Posted April 13, 200817 yr another very popular group with a devoted mass of fans, but what were they? rock for pop lovers? although they were heavily rock orientated they never really mixed in true rock circles. its as if they had their own genre, many queen fans i knew didnt like 'real' rock, but had quite sober tastes. when i went to rock night clubs (which wasnt that often) very seldom was queen played amongst the sounds of zep, sabbath, purple, etc etc etc etc... i didnt rate them personally, but i cant deny their popularity nor can i deny freddie mercurys ability as a showman. queen tracks to me were like a black hole.... they were there but they fail to involk a response either way, i didnt love them, i didnt hate them. the only 2 queen tracks i liked were 'dont stop me now' and 'show must go on'. oh and briam mays hair was :puke2: and worse still...it still IS!
April 13, 200817 yr I loved Queen up until The Works which was dire not that Hot Space was much better. So in fact Queen in the 70s were ace while they were awful in the 80s. They were a brilliant pomp rock band at their height. Top tracks Keep Yourself Alive (from Queen) March of the Black Queen (Queen II) Now I'm Here (Sheer Heart Attack) Death on Two Legs (A Night at the Opera) Tie your Mother Down (A Day at the Races) Get Down Make Love (News of the World) Don't Stop Me Now (Jazz) Another One Bites the Dust (The Game) Flash's Theme (Flash) Best of the later tracks for me were: Hammer to Fall One Vision (Later covered brilliantly by Laibach) Under Pressure
April 13, 200817 yr I’ve been a fan of Queen for a long time. They certainly were a brilliant pomp rock band and fantastic live with the ultimate showman in Freddie. That said, all four members contributed to the song writing and they did change track a bit in the 80s to keep up with the music scene as it was then. Personally, my least favourite album was probably Jazz although it did contain one of my fave Queen tracks, Don’t Stop Me Now. Can’t agree with greebo69 about the 80s (guess it’s down to personal taste) as, apart from the odd track or two, I liked their output then, particularly A Kind Of Magic and The Miracle albums and I’m not just thinking of the singles released from those albums either. Although I’m not a particular fan of the title track, the last studio album released in Freddie’s lifetime, Innuendo, is a great testament to Queen’s talent and even though Freddie was terribly ill during it’s recording, his voice was still amazing. I do find, where Queen are concerned, there’s a lot of snobbery from their critics, but their sheer professionalism was especially apparent at their Live Aid set and that, itself, not only revived their career but their faith in themselves as a band. Their popularity is reflected in their sales as, although I’m not sure of the figures now, in 2005 Queen were the most successful music act in UK album chart history, according to Guinness World Records. One thing I will say is I hate it when they use Queen songs in TV adverts. I loved I Want It All until I’d heard it about a million times advertising sofas for goodness sake
April 13, 200817 yr I have always liked Queen from the first albums, lost their way in 82/83 but I think they recovered their musical genius, and Freddie was always going to go out with a performance right to the end. I'm sure if he could have gone while performing on stage he would have loved that. Some of their songs will last forever, love them or hate them. We are the Champions, will be played after every sporting final Another one bites the dust, We will rock you, Don't stop me now, Radio ga ga, Show must go on. Classics.
April 14, 200817 yr I like Queen too, but it is silly for them to be rated as 'The most successful music act in UK album chart history', due to Weeks On Chart. They had 9 No.1 Albums, & spent 21 Weeks at No.1, between the 9. Plus about 205 to 210 Weeks in the Album Chart Top 10. The Beatles had 15 UK No.1 Albums, 174 Weeks at No.1, & well over 400 Weeks in the Album Chart Top 10. It is perfectly obvious that the Beatles have achieved far more in the UK Album Chart than Queen. Queen have simply spent longer in the UK Album Chart over all - but, they have never had less than a Top 50 to Chart in - The Beatles had a far smaller Album Chart to rack up 'Weeks On Chart' in, for most of the 1960's..... By the way - ABBA have spent far less time in the UK Album Chart than Queen, but they too have spent longer at No.1 - 55 Weeks - even though both they & Queen had 9 No.1 Albums each - and ABBA's 215 Top 10 Album Weeks beats Queen too.... So, you really cannot tell over all UK Album Chart success by how long an Act spent in the ENTIRE Album Chart - not when other Acts spent longer at No.1, & longer in the Top 10.....
April 14, 200817 yr vote for a Queen forum here http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=65995 :D

April 14, 200817 yr Everyone loves Queen. My mum + dad are MASSIVE fans, they've seen them in concert and went to the Freddie Mercury tribute one, (with Annie Lennox, Guns N Roses, Mettalica, U2, etc.). Everyone loves a bit of Queen, it's almost a guilty pleasure, and there's no denying the fact how legendary Merucry was. Bicycle and Another One Bites The Dust are my favourites from them. Oh and as for 'Bohemian Rhapsody', am I the only guy who can't listen the song without laughing?
April 15, 200817 yr I did go and see them at Wembley in 1986 and they were outstanding. A brilliant show as they were one of the best live bands around as proved by the Live recordings of the band and that show at Live Aid.
April 15, 200817 yr I feel all the love here for Queen.... I feel it's almost my duty to add a bit of hateful bile......  For my ears, Queen just took what the likes of Zep, Sab and Hendrix were doing and just turned it into this frankly awful, pompous garbage.... I absolutely DETEST "Bohemian Rhapsody" with every fibre of my being, such an awful, awful song... Like somebody ingesting the classic Rock of Zep, Purple, Sab, Floyd and Jimi and then just sh!tting it out their rear end.... UGHHHHH!!!!!   I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the main motivating factor in Johnny Rotten forming the Sex Pistols was his abject hatred for Queen (not just the Queen  )... If that's true, then I guess they did serve a function of sorts..... :P

April 15, 200817 yr Queen are the most overrated act in musical history ever. Show me a Queen fan, and I'll show you someone who has not listened to (or does not like) Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath (the Ozzy years), early Deep Purple or early Pink Floyd. Or as New Musical Express correctly described them in 1975 "The Panto Led Zeppelin". Plus their legacy is to whore their back catalogue at every opportunity with that ghastly West End Musical, collaborating with 5ive, Wyclef Jean, various TV adverts (especially that astonishingly awful Pepsi advert with P!nk, Beyonce, Britney Spears & Enrique Iglesias) Z4JSYS7pda8 However, they've had that Robbie Williams like knack of knocking out great tunes on virtually every one of their albums, and were brilliant live. The bast*rds.

April 15, 200817 yr We are the Champions, will be played after every sporting final Another one bites the dust, We will rock you, Don't stop me now, Radio ga ga, Show must go on. Classics. I agree on that....We are the champions and we will rock you were the first queen songs I heard in my life...I like them in the 70's :D :D....And well WRTCH are almost always played at the end of the world cup when we know who's the "champion" lol!

And NME in 1975 wouldn't have known their arse from their elbow as they had Bohemian Rhapsody at #4 in their singles of 1975! Edited April 16, 200817 yr by grebo69
April 17, 200817 yr I like Queen, I wouldn't say they're one of my top fave bands but I can listen to most of their songs without thinking 'god turn this off' I'm goin to see Queen and Paul Rogers in Oct too, should be fun.
April 17, 200817 yr I've always had a dislike for Queen. There are a couple of songs I don't mind but I tend to find them overrated drivel... And because I'm not old enough, there's something I kind of want to know? In their heyday did many acts copy them? Or atleast acts you could tell were influenced by them? Only people say you can tell who the best acts are as they're the ones who's sound influenece so many generations and everyone wants to be them.... But I've never really heard anyone be compared to Queen. Infact Scissor Sisters are about the only act I can think of, and that's purely do with their flamboyancy, nothing to do with their music.
April 18, 200817 yr Author The Darkness thought they were copying queen  ..... says it all really good point rfc... no they were popular but they werent very infuencial when you consider their popularity and longevity. many minor groups have proved far more influenctial... xtc for eg... queen seemed to be the finished product, theres nothing you can take and create with from their material. tbh id rate queen as the biggest act to be of least influence ever.
