Go with Wynter collaboration if you get Guetta please. 12 points automatically. :(

Mr BANG wouldn't let me have her, so it'd either be "One Love" or "Choose". :(

if Aaron is Beverley, Lewis=Agnes then Casey is Marit :heehee:

LOL I'm not Beverley, is it so unfathomable for the Queen of UK Soul Music to have such a dedicated fan?! -_-

each to their own, I stand by that statement about Stay The Night  I think that the new Beverley Knight single defines bland comeback, so I just had to laugh when I saw that it was No.1 in your chart :kink:

Ridiculous. Perhaps if I was 10 years old or if it was the late 90s again I might see where you're coming from, but I just can't. It's so utterly hideous, cheesy, camp (which is an understatement!) crap with a tacky key change to boot. I really don't know what was up for the voters last month, I thought we were better than that? I just can't wait for the inevitable third entry from Alcazar, based on previous successes in the contest. :puke2:

As for your opinion on Beverley's single, I can't say I'm at all surprised. I've noticed that soul music is one of your more grey areas in your broad taste in music. Why would you all of a sudden like someone you've never appreciated? She's gold, passing by the fools who just don't know. :kink:

Personally, I can't dismiss something so personal as bland. It may appear to be 'bland' on the surface, but those lyrics are lovely. She wrote it about someone she loved that died, though she knew it was coming. So it's all about holding on to every minute before you have to say goodbye. A bit cliché perhaps, but it comes from a very real place and I have to love her for that. Not that I find it at all bland anyway.

Anyway, I'd love more feedback on Chew Lips.

:o That has just made me appreciate the song even more, I wasn't so sure what it was about at first but that totally makes sense. I don't think 'Beautiful Night' is bland either ... if it was by someone like say Beyoncé I'm sure it'd be a hit. :P

Anyway back to your entry. I'd go with 'One Love' if you get David Guetta, my favourite on the album I think. Not fussed on the Chew Lips song, but I think others could like it? I dunno!

second place suggests that you are in a minority of Alcazar haters :P the key change makes the song as well, uplifiting excellent pop, although I don't think they have another song that would do well in this contest to be honest, so I'm not expecting any third entry

I like a number of Beverley Knight songs, Greatest Day in particular, but this one doesn't float my boat at all. Lyrics really only make an impact to me if the melody can manage to hold my attention at the same time, and Beautiful Night's melody is just so boring that it doesn't make me want to go back and listen to it again at all...plenty of songs that are personal can be bland at the same time, Kym Marsh's entire solo career springs to mind :heehee: In terms of the music vs. lyrics debate, I do sometimes feel that some artists sacrifice one over the other, if you're looking for a 'smash single' you generally don't want the lyrics to be too indepth so that people can remember them and sing along...on the other hand, songs that are too personal far too often focus entirely on the lyrical content and not at all on the music. Maybe it's shallow but I'm not a huge lyrics listener, it's all about the music for me, I'd read a book if I was looking for literary genius :kink: There are of course songs that manage to become hit singles whilst at the same time having thoughtful and meaningful lyrics, but these seem to be few and far between...not that I'm implying that Beverley's making music to have hit singles as I think that era has passed for her now, same with one of my favourite current acts, Sharon Corr, but just for me personally, I find Beautiful Night as bland as you find Stay The Night tacky and awful. Thank god for different tastes being evident in the BJSC then in that case otherwise we'd have winners that sound exactly the same every month :w00t:

back to your potential entries, I quite like Salt Air in a 'would be mid-table' sort of way in my votes, sounds like it could be a grower on first listen too...I gave Solo a point a few months back and if this grew enough, I could see it possibly getting a point or two from me...can't see it finishing any higher than 13th in the final, but I do reckon it would qualify comfortably

if you're going to go with Guetta, One Love is really the only song on the album that stood out to me (other than the singles) on first listen, and I haven't had a chance yet to listen through for a second time...and I'm sure with Estelle on vocals it's likely to be one of your favourites to :kink: it would certainly do much better than No Substitute Love, top ten in the final, possibly top five

Yeah, on the surface it seems like it's just about a beautiful night, but reading her description of the track makes it more special. I said the very same thing about Beyoncé when I first heard it.

Hmm, was hoping someone like you would like it. I'd hoped it had a different appeal to "Solo", but I guess not. Was hoping to send "One Love", but I expect TIP has reserved David so I can't send it.

Or it suggests that BJSC voters love any old schlager put in front of them. :( For a genre that tries to be so happy and uplifting, it just leaves me cold. Very hard for me to like.

I'm completely different, when you're listening to this sort of artist (Beverley Knight, Alicia Keys, India.Arie, Jazmine Sullivan etc.) I find that it's much more important to listen to their lyrics and the music is only secondary. It's their voices and soul that are the driving force behind the songs. I could listen to Beverley acapella or just with a piano (which is the case for a couple of her tracks) and still be blown away by the voice. It's not all about glitzy production and sounding like every other song of the moment. I don't find the melody boring, I found it extremely catchy and the chorus gets stuck in your head almost immediately, it's hard not to sing along to the "oh oh oh, oh oh oh" bits as well.

Perhaps it's hypocritical of me to say, but Kym Marsh would have been better off making throwaway Pop songs, rather than trying to be meaningful. She's certainly more Rachel Stevens than Beverley Knight.

Clearly Beverley isn't fussed with the charts, or she's incredibly naive. Releasing the single as a download only and on the same day as the album. :nocheer: Not that I think "Beautiful Night" is too wordy or not commercial, it could have been a decent hit with the right support.

Ergh, it seems like I really have lost my way with picking songs. I can't get a genuine non-cheap top 10 any more. :( (though I'm not sure I ever did, bar VI?)

I'd have loved to send "One Love", "Toyfriend" or "Choose" (in that order) but Guetta is taken now. :(

I agree with Aaron on Alcazar. Minorities ftw. Eventually we shall RISE.

fair point about the soul singers, I do love schlager obviously but some soul singers have an impact on me, I'm not fussed over production, it's all about melody to me...I guess people look for different things in music. I can't say I particularly enjoy listening to many acapella or just voice/piano songs, although I do love all of the 'Yanou candlelight mixes' of dance songs such as Heaven and Everytime We Touch, and Kelly Clarkson's live piano interpretation of Beautiful Disaster blows me away every time  My pet hate is songs that have been overproduced to the point that you can barely hear the vocals of the singer underneath it

I'm surprised by how much I love One Love, I don't reckon Choose would do well at all, Toyfriend has a lot of support it would seem, even though I'm not a massive fan

Haha, I think it's pretty much me and you against the rest of BJSC for that one.

Ah right, I guess the melody of "Beautiful Night" is quite...formula? repetitive? (not sure what I mean) so if you don't like it, I guess there's not much hope for it.

I enjoy songs with just a piano, but I don't listen to acapellas really. But if I was seeing someone like Beverley live, she could sing something in acapella amd it'd have the same effect, possibly more on me. But that's just how good she is, I can't imagine I'd be as impressed if someone with weaker vocals did it. Saying that, I quite like the bonus track on Little Boots' album and her vocals aren't that strong.

I'm surprised at how much other people like it too, considering how Estelle is generally disliked as a rule. :heehee: I suppose "Choose" isn't wildly catchy, but I do love it. "Toyfriend" isn't looking likely as Casey wants to send her, but I'd hope that can do well too. It slightly reminds me of Timbaland doing a more dance style of song

ah yes, the Little Boots bonus track is a perfect example of a great piano/vocal song  Beautiful Night reminds me of a lullaby or something, it's very soothing, it's not that I dislike it, it just completely washes over me

I don't think Estelle is disliked as such, American Boy was excellent, and both Free and 1980 were decent, but a lot of her material is so uninteresting to me...I do quite like her vocal style/tone, it's very different, I just wish she'd put it to use on better material. One Love is a step in the right direction, far better for me than her other dance guesting on that Faithless track a few years ago

I thought Beautiful Night was bland at first, but now I think it's sweet :P It's got a really cute chorus

Yeah, I think soothing and lullaby (not that it makes me go to sleep) is a good way to describe it. I actually like that about it, her soothing voice is part of what I like about her and I think it compliments her.

That's what I mean, she seems to be a very "she has on or two good songs" artist, but I think both of her albums are great. I do admit that her lyrics can be a bit...different to say the least, you can certainly tell it's almost fully written by her. But, like you said, she's got a very distinct tone and style about her and I love her confidence. I still think "Shine" is one of the most consistent albums I own.

I was actually considering the Faithless track before, but I'd much rather send "One Love".

Woo! Agreed about the chorus. I hope everyone buys it come September 7th. -_-

I actually have to say Beautiful Night is one of my favourite Bev songs! :o Gorgeous track, was quite shocked at how much it grew on me as well as I didn't see myself giving it points at the beginning of XIX...

Oh, and I can offer no useful opinion on your tracks atm Aaron, sorry :( LOL, I promise I'll try to be of more help for XXI

Mhm, it's a bit of a grower. Most of her tracks are gorgeous though, it's just BEV.

Boo at you Tyron! Boo at you. :( I'm probably gonna please you and send "Punching Out" if David Guetta doesn't free up. :nocheer: (not that he's any less cheap) I'm just not very inspired after getting bad results after making an effort to find Tegan & Sara and M$ney and failing with the old gem method.

You can probably help me next month, when I consider the same tracks. :cheer:

Sending the track I leaked to you probably wouldn't please me. How about sending some India.Arie? I hear she has a new flop out these days, and if that fails you could go with the old-time favourite I Am Not My Hair http://www.moopy.org.uk/forums/images/smilies/grin.gif

I was being sarcastic, but someone was passing around the link about a day later anyway...

India.Arie is such a no-go for the BJSC that it's unreal! She's far too R&B/Soul and not even vaguely Electro or Pop for this. You have reminded me that I must download her new (months old) album though.

This is mine. Just saying. (before someone - Aled - gets ideas and reserves her) Love it so much, wouldn't care if it DNQed (though I'd think you're all crap judges) the only thing I want to enter.

Whilst I do love me some 'Soul Survivor' someone seems to be epic failing as mod and forgetting the new rule..
I wanted to say that too :drama:
