May 3, 200817 yr however think its to do with that anti-mainstream indie mentality again - but then again i remember reading a comment on the clash that was made by another of first wave punk bands on going on totp and it was 'well obv we wanna go on totp because we want people to hear our message' It was a totally different time though mate.. Different social and political climates... The Punk bands that were doing TOTP did it on their own terms.. Same with Joy Division on their legendary TV appearance on Tony Wilson's show.... It also has to be stressed that Tony Wilson was a completely different sort of record label boss as well, same with Alan McGee and the blokes who run Rough Trade and Mute, hell, even Richard Branson who had the guts to take on The Sex Pistols when they rather acrimoniously left EMI.... Personalities like this dont really exist in the mainstream record industry anymore.....

Personalities like this dont really exist in the mainstream record industry anymore..... and i guess people like Clive Calder, Richard Branson, Chris Blackwell, David Geffen (yes i watched the Laurel Canyon show yet again last night  ) Chris Wright and Mr Ellis (was Ellis first name Nigel?? - N-Sign?) are in a strange position as they are in a lot of ways 'independent' or started off independent but a lot of them being pre-indie coming up in boho singer-songwriter, pub-rock, prog and Hippy-ville times (Eagles, Genesis, Jethro Tull, Hatfield and the North etc etc) - but some of these acts obv becomong mega-selling later on in the 1970s and those record labels ending up being sold to major label groups like Time Warner (AOL, New Line Cinema) - and punk becoming like a reaction to that. and another thing to think about is like the Beggars* group. as beggars a true indie even tho its records are going thru independent distributors like Belgium's Play It Again Sam or (the former Zomba owned) Pinnacle - or are they more like the major-minors like Virgin in the Punk era? and notice how beggars is closing doen the beggars imprint transfering it acts on to the 4AD label (still using 'branding' - design influences on their product thats in kepting with the Vaughan Oliver - 23 Envelope - Ivo Watts-Russell days) or to Rough Trade which it bought off Sanctuary. and also i think its important to remember that people like Geoff Travis also ran Blanco y Negro for Warner Music - and i guess there were other influencial bosses of this indie record type also doing this type of thing within major label environmants. and obv daniel miller's mute is an EMI records lable now. *and if you read the Mojo indiepop issue you may have also noticed that Beggars also went thru WEA (look at Gary Numan's feature) - so major??
May 3, 200817 yr I take it you're talking about "American Idiot" there.... TBH, I really dont know how you can consider that a "sell out" album... I never, ever took GD seriously until I heard that album tbh... I think most of the material on "American Idiot" is vastly more sophisticated and grown-up than "Dookie".... I really dont get how "Jesus of Suburbia" can be considered a 'sell-out', an 8-minute single with three different interlinked 'songs'...? Hardly the stuff of typical MTV/FM Rock 'heavy rotation'..... Okay, "When September Ends" kind of sucks..... Some of the songs on it are really good but it's way overated. By them selling out i mean the fact that as soon as that album came out they started selling anything they could with a Green Day logo (including undwear  ) and all of a sudden they wore mascarra and the same stupid suits every singly live performance and video. Maybe selling out isn't the right way to describe it but they were definetly more interested in catering to new fans than their old fans.

May 4, 200817 yr all of a sudden they wore mascarra and the same stupid suits every singly live performance and video. Maybe selling out isn't the right way to describe it but they were definetly more interested in catering to new fans than their old fans. Fair enough, I take the point there... That was a little lame it has to be said... All of a sudden they went a bit "Goff", I mean, band like Joy Division and Bauhaus did the whole "shirt 'n' tie" thing about 20-odd years ago... It was a pretty cynical attempt to reach out to the burgeoning "Emo" scene it has to be said.... I also take your point on the merchandising thing too.... The most bizarre bit of merchandising though has to be Cradle of Filth marketing a baby romper suit....  But, that was a wee bit understandable, Dani Filth had just become a dad..... And CoF have never pretended to be anything other than total whores.....

May 7, 200817 yr I nominate: Linkin Park. http://www.mtv.com/content/ontv/vma/2007/photo/flipbooks/performances/performances-linkin-park-14769130.jpg Linkin Park is a rock band from Agoura Hills, California. Since their formation in 1996, the band has sold more than fifty million albums and won two Grammy Awards. They achieved mainstream success with their debut album, Hybrid Theory, which was certified Diamond by the RIAA in 2005. Their following studio album, Meteora, continued the band's success, topping the Billboard 200’s album charts in 2003, and was followed by extensive touring and charity work around the world. Recognized for their adaptation of the nu metal genre into a radio-friendly yet densely-layered style in Hybrid Theory and Meteora, the band moved away from this and explored a variety of other genres in their latest studio album, Minutes to Midnight. The album topped the Billboard Charts and had the third best debut week of any album that year. They are also known for their several collaborations, most notably with rapper Jay-Z in their mash-up album Collision Course, and many other artists on Reanimation. Best Song: Points of Authority Best Single: Faint Best Album: Meteora Tracklisting: "Foreword" – 0:13 "Don't Stay" – 3:08 "Somewhere I Belong" – 3:34 "Lying from You" – 2:55 "Hit the Floor" – 2:44 "Easier to Run" – 3:24 "Faint" – 2:42 "Figure.09" – 3:18 "Breaking the Habit" – 3:16 "From the Inside" – 2:56 "Nobody's Listening" – 2:59 "Session" – 2:25 "Numb" – 3:08 Other Albums: Hybrid Theory Reanimation (remix album) Live In Texas (live album) Collision Course (Jay Z collaboration) Minutes To Midnight Band Members: Chester Bennington - vocals, back-up guitar (1999 – present) Rob Bourdon - drums, piano, percussion (1996 – present) Brad Delson - lead guitar (1996 – present) Dave Farrell a.k.a. May 7, 200817 yr If it's to late then sorry but.... http://www.tagate.com/guns_n_roses/guns_n_roses.jpg I nominate Guns N Roses. Arguebly one of the best Rock/Metal Rock Band signed out of L.A. during the 80's. Their unique bluesy hard rock edge blended with the amazigness of Slash helped created some of Rocks Best Songs (not my words, but words always used for 'Sweet Child O Mine' on all those voting things etc.). Axl may be the worlds biggest a-hole, the only original member of the group and pouring MILLIONS on a what, 15 year project that'll never see the light of day, one can only hope that the original lineup will return together. :P Best Single - Welcome To The Jungle [1987] A personal favourite. Best Album - Appetite For Destruction [1987] 1. Welcme To The Jungle 2. It's So Easy 3. Nightrain 4. Out Ta Get Me 5. Mr. Brownstone 6. Paradise City 7. My Michelle 8. Think About You 9. Sweet Child O Mine 10. You're Crazy 11. Anything Goes 12. Rocket Queen Illusions? Pft. GnR Lies - Meh. Appetite Of Destruction? YES YES. By far their debut hold some of their best mateial. Has now almost sold 30 million records worldwide, so it's a commercial sucess, but that still dosn't make it any less better. An awsome album by an awsome band (of their time).
May 7, 200817 yr I used to like them but It took them about 4 years to release their third album which is a load $h!t and it doesn't help much either that they did those awful songs with Jay-Z.
May 7, 200817 yr Author as not many people seem to be reading this list as of late i will be closing the nominations now as we have a nice round 40 entries
