Posted May 8, 200817 yr Hey! Yes I have also just got the album having seen him on Jools, I really like it a nice one to listen to on your ipod in the park. You may like to see this Tiscali Showcase: http://www.tiscali.co.uk/music/showcase/phil_campbell.html Also I really like this acoustic version of Cold Engines recorded for Jools Holland: http://www.bbc.co.uk/later/shows/series32/...ll_coldengines/ Him and Johnny Flynn are my recent 'discoveries'... both are cracking!
May 9, 200817 yr pretty good album there, i caught him at the borderline him supporting Jason Isbell - was very impressed
May 9, 200817 yr Author I had never heard of him before seeing him on Jools Holland, but he was signed 10 years ago to EMI. Did he release an album with them? Would you recommend to see him live?
May 10, 200817 yr I had never heard of him before seeing him on Jools Holland, but he was signed 10 years ago to EMI. Did he release an album with them? i have heard of him before - but didnt know that he was on emi that long ago - i've got a promo of his - but this features songs from this album: http://abi-rhodes.typepad.com/abi_rhodes_zigzag_wanderi/images/phil_campbell.jpg this is what reviewer Gavan Drohan has said on the amazon web page: By Gavan Drohan "Gavan" (Dublin, Ireland) - See all my reviews A long time beneficiary of the great Amazon reviewers and the music that I would never have stumbled upon, I feel I must help the uninitiated and unfamiliar on their quest to discover the great Phil Campbell. I first discovered Phil back in 1997 through my friend Mick (take a bow!) when as long time Q readers, he pointed me towards the track "Hope, Faith & You" which was featured on one of those Q sampler CD's which are so often binned. The track was listed under the moniker "White Buffalo". A lot of searching eventually led me to the exceptional debut album "Fresh New Life" under Phil's name. Ten years later & I still have this as a regular on ipod and CD. Following this, Phil did release a couple of albums under the band name "White Buffalo". Both are well worth checking out if you can find them; Waiting To Go Home (2002)& Last of the V8 Interceptors (2004). Following the release of V8, Phil broke up the band and reverted to being a solo artist. Joy was released in 2007 and is indeed a joy.
May 11, 200817 yr I swear someone called Phil Campbell supported Sandi Thom in Brighton in 2006 which I saw if its the same person, then he was the blandest person I have ever had the misfortune to watch in my life
May 12, 200817 yr I swear someone called Phil Campbell supported Sandi Thom in Brighton in 2006 which I saw if its the same person, then he was the blandest person I have ever had the misfortune to watch in my life well tbh the promo was very much like that - no tracks really stood out for me - but then again it was only about 50p
May 12, 200817 yr Author LOL!! Bland people can still have talent? ;) Interesting reading the review, clearly a big fan! I just read a BBC review saying he is "like James Blunt with some grit", which ties in with the bland comment! However I would say his album (that I have been giving a listen) is a good mixture of acoustic, country, folk and even riff based tracks. A good one for lazy summer days :-) http://www.bbc.co.uk/music/release/zc25/
June 5, 200817 yr Author OK. Now that I have had the album for a while I thought I would write a small review for you. Overall I really like this album ^_^. For people who like acoustic guitars, well structured songs, thought out lyrics and a slightly 'edgey voice' you should give this album a listen. The first 2 ('No Love Songs', 'Cold Engines') tracks are both strong tracks, then it slows right down for 3 (Sweet Sister) then the pace is nicely restored with 'Maps'. (ok I will stop with the links it'll take too long - lol!). The middle of the album sees 2 slow songs, which I am not so in to. 'Should Have Stayed at Home' is the track I would be most likely to skip, too middle of the road!! 'Same Old' funks it's up just a little bit, followed by my two favourite tracks, 'Joy' and 'Hey Mama', the later being a great one to 'acoustic ROCK' to! The final track is a piano and strings number that you sense has some meaning to it, a nice way to finish the album. I really like the blends of country, folk and rock that this album has. Phil Campbell's voice is great, not too quickly clean to be a wet blanket and not too husky to sound like Rod Stewart (not that there is anything wrong with him!). Overall I would say a solid 7.5 / 10. I would love to see more tracks like Hey Mama on the next album :yahoo: Anybody else got it?
July 10, 200816 yr Author Just wanted to add a quick note as I managed to see Phil Campbell live last week. I was very impressed, the performance was great - he was solo - full of emotion and the delivery of the songs was first class. BTW did anybody see him TV to do with this Independents Day http://www.independentsday08.com, apparently he was playing with Feeder and the Infadels, I would have like to have seen that.
July 15, 200816 yr Author ouY55Vy8pbU Phil Campbell - who's album I have been enjoying - is releasing a re-worked version of 'No Love Song' and it's bloody brilliant! The video makes me wish that summer could really be like that instead of p***ing it down! (Also look out for the cute lady on about 2 minutes. Using the power of google I've found out who she is... can you? ^_^ )
