i dont think they are talentless, just not highly talented. i dont think theres anything special about them, and maybe an opinion from someone neutral is more realistic then one of a 'fan'.

as for 'fans only' comments on this thread.... no. theres an official saturdays thread in the s club forum for those with blind faith, this is a public FORUM which was set up so people could voice opinions .

There's just one thing I'm curious about... how come you, Russ and Grimy are showing a lot more interest (or distaste) to The Saturdays in particular than just about any other artist in the Pop forum?

Simple.

They have been touted in the media & non Red Top papers like the Daily Mail, Telegraph & the Independent as the new Spice Girls/Sugababes/Girls Aloud who are set to dominate the charts and "save pop music". In the same way that Adele was hyped at the beginning of the year.

Therefore if your record company makes bold statements like that (especially as its been reported the Polydor UK have spent a significant amount of money: £400,000 to "break" the act), then the least we can expect is a great British pop debut single.

As I said before as debut singles go I dont think it is nowhere near the league of "Wannabe"; "Overload" or "Sound Of The Underground". Whilst to be honest I don't personally think it is as good as "Bring It All Back"; "5-6-7-8"; "C'est La Vie" or even "One Step Closer".

Added to the fact it has sampled one of the most iconic songs of the 1980s (which kept a certain Madonna from topping the Dance charts in the USA back in 1983), but has failed to deliver a great melody to match, unlike the fabulous use of sampling the Average White Band (TLC's Aint Too Proud To Beg); the Chi Lites (Beyonce's Crazy In Love); etc.

In short us "oldies" have been following music for long enough to have been able to spot the difference in hype between the real deals with the songs/talent to match (Sex Pistols, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Spice Girls, Oasis, etc) & similar acts that are over hyped hot air & cannot deliver (Generation X, Sigue Sigue Sputnik, Girl Thing, Menswear, etc).

In short if you promise something and are not able to deliver, then that is much worse than not making such grandiose promises in the first place and failing. Hence the interest and "constructive" feedback.

Wow this is such a good and constructive answer :)

I wonder what the blind fans will find to add this time.

couldnt agree more, :), absolutely spot on.

... and i agree 'if this is love' isnt as good a pop song as 'one step closer', which is quite ironic.

I will be the first to admit 'If This Is Love' is far from an "amazing pop masterpiece", but I believe they have potential and will have much better material up their sleeve. For instance, the free track they gave away for download 'Set Me Off' is better.
Cant wait for it to be released now, just want to see how well it does.

Can we PLEASE re-frain from saying whats already been said over and over again.

Anyone heard it recentley or seen it?

broadly i agree.... im not so sure about them having anything better though, if 'set me off' is really better then why wasnt it released as their debut single? 'issues' is good, true, but its not single material until theyd had a few upbeat hits first.

I think 'Set Me Off' is better and doesn't rely on a sample like the single does. I guess ultimately it's not a conventional single like 'If This Is Love' though.

Did you really think "Wannabe" was a good song and that the Spice Girls would make it from when they were at the stage that The Saturdays are at now? If I was this age in 1996 I would have thought the Spice Girls would have been just a fad and no one would remember them in a few years judging by "Wannabe" - much like we are now with The Saturdays. I just don't think "Wannabe" is that great a song and I'm a huge fan of the Spice Girls.

Don't take this as some kind of 'attack' on you - I'm not a huge fan of this song and I'm genuinely hearing from someone who was old enough at the time if they really thought the Spice Girls would be big or if they were just an overhyped girl band.

What kind of response is 'If Set Me Off is better, why wasn't it lead single?'?!

Could it be because quite simply a good song does not necessarily equal a good single?! A song can be fabulous but unsuitable for radio!

Simple - because not every artist on this Pop Forum samples (really badly) one of the greatest records ever made.

i know you quoted tip, but if i may ill put my views on this, tip will (or wont) answer later.

i thought 'wannabe' was a good pop song, but i didnt really think the spiceys would become so big... at first... it was clear as time went on that they were 'catching on' and soon became a perfect pop product. im personally not keen on the spiceys, but i do recognise that they were a huge commercial and influential success, fair play.

i have no axe to grind with the saturdays, im indifferent, i liked scj/8 as a pop product and i thought they were good enough pop acts, hence my interest in frankie/rochelles latest attepmt at pop stardom. but i dont buy the hype, and i dont think they will be the next sugababes/girls aloud or spice girls... but i dont care if im proven wrong.

1 its a pertinent response

2 yep you have a point... ive not heard it so i dont know whether or not it IS better (or as i suspect 'better' by personal choice), it might well be 'better' but not commercially.

Well why don't you take a listen to the youtube audio which I posted? :heehee:

i will when i get a mo... (eating soon then bb...lol)

there was loads of saturdays stuff, random vids from their tour shot by them the other week... but they all got pulled!

So you weren't sure on the Spice Girls at first, so that could insinuate that you didn't buy their hype at first - the same way that you aren't buying The Saturdays.

If we did a rewind to 1996 and we were faced with "Wannabe" with people saying they'll be "the next best thing" I doubt we'd believe it. It would be "oh look a manufactured product of Simon Fuller claiming to be the next big thing because a lot of cash was put into them" and we'd be proved wrong. I'm not saying it will happen with The Saturdays - I'm sure it would have exploded in popularity by now if it was - but it looks to me like they are similar situation as the Spice Girls were. (from my point of view, I was 6 when the Spice Girls came onto the scene )

yep... thats about it. im guessing by experience that the saturdays might not live up to the hype, but i might be wrong as my first initial thoughts on the spice girls were.
