I got home this morning at 6am having spent the night at the hospital with my father-in-law. Dave and I went out for lunch as we had our lady from the crossroads charity sitting with Dave's Dad. I left him eating his lumnch, had just taken him to the toilet and she said he was fine until about 30mins before we came back. He wasd doing his toilet every 10mins routine which she'd never had before. On top of that, he wouldn't stop straining and she couldn't get him to listen to her.

I gave him his supper and he ate it, but he was far too unstable to allow to use tha toilet. 10pm, I gave him is tablets and walked him to his room. He was very unsteady so it wasn'r easy. I started undressing him and then needed him to sit down but, he couldn't move his legs. I called Dave in and it took the two of us to get him undressed. There was blood on the incontinence pad, he suddenly became unable to form words and seemed unable to move. I phoned the local night time doctor cover. They said they'd phone back quiickly. An hour and a half they did - and then told me they thought it was an emergency so call an ambulance.

It seems that it's an urine infection that we could have been prescribed antibiotics for. Unfortunately, since it was the hospital and not the doctor, they are keeping him in. He's scared, really unhappy an d disorientated. Plus, we can't go back until 2pm. It the doctor had just come, we'd have not had to have him pulled around all night which as left him feeling dreadful. They also are keeping him for a few days which, again, is so against how he is. I can't see the point of having a call out night service if they wont come but take an hour and a half to tell you t6o call out an ambulance.

Meg, I've replied to this in the ' What should you be doing thread'. Have you explained to the doctor in charge that

your father-in-law would be far more settled at home, and that you will accept full responsibility for him? If they feel it is necessary for him to stay in, all you can do is to spend as much time as possible wiith him.Keep your chin up, and I

hope he will soon be back home with you.

You can't get to the doctors. I've left a message for them and they will let me know what they think tomorrow.

Phew! You must be shattered after all the worry and waiting in the hospital all nicht.

Sorry you've had all this trouble when it could have been sorted more easily by a visit. The problem is doctors giving blanket treatment without taking the individual's specific needs into account.

So sorry to hear of your situation re your father in law. Hope it is resolved. I dont know much about medical matters although I have spent long periods with my daughter in hospital. My next door neighbour had a similar experience which has been resolved with antibiotics and he is 94. and he is here there and everywhere, just returned from the south of france. He loves the sun and is depressed if there isnt any. Hope you get it sorted.
Gosh! Long may your neighbour stay so active. My mother in law often used to get urine infections and they could make her quite confused and delirious.
My neighbour died yesterday, while I was at the hospital with my father-n-law. The family came to get me but, I wasn't there. She is at peace and it's good it's over. I'll miss her. Her kids and mine grew up together.
Oh dear, Meg, it all seems to be happening at once for you. I'm sorry to hear about your neighbour, it is sad to lose someone with whom you share so many memories. I hope your Father-in-law is much better today and can come home.

Some good news! The eldest of our four grandchildren has just had her GCSE results.

3A*s and 9As !!! She is over the moon and we are so proud of her.

That is brilliant Bramley. Presumably they will be going to uni. Poor meg does seem
