Posted April 20, 200817 yr pm gordon brown is facing a revolt over his plan to abolish the 10p tax band, this will hit the poorest the most. so why do that? thats hardly an incentive to get benefit people back to work is it! why should they if they are better off on benefits?
April 20, 200817 yr You know a Labour government have lost it when the Tories are accusing them of not caring about the working-class... As bad as Blair was, atleast there was kind of a feeling of authority with him. With Brown, it kind of feels like the teacher has left the classroom and theyve brought in some substitute with no control. Id count myself as left-leaning, but in all honesty, I cant see what the difference between a Tory government and a Labour government would be at this point.
April 20, 200817 yr The problems of the 10% rate thing is all of Brown’s making, it was he that decided this in last years budget. In reality it only affects low earners under 25, with no children. But then, this is the section of the population he doesn’t give a damn about. He can easily get out of this by raising the personal allowance by £750 per year, and there will be no losers, however this will cost him billions in tax revenue that he can’t afford to lose. Looks like the vote in Parliament next week could be interesting if Labour backbenchers vote against it. There is also the vote on extending the time terror suspects can be held from 28 to 42 days, if he was to lose both votes, then he could be in crisis. This could be followed by a vote of no confidence.
April 20, 200817 yr Cant wait for Labour to lose the next election. Then we can get "OLD" Labour back. Personally like Frank Field as Opposition leader, i think he's great
April 21, 200817 yr Author brown is heading full steam ahead towards a 'john major' type figure of ridicule. im disappointed as id hoped brown would ressurect labour but it looks like my hopes were ill founded. im not sure though about labour losing the next election, im still not convinced the tories are anything other then hot air... theres no credible substance too them. i reckon milliband might get elected labour leader before the next election if brown carries on with this nosedive.
April 25, 200817 yr Brown really is embarrassing, it is like seeing the final days of Major and Callaghan
April 25, 200817 yr Tories have an 18 point poll lead over Labour now. Sounds good to me :D As a Tory I naturally want to see us back in power regardless of my misgivings about Cameron
April 25, 200817 yr Author Brown really is embarrassing, it is like seeing the final days of Major and Callaghan im begining to agree, hes failed to be the focused statesman i was expecting him to be, u turns at every point..
April 25, 200817 yr im begining to agree, hes failed to be the focused statesman i was expecting him to be, u turns at every point.. yeah i been a bit out of the loop in terms of UK news this last 2 weeks but what a farce this 10p thing is, Brown / Darling were screwing the very poorest sectors of society and traditional Labour voters am really shocked that they targetted the very people that their core support comes from, not even Maggie with her pandering to fat cats taxation wise went so blatantly out of the way to screw the very poorest people in society, someone on £11k a year would be £280 worse off with the 10p tax band scrapped I read :o Fair play to labour backbenchers and the opposition for making an issue of this matter, it was outrageous to scrap the 10p tax band
April 25, 200817 yr not even Maggie with her pandering to fat cats taxation wise went so blatantly out of the way to screw the very poorest people in society *coughpolltaxcough*
April 27, 200817 yr not even Maggie went so blatantly out of the way to screw the very poorest people in society typed with a tongue firmly planted in cheek, no?
May 3, 200817 yr typed with a tongue firmly planted in cheek, no?   Exactly what I thought... The Tories invented "Stealth Taxes" and the rises in VAT which hit the poorest hardest were all of her doing, as well as the Poll Tax.. Privatising Public Companies has also led to obscene rises in water/gas/electricity/phone bills, which also hits the poor... Deregulating Public Transport has led to similar increases in bus/rail fares, and we still have to bail the useless shower of b/astards that call themselves Network Rail out to the tune of £6 billion quid...... No, the Tories started this sh1t..... Nu Labor have just done nothing about it, which is just as bad though..... The scrapping of 10p rate of tax is beyond contempt as well... As Frank Field said "I didn't join the Labour Party to make the poor in society worse off...". Spot on mate... I'd vote for this bloke, he sounds like a real Labour man to me.....
May 15, 200817 yr Watching Brown & his puppet (Darling) made me realize that all of the 10p losers effectively remain losers. These people were to lose approx £120 p.a. to make them worse off than previously and for 80% of them this is no longer the case. However, because of the way it has been dealt with, all basic rate taxpayers will benefit by the same amount;ie. the rest of the taxpaying public, hence the 10p losers will still remain £120 behind everybody else. And the Labour MP's are happy with this  He even compared the total cost of £2.7billion (which he has borrowed, that means we will pay for it in other taxes) to the amount the Americans have given back to their taxpayers of £150 billion. Wow quite similar amounts, even allowing for the population differences. <_<

And the Labour MP's are happy with this  Yeah, it's just a basic fudging of the figures innit...? The poor will still remain poorer.... I think Darling and Broon are just pulling the wool over backbench Labour MPs' eyes..... And they got away with it...... <_< I would've LOVED it if the Budget had failed to pass the vote.... Really would've put the cat amongst the pigeons.. But the Backbenchers just bottled it.... I take back the nice things I said about Frank Field after his rather craven, grovelling apology to "Pa Broon" and (hello) Darling on BBC News.....
May 19, 200817 yr Tories have an 18 point poll lead over Labour now. Will they have it in 2 years time when it really matters? I really cannot see Brown calling a general election in 2009. He'll want to hold onto the 'metaphorical' keys for as long as possible after waiting for so long <_<
May 19, 200817 yr Will they have it in 2 years time when it really matters? Why the hell would you want the Tories in power...? Have you forgotten the 18 years in which they completely fukked up this country...? Why the hell does Politics in this country have to be about the same hoary, corrupt two old parties.....? Utter bollocks if you ask me... Time for a real change in this country surely, Labour and Tory have had enough chances to mess things up...
May 19, 200817 yr hmm that was an ironic cry  I am a Lib Dem person, or rather was, until they got all silly with the backstabbing. Plenty of time for my cross to stay yellow ;)
