The number of drug abusers and alcoholics claiming incapacity benefit has doubled in the last ten years.

More than 100,000 addicts are now claiming the benefit, which can be worth £87.50 a week, and they now account for almost one in every 25 claimants.

Is Britain a nation of addicts? How can we encourage addicts to accept treatment?

Why do you think the numbers of addicts claiming incapacity benefit has risen so sharply?

Should we be more worried about the cost of treating hidden addictions, such as the abuse of alcohol by the middle-classes? And with people reporting addictions to gambling, fast food, shopping and computer games, are we addicted to the sensation of being addicted?
