If I use beer for the batter, I use a lager, like Harp.....always wanted to try maybe Smithwick's or Bass.....
I think it's a right tasty ale myself.....it's imported here to the US, and served at a British pub I go to from time to time in my area of Florida

i dont like it all to drink although its nice in some batters especially onion rings,,im a cider drinker myself
They recently changed brands of cider they serve at this pub I go to on occasion....I forget what they have on now....they used to have Strongbow and Woodchuck on, at one time....
That's what they seve, Mangers....aka Bulmers....you jarred me memory for the name....
To be honest, I've never had cider on tap.....I'm more a beer and whiskey/whisky drinker....with the occasional foray into other types of liquor....
Well, I know this pub I go to has Mangers on tap....dunno what they have in bottles or cans there....they used to have Strongbow in bottles, as well as on tap, and, they had Woodchuck on yap, too
Well, there are British tourists who have been known to frequent the place, in the 20 or so years I've bwwn making the odd appearance there....so, I'm thinking they may request things from time to time, as well as the pub switching out the stuff that just doesn't move for beer/cider....
I'm thinking, outside the British pubs here in the US, Mangers isn't that popular....since I don't recall seeing it, anyways....maybe I need to look a little harder....
