Shakira backs Gordon

(Tuesday April 22, 2008 01:38 PM)

Shakira has spoken of her support for Gordon Brown, after the pair exchanged views on the subject of education across the world.

The Colombian pop star and British Prime Minister were amongst the international figures involved in a conference call on Monday.

Hosted by the Global Campaign For Education, the initiative seeks to meet a UN pledge of international benchmarks in schooling by 2015.

Shakira said of Brown: "I think he is a man with wonderful intentions and who is also very pro-active and who has been working very hard for this issue of education.

"I applaud his work and applaud the fact that he is brave enough to talk to celebrities like me", continued Shakira, who is a UNICEF goodwill ambassador.

"I think we are all on the same boat trying to get to the same shore, and trying to provide education for all children in the world", she continued.

Meanwhile, the embattled government chief returned Shakira's compliments and commended her work away from pop music.

"I think the most important thing that all those people who are household names would say is that their role is to galvanise public opinion throughout the world", he said.

Also, here's an English interview which explains more about Shakira and what se's been doing for education in the past few weeks and throughout her career:

There was a centrefold spread on this in the independant!!!!!! and they wrote about shakira as if she was a godess LOL The nicest article iv ever read about her in the uk.. it praised her intelligence, uniqueness and told you the story about how she got signed.. all of her albums and even told about her appearing in a soap opera before she got big lol

i have noticed the upmarket UK press seem to get shakira especially after they reviewed her in concert, they see she is not a one dimensional manufactured act and that there is more to her. the good thing about shakira is she has substance along with her beauty and talent, when shakira opens her mouth to speak she is intelligent and eloquent you see that in interviews
