fixtures have been postponed as the nation's football community comes to terms with the tragedy.

Tragedy for my hometown and my country

I just hope no more tragedies like this will happen before people who decide how the sport facilities should look like and how they should be equipped finally come to their sences.

I saw pictures and an article at ezadar.com and barely could hold my tears :(

I'm really wondering what will happen now, Zadar should get new stadium, actually we should have got it years ago, but no....till something like this happens everything is good

We wont get a new stadium for years... They are planing to built it on Višnjik, near new basketball gym, but it wont happen soon. They are building basketball field for 10 years and its still not finished.

But that our reallity, something bad has to happen and than they start to think what to do... Its a bit too late now...

Sure hope so... But, this is Brdoviti Balkan, nothing changes here...

Yesterday was a funeral  Very big number of Croatian football players were there as well as the leader of our representation Slaven Bilić, Igor Štimac who is a chairman of First national football league and many many other people from sport and cultural life from Zadar.

At the commemoration the day earlier the letter of Uefa president was read. It was really painful watching it all.

Dear Hrvoje hope you've found your peace

RIP

there is nothing else to say...

Igor Stimac? Former Derby player. Boooo!

It's really quite horrifying to think, really. RIP. :( I'd like to see a picture of the ground though to see where these concrete walls are. I noticed they have them at Forest yesterday, but they're a few feet behind the advertising hoardings (which inturn are about the same away from the pitch) and are just infront of the front row of seats.
