April 23, 200817 yr Well, that certainly belies the wos critic's review on the same site. The audience seemed to love it. Interesting to hear what Ben Elton had to say. He's working on Phantom 2, isn't he? Stop that now, Baytree!
April 23, 200817 yr Some of the audience didn't - but that's what you always get with something different - and this is. The ones that didn't like it seemed few and far between - maybe they were the critics. But then, they never seemed to want to like it anyway.
April 26, 200817 yr There was definitely a lot of snobbery involved. The establishment didn't like a first time writer and composer getting a West End theatre they wanted their favourite transferred to. Now a wos poster is saying GV was so unhappy throughout he wanted to quit several times. He didn't look unhappy on any of the TCM footage, did he? The backlash against Darius before he'd sung a note of GWTW in public, was driven by similar snobbery and pent -up frustration at reality TV contaminating this previously pure medium. I think they forgot that TV personalities had starred in shows long before and that for the most part they were speaking out of ignorance of the man. Edited April 26, 200817 yr by Baytree
April 26, 200817 yr Whether they had or not, it shows that Trevor knew what he was doing casting Darius for this part. It takes a lot to judge the man and not the medias angle on the man. Darius has justified his choice in the way he performs.
April 27, 200817 yr His reviews have been remarkable. There must be a lot of casting directors eyeing them and possibly taking a look themselves. Tbh I was really nervous for Darius last Tuesday and very unsettled the whole day. I didn't expect the critics to be that positive but Darius rises to any challenge and his GWTW performance was obviously so good, they couldn't very well say much else. Goodness, even the ever critical Arlene Phillips admitted she cried. Tell me this, was Darius front of house, talking on his mobile 5 minutes before curtain up on press night? Someone claimed to have seen him. Surely he'd be in his half and backstage. Could he have seen Aria and mistaken him for Darius?
April 27, 200817 yr pip/spamfritter Is it possible to bring some of the GWTW videos over here and embed them? The Telegraph Arts copies of the TCM ones of the songs from the dress rehearsal have buttons for "get the link" and "get the code" so they can be added to a website
April 27, 200817 yr Tell me this, was Darius front of house, talking on his mobile 5 minutes before curtain up on press night? Someone claimed to have seen him. Surely he'd be in his half and backstage. Could he have seen Aria and mistaken him for Darius? Some other peop;le got confused. I heard 'There's Darius' a few times when it was Aria standing there.
April 27, 200817 yr That's what I thought. It's easy to confuse them at first sight. I just couldn't imagine any member of a cast being out front on a mobile 5 minutes before curtain up, even if his/her first entrance was from the audience.
April 27, 200817 yr He'd have had to be in full costume - he'd have stood out like a sore thumb in that taLL hat.
April 27, 200817 yr Author I iwll try to embed them, but my technical skill is zero - where shall they be embedded..? what site are they on with the link codes?
April 27, 200817 yr A new pinned thread maybe for the moment so people can access them easily. They're on this site http://www.telegraph.co.uk/portal/ttv/arts...ctid=1517401810 When you click on the thumbnail the video uploads and below the screen you'll see get the link get the code There are 3 songs with Darius - Just Two!, Alone, and the first version of the lullaby The other GWTW song is Join The Troop
April 27, 200817 yr Lotas of people don't like 'Join the troop' but I think that it, paired with the Women's Song are great. The misplaced enthusasm for war combined with the sorrow of the result of war. It's a good combination and, for me, gets the point across well.
April 27, 200817 yr The sound of Join The Troop reminded me for some reason of 7 Brides For 7 Brothers. I've no idea why. maybe because they're both male ensembles.
April 28, 200817 yr Author loved come join the war, if people dont get the point that the young men thought this was a game puffed up and ready for a fight, not understanding what war meant- its the stark contrast to the terrible reality..when masses are killed and the women sing an alotgether different mood of song! the code button doesnt do anything will post a link at the minute till can get it! April 28, 200817 yr I think that they bothe work so well because of the other one. I often find both pieces going around in my head.
April 28, 200817 yr It's a well constructed novel with many issues which aren't black and white. Every character other than maybe Melanie and (Belle) is flawed. They are open books, one through innocence and the other all knowing. I wonder why Margaret Martin didn't think Belle was important. Edited April 28, 200817 yr by Baytree
