following on from a comment made by c.o.d, who do you rate as the best man to front the faces?.

to me the small faces/faces were in both decades great acts with a sriting of classy pop. the 'marriot' years of the small faces they are one of our best and most influencial groups to emerge out of the swinging 60's. mod, britpop, at its roots.

after marriot left and after a short chart break they re emerged in the early 70's with blues singer rod the mod stewart. imho rods faces produced possibly the most intelligent pop of the early 70's.

im not sure that they can be compared as i doubt either could have done the other mans job, i cant imagine rod singing ichycoo park.. nor marriot 'stay with me'...

whadda you think?

Rod easily

Love stuff like Stay With Me, Maybe I'm Amazed, Pool Hall Richard, Too Bad and so on whereas I can think of 2 Marriott ones I like

Rod gets my vote

I liked a lot of the music by both, so hard to say. I remember Rod's version a bit better, so possibly him by a nose

No contest - Steve Marriott.

The Small Faces were my second fave band of the 60s after The Beatles

The got the name SMALL Faces because they were all small - none of them was more that 5'6"

I have all there original singles and albums. Also Steve's rare solo single - Give Her My Regards

It's a pity his life was cut so tragically short on 20 April 1991 in a fire at his home.

Never liked Small Faces much at all tbh

Loved Humble Pie though and have a fair bit of Humble Pie material so Marriott had talent for sure but Rod Stewart gave Faces that meatier edge to them music wise, Live At Filmore that Marriott did with Humble Pie is by far his best work

im for marriot, the small faces are still influencial in todays music and second only to the kinks as pioneers of 'mod' or 'britpop'.. stewart couldnt have sung the small faces hits... ok, marriot couldnt have sung the faces hits to the same effect, but the faces with rod stewart just have had the inpact on todays music like marriots small faces did.

imho rod stewarts best moment was as python lee jackson and their 72 hit 'in a broken dream'.

Steven Marriot by faaaaaaaaaaaaaar.

i never really liked The Faces. but The Small Faces, f***ing ace!

Steve Marriot all the way.

For me Steve is/was one of my ten favourite male vocalists of all time, I just love his hybrid rootsy, yet cockney voice, where as I've never liked Rod's voice. Marriot's influence on the likes of Paul Weller, Simon Fowler (OCS), & Gaz Coombes (Supergrass) if obvious to see.

Sure Rod made some great records in the early 1970s (a lot like his mates Elton John; Eric Clapton and his old Faces bandmate (Ronnie Wood's) next band the Rolling Stones), but creatively he has not done much since then, even if he has been successfully commercially.

I mean Do Ya Think I'm Sexy..... :puke2:

Steve Marriot for me singing All or Nothing. I love that song

But i do like Rod Stewart singing "You Wear It Well"

but thats the point..... both were good in their own way. i prefer the small faces over the faces but i still suggest that 71-73 the faces with rod stewart did the best pop at that time.... it was intelligent, had some depth, but was ultimately forgotten.

I think The Faces are probably just about ripe for a general rediscovery as they do seem to have been largely forgotten by many (probably due to being tarnished by Rod's woeful post '72 legacy - I mean does anyone like Sailing!)

good point....

and no, i detest 'sailing'

Did you know Rod Stewart's first hit Maggie May was originally the B-Side

The A-side was Reason To Believe which imo is miles better.

Reason To Believe reached #19 when it was flipped and Maggie May became the A-side

indeed i love 'reason to believe', although maggie may was a good pop song.

love the line "someone like you, makes it hard to live without, somebody else" .... its a superb love song.

To be fair it was the late great John Peel who was the first DJ to flip Reason To Believe and play the B-side.... which subsequently became a transatlantic #1 hit, which is why they got him in the band for the Xmas 1971 Top Of The Pops appearance as a thank you.... see the earlier posted clip.
