Not lazy at all. Restore is often a good place to start
How do you get a restore wizard ? I'm baffled again.

I've got windows XP.

It's part of the Help and support section.

I click on Performance and maintenance. It brings up a menu. I choose Using system restore to undo changes. Sometimes I also use this same menu to select "free up disk space" if my computer seem to be running slower than usual..

I then choose "Run the system restore wizard"; then I select "restore my computer to an earlier time and then select one of the bold dates from the calendar.

After that it's just a case of clicking next a couple of times and it does its stuff, shuts down and restarts.

Thanks BT. I have windows XP.

I have copied out your post and put it at the side of my computer for future use.

the restore terrifies me - I always think I will restore to before programs were installed or something - I dont think I have ever used it
My computer would just have a fit. I've found that most things wont work unless I delete some files - and I don't want to.

Yes, it has that potential. I've had to reinstall things before.

I don't want to buy an hard drive as the seperate ones seem to just stop working without warning. I don't want to lose what I have either. Another pc networked to this may work but I've not won the lottery yet.
I have my documents copied on several computers as well as USB sticks and all our PCs are networked.
How true that is. I've been hanging off because of it but They've remained elusive. Maybe I should look around for the cheapest I can get.
Hope you're having a good dinner. I'm watching tennis.
