Glastonbury Update, UK

It's just been announced that Will is to headline the Avalon stage at this year's Glastonbury event on Saturday 28th June. Time still to be confirmed.

Check the official Glastonbury site for all the up-to-the minute details on the event but we can confirm that also sharing the Avalon stage are the following acts: The Proclaimers, Alabama 3 unplugged, the Handsome Family, Rachel Unthank & The Winterset, Bacalao, Malarchy and One String Loose.

Thanks sunday.

Wonder what's brought about the change?

I've no doubt there will be the ones who can be relied upon to disagree with everything Will, but I really do think it's about time he was given headline position.

No tv coverage of the Avalon stage.

Email posted by Iscagill.

I emailed the Glastonbury festival office and asked if there were any plans for BBC or other tv coverage of Will's set.

This was the response

"I am afraid the BBC do not have live cameras at the Avalon Stage: We already cover six stages, four of them live (Pyramid, Other, Jazz World and John Peel) with cameras in Dance East and The Park as well.

It may be that the BBC capture some or all of Will Young'se set with a roving crew but I really cannot say whether this will happen or not - in fact this would be a decision made over the weekend and of course would need Will Young's agreement in all events. I am sorry I cannot tell you more

Trust the BBC to do most of the other stages but not the Avalon one.

I do hope Will does agree - that's if the BBC roving cameramen actually know where the Avalon stage is.

I'm not surprised chrysalis it's not a snub they just always cover the main stages.

Then it's about time they changed their format. :arrr: As if.

Will just sang 'Let It Go' on Radio 2 wow *goosebumps* absolutely stunning :w00t:

I've missed his voice so much

Don't know if I like the song yet, but the voice

Was that his brother Rupert with him? He has a new band did he say?

Love it - so good to hear him sing something new - a "delicate ballad" indeed. Bet it sounds a bit different on the album :P

So pleased he was on early - I can relax a bit now.

You forget just how beautiful his voice is. Wish I was in that tent tonight. :(

Will hasn't writing credits on this track has he?

With my various recorders I have managed to programme it all and hope that I get something.

The song is beautiful - lovely vocals.

Devoted is on fire! :yahoo:

Hi folks, I know it's been a while  Just been over to Dev and it sounds like he went down a storm. Avalon stage was packed as was the field outside.

Adored LIG earlier today - god I've missed his voice

Nice to see you back on here lainey, I think we're all busy over on Devoted tonight anyway, I don't want to miss anything.

Will Young

Avalon Stage

Saturday

When Will Young was reported to have been spotted among the Glastonbury throngs a few years back there was barely disguised indignation. Just what did the poster boy for manufactured pop think he was doing at this most non-mainstream of festivals?

Well now, after some six years of trying, Will is finally playing Glastonbury and he’s out to shift some opinions. Admittedly there are people clearly here just to take the p*** but essentially it is a home fixture, with young women and children predominant. The scream that greets him as he takes the stage can only be described by reference to the stoning scene in Monty Python’s Life of Brian when John Cleese says, “There aren’t any women here are there?”

So what does the original Pop Idol sound like these days? Well, a pleasing mix of sweet soul grooves and mellow funk as it turns out. It is the kind of easy-on-the-ear pop that has you trying to sing along even though you don’t know any of the words. All of this is provided by a backing band as tight as Will’s new trousers, which he shows off with bum wiggling pride.

‘Changes’ displays some vocal power and there is an outstanding cover of Stevie Wonder’s ‘Blame It On the Sun’ pointing towards more credible influences. Old stuff, new stuff, who can tell, and frankly who cares. The set is already running over thanks to a bit of onstage invasion by an admirer in a Borat man-kini by the time ‘Leave Right Now’ points us in the right direction. “I’m much happier now.” Will Young tells us. To my great surprise, so am I.

And another in NME: thanks to Mrs Soul (Wonders will never cease )

Pop Idol star also covers Joni Mitchell on the Avalon Stage

Will Young paid tribute to Kings Of Leon at Glastonbury today (June 28).

The Pop Idol singer said that last night's (June 27) Pyramid Stage headliners were "the only band I've left my Winnebago for this weekend" during his set on the Avalon Stage, which began at 6:30pm (BST).

"Weren't they just fantastic?" he added.

Playing a career-spanning set to a largely female crowd, Young rolled out the hits, including 'Leave Right Now' and 'Love Is A Matter Of Distance'. He also covered Joni Mitchell's 'Help Me'.

"It's taken me six-and-a-half years, but I've finally made it to Glastonbury," the singer said before performing 'Your Game'.

Before ending his set, Young got the crowd involved in the show, dragging a fan up on stage where he swapped hats with him.

I have had a look at the footage I recorded yesterday and found his brilliant interview with Edith and somebody I don't recognise. Who was he? He was a good interviewer. I though Will looked and sounded delightful and so happy.

It is a travesty that his set wasn't shown at all. I have emailed the BBC complaints to get it off my chest.
