With Wiley seemingly slowing down, Madonna’s 4 Mintues, a collaboration with Justin Timberlake and Timbaland, has equalled her 2005 comeback single Hung Up by spending a third week at the top of the UK chart. An impressive feat considering the single’s parent album Hard Candy has debuted at the top this week

1. Madonna feat. Justin Timberlake – 4 Minutes (1)

Still in pole position, the first single from Madonna’s Hard Candy, the UK’s new number one album, stays at No.1 for a third week. After a relatively slow start by Madonna’s usual standards owing to the fact that it was released straight after the first ever play of the single, it has moved 7-5-8-4-1-1-1 so far on its seven weeks in the top ten. Her 2005 comeback single Hung Up opened at No.1 and also spent three weeks in control. Should 4 Minutes make it a fourth week at No.1 next week, it will be her longest running chart topper since 1990’s Vogue. Madonna released 29 singles in the 1990s (including two re-issues), two of which reached the top spot in the UK, Vogue and Frozen. She has only released 14 singles so far in the 2000s but a rather more impressive five of them have topped the chart; American Pie, Music, Hung Up, Sorry and now 4 Minutes.

2. Sam Sparro - Black & Gold (2)

Taking his tally of weeks spent at No.2 to three, Sam Sparro is the first of three British based Australian acts in the top twenty this week (see number nine and number twenty for the others). Black & Gold currently appears three times on the iTunes chart in various single and album versions hence its increased momentum this week. Although Sam still can not overhaul Madonna to score a UK chart topper, this song looks as if it will become one of the biggest sellers of the year and has helped his debut self titled album to enter at No.5 this week.

3. Wiley - Wearing My Rolex (4)

Having looked almost certain to top the UK chart this week after a high download entry at No.4 seven days ago, Roll Deep member Wiley’s grime/dance crossover Wearing My Rolex has to settle for a one place climb to No.3. It is nevertheless the first solo top three single for the rapper, eclipsing his previous biggest hit single by 28 places. The single is likely to go either one or two places better this time next week as the physical formats of the single are due out on Monday.

4. Usher feat. Young Jeezy - Love In This Club (7)

Another song that had at one point been in contention to top the chart, Usher’s former US chart topper Love In This Club settles for a three place climb after its physical release. It is the first UK top five hit for Usher in over three years and bodes well for his upcoming new album due out later in the month. It is highly unlikely to be quite the dominating force that his 2004 million selling No.1 album Confessions was though as that album spawned two No.1 singles; Yeah! and Burn.

5. Estelle feat. Kanye West - American Boy (3)

Now on its seventh week inside the UK top five, Estelle has moved 1-1-1-1-2-3-5 so far. This is likely to be its last week in the top five which puts it in line with the last two chart toppers from Duffy and Basshunter who also both managed seven weeks inside the top five. Estelle’s next UK single is due out in June while this single is starting to make its presence felt worldwide. It is currently becoming huge across Europe and is climbing the US Hot 100 too which also currently features fellow UK female artists Leona Lewis, Duffy and Natasha Bedingfield. Natasha featured in the video for Estelle’s 2004 single Free while the pair also did a duet with each other on the US remix of Natasha’s album track Drop Me In The Middle.

6. September - Cry For You (5)

Swedish singer September’s second UK single Cry For You shows some impressive staying power, though arguably very few songs do not have staying power these days. Cry For You spends its fourth week in the top ten this week and slides just a place after two weeks at No.5. It is one of quite a few successful dance hits of a genre that seemed to have lost its way midway through the decade with a faceless sea of 80s covers and looped samples. It seems to be coming back to prominence now arguably thanks to a combination of more original songs and increased record label support, in particular from independent labels Hard2Beat and All Around The World.

7. Flo-Rida feat. T - Pain Low (6)

Now on its ninth week inside the UK’s top ten, Flo Rida and T-Pain’s former US No.1 single Low slides just a place to No.7 this week. Flo Rida’s next single Elevator features the ubiquitous Timbaland and is due out in a few weeks. When this song climbed to No.2 a few weeks ago I suggested that American hip hop had been faltering so far this year, but with three US hip hop songs in the top ten this week as well as influences of the genre on numbers one and five, it looks like the genre has now found its feet once again.

8. Will.I.Am feat. Cheryl Cole - Heartbreaker (8)

Released physically on Monday, Will.I.Am’s second solo single Heartbreaker charts for the last time this week as an album track. Next week the versions of the track featuring Girls Aloud’s Cheryl Cole will be available to buy digitally and physically which should ensure a climb into the top five for the single next week. The song may have been higher this week if not for a version of the track being deleted from iTunes midweek which meant that the song has been playing catch up for the last few days. The biggest solo success for a member of the Black Eyed Peas to date is Big Girls Don’t Cry which Fergie took to No.2 last summer which Will.I.Am will be looking to equal or better in seven days time.

9. Pendulum - Propane Nightmares (16)

Climbing seven places into the top ten as a result of its physical release, Australian drum and bass act Pendulum score their first ever UK top ten hit with their atmospheric new single Propane Nightmares. Pendulum are one of two Australian acts in the UK top ten this week. There are also four Americans, three Brits and a Swede. Pendulum’s new album In Silico is scheduled for release on May 12th and features this single as well as previous single Granite.

10. Scouting For Girls - Heartbeat (10)

Staying at No.10 for a second week, London based indie trio Scouting For Girls have something of a residency in the lower end of the top ten with their singles. None of their three top ten singles have ever gone higher than No.7 but between them they have amassed eleven weeks in the top ten in total. It seems that the band are more of an albums act though; their debut self titled album is one of the biggest sellers of 2008 so far and has sold almost half a million copies to date in the UK.

Other notable movers and shakers in the top 40:

15. The Script - We Cry (30)

Climbing into the top fifteen following its physical release is the debut single from Irish trio The Script. We Cry has been receiving increased airplay over the past few weeks and while usually I would expect a single to fall after its physical release, I would not be at all surprised if this incredibly radio friendly single, which is like a mix of Maroon 5 and Crazy Town, continues to climb in the coming weeks or at least sticks around for a while. It is a grower and a lot of people are probably not aware of the song’s existence for the time being.

19. Jay Sean - Maybe (42)

British-Asian singer Jay Sean scores his second UK hit of the year this week, leaping into the top forty for the first time with Maybe following its physical release. His last single Ride It peaked at No.11 earlier this year while his biggest hits came in 2004 when Eyes On You and Stolen both reached the top ten. It seems that the singer is the only ambassador of commercial Asian influenced music in the British mainstream at the moment. As this is the case, perhaps his success owes more to the R&B influences in his songs.

20. Gabriella Cilmi - Sweet About Me (27)

Continuing its slow climb, this time into the top twenty for the first time, young Australian soul singer Gabriella Cilmi’s Sweet About Me looks increasingly like being a big hit as every week passes. A pleasant and catchy song, it has been No.1 in her native Australia already but whether it can go any higher in the UK is another matter. The song’s increased promotion on the Sure deodorant advert seems to be aiding her debut album more than this single. Lessons To Be Learned has reached the top ten album chart for the first time this week.

22. Nelly & Fergie - Party People (26)

Climbing for the third week on the trot, the new single from US rapper Nelly, which features Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie, moves ever closer to the UK top twenty. An aggressive hip hop track, it’s a far cry from the softer side of Nelly that we had become used to on singles such as My Place, Dilemma and Over & Over. Considering all three of those were UK chart toppers, perhaps releasing this as the first single from his new album was not a wise idea. It could still go much higher but it does not look like it will have the legs to become a fourth UK number one single for the rapper.

24. The Hoosiers - Cops And Robbers (35)

Like a Scouting For Girls single, pop-indie trio The Hoosiers physically released Cops & Robbers, the fourth single from their former No.1 album The Trick To Life, last week where it jumped to No.35. It progresses into the top thirty for the first time this week with future climbs not out of the question following increasing airplay. It is as radio friendly and annoyingly catchy as their first two singles Worried About Ray and Goodbye Mr A so do not be surprised if its still lingering inside the top forty in three months from now.

26. Robyn - Who's That Girl (38)

Climbing courtesy of its full physical release, Who’s That Girl is Robyn’s fourth UK top forty hit in under a year. The album’s first single Konichiwa Bitches stalled outside the top 100 on release but managed to climb as high as No.98 around the time of With Every Heartbeat’s chart topping success late last summer. This is more than likely then to be the last release from the Swedish singer’s self titled current album, but for a fifth single in the current chart climate, a top thirty hit is not bad at all. The CD single features her collaboration with Snoop Dogg, Sexual Eruption, as well as a cover of Message In A Bottle originally by The Police.

29. Duffy - Warwick Avenue (62)

The third single to be taken from Duffy’s debut album, the ballad Warwick Avenue becomes her second top forty single after Rockferry peaked at No.45 and Mercy topped the UK chart. While perhaps not another future number one, Warwick Avenue is a 60s influenced soul ballad that will undoubtedly lift album sales as it shows a different side to the fun Duffy that was evident on Mercy. The album appears to be in a strong position to end the year as the biggest seller and at this moment in time, Rockferry looks like the only album to have been released so far in 2008 that will end up selling a million copies in the UK.

30. Ashlee Simpson - Outta My Head (Ay Ya Ya) (34)

The first single to be taken from Ashlee’s third album Bittersweet World, the younger Simpson sister has been over to promote this song in the UK this week with a couple of TV appearances. The song, which is produced by Timbaland, benefits from this promotion with a four place climb, but at this rate it does not look like it will reach the top ten like its early download momentum suggested. At the very least, it is now the fourth top thirty single for Ashlee following Pieces Of Me, LaLa and Boyfriend.

35. Panic At The Disco - Nine In The Afternoon (36)

Finally reversing its decline, the comeback single from US rock act Panic At The Disco debuted at its peak position of No.13 two months ago and has been slowly falling ever since. Back up a place, largely thanks to continued support from Radio 1 who have continued to play the song relentlessly, it is the highest charting hit single in the UK to date for the band. The second single from Panic’s second album Pretty.Odd. is That Green Gentleman (Things Have Changed) and is due out on June 9th.

36. Kelly Rowland feat. Travis McCoy – Daylight (NEW)

One third of the now disbanded (for the time being) R&B girl group Destiny’s Child, US singer Kelly Rowland has done well on her own and has before now had five UK top five hits; Dilemma, Stole, Can’t Nobody, Like This and Work, which was a big selling No.4 hit earlier in the year. Daylight is less dance influenced than its predecessor and is taken from the re-release of her current album Ms.Kelly. The song features vocals by Travis McCoy, lead singer of American group Gym Class Heroes, and should be a seventh top twenty hit single for Kelly this time next week. The seventh one, if anyone was wondering was 2003’s Train On A Track, the only one of her solo singles up until now not to reach the UK top five.

37. One Night Only - It's About Time (187)

The third single from the British indie band following You & Me and the top ten single Just For Tonight, It’s About Time climbs an astonishing 150 places this week following its physical release, showing that although the track is fairly unpopular with casual buyers, they seem to have already built up a loyal fanbase. Nevertheless, it is quite a comedown following the No.9 peak of its predecessor although it has given a boost to their debut album Started A Fire.

Next weeks chart

Madonna will be hoping for a month in control with 4 Minutes next week, and if it follows the pattern of other No.1’s in 2008, that does not look out of the question. Wiley’s Wearing My Rolex is likely to put up a fight as it comes out on physical formats on Monday, while Sam Sparro could still be in with a chance with Black & Gold which has three successful versions currently on iTunes. Will.I.Am’s single will have the Cheryl versions available next week which could help it into the top three. Other physical releases due on Monday which should make an impact on the top forty are due from Kelly Rowland, Kylie Minogue and Santogold while Shaggy, Yael Naim and James Fox could make some sort of impact on the top 75. Hadouken, Jack McManus, Scooter, Def Leppard and Delays will all hope for high album entries but it looks like a case of as you were next week with Hard Candy likely to reign supreme for week number two.
