Leona Lewis Makes Big Splash Atop Billboard 200

April 16, 2008, 9:00 AM ET

British import Leona Lewis' "Spirit" bows atop The Billboard 200 this week, making her the first U.K. solo artist to start at No. 1 with their debut effort. The Syco/J album moved 205,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan, with sales fueled by her No. 1 Hot 100 single "Bleeding Love." The singer was discovered on Simon Cowell's "The X Factor" in Britain.

Lewis becomes the first Brit solo act to lead The Billboard 200 since Rod Stewart's "Still the Same... Great Rock Classics of Our Time" in the Oct. 28, 2006 issue. Moreover, she becomes the first British female soloist to do so since Sade's "Promise" reached No. 1 in February 1986, a couple of months before Lewis' first birthday.

The release of "Spirit" stirs an 11% rise for "Bleeding Love," which returns to No. 1 on Hot Digital Songs with 223,000 sold for the week (2-1). The song has sold 1.1 million copies since U.S. downloads became available in late December, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Sade is not A solo act.. it's a band!!!!!

Didn't James Blunt score a #1 album?

I thinks so but I am not sure? What about Amy Winehouse?

anyway Congrats Leona ;)

Neither Amy nor James got #1 albums :P

It's a tad disappointing considering Spirit's first week sales over here. Hopefully it'll stick around for ages :D

Considering that in the UK Leona had the huge reality tv fame behind her and a huge no 1 hit and in America she is still barely known (her song still climbing airplay-wise) I'd say these sales are quite decent. Only established acts and acts with some special promo (reality shows and so on) usually have these kinda sales with their debut album. And nowadays since the 1m+ weekly sales for an album are pretty much history it really is about longivety. If she can pull one or two more hits from the album in the US she will sell extremely well, even thou just Bleeding Love's success will able the album sell 1m.

For a UK debut act in the USA it's phenominal sales!. Huge achievment.

lookk at the top 10 sales... ridiculous...

24.000 for number 10....

so yes Leona's sales are a HUGE ACHIEVEMENT

Leona's sales are actually very impressive. Just a couple of short months ago she was a nobody in the US, and now she has a #1 album, selling over 200,000, and a #1 single.

The best thing about this is... She still has a performance on American Idol this week to come! (I mean Next week) lol
Hopefully her performance on AI will be just as good as the X Factor performance which launched 'Bleeding Love' to the success it got here.
