Hipgnosis was a British art design group that specialized in creating cover art for the albums of rock musicians and bands, most notably Pink Floyd, Genesis, Led Zeppelin, and The Alan Parsons Project. Hipgnosis consisted primarily of Storm Thorgerson, Aubrey Powell, and later, Peter Christopherson.

Do you think album covers were much better in the 70's and 80's than they are now?

i reckon album covers of the 70's were still heavily artistically influenced by psychedelia of the 60's... hippy stuff... acid... lsd.. mushies!!! :lol: so i reckon 70's albums were far more artistic.

Apart from the Floyd and Gabriel ones, I'm not keen on any of their other designs.

 

Best era for design? The 80s... 4AD employed 23 Envelope in this period, and their designs for Cocteau Twins, Throwing Muses, Dead Can Dance... best album covers ever IMO.
