I liked Malta 2003 :o It was a bit sub-par though...I thought it was heading for mid-table tbh :o

And Mando SO deserved top 10 that year :(

I agree, I really liked Mando :o far better than Greece's absolutely appalling 2002 entry

17. Abba – Waterloo (Sweden - 1st, 1974)

Who could have predicted the effect this would have on the career of a then random Swedish pop band! Practically inventing Schlager, Waterloo is an absolutely brilliant piano-pop song which needs no introduction, and by far the most well known Eurovision song ever! And they won in the Brighton Dome, 15 minutes away from my house

16. Helena Paparizou - My Number One (Greece, 1st 2005)

Eurovision must be very different for its performers now...you can imagine the whole crowd singing along to this song the first time Helena sang it in the 2005 final, whereas previously the contest was the first time most people heard the songs...by far the favourite that year and eventually won after a slow start, the excellent and gorgeous Helena Paparizou left Antique and gave Greece their first win with this frankly incredible pop song! I put a fiver on it...I can't have won much though because the odds were ridiculously short!

15. Charlotte Nillsson - Take Me To Your Heaven (Sweden, 1st, 1999)

1999 and Abba fever was absolutely everywhere, as it was the 25th anniversary of their win...Charlotte, Selma and Precious (!?!) were the favourites but it was always going to be the supreme schlager anthem which owed more than a little to Waterloo that would win. The song went top 20 in the UK so hopefully Hero can do the same later this year! Am I the only one that's reminded by christmas music from the chord progression, melody and instrumentation of this track :o It's like Wizzard 25 years on

Greece's 2002 entry was hilariously awful

Cyprus were truly deluded to give THAT 12 Points...and I remember they voted first so Greece went straight into the lead

14. Ruslana - Wild Dances (Ukraine - 1st, 2004)

Upon hearing the 2004 entries, this immediately stood out as the winner so I placed my only bet of that year on Ukraine and of course won some money. A frankly excellent Xena inspired ethno-pop chant, this track can also be found on the soundtrack to one of the radio stations in Grand Theft Auto IV! Talk about bringing Eurovision to a whole new audience!

I really didn't think it'd win ([H]Elena) :o
 I like Ruslana's song much

13. Serebro - Song Number One (Russia - 3rd, 2007)

With no live performances behind them, people wondered if Serebro could cut it on the night...even if they had sung like three strangled cats, this incredible electro-pop song would have found itself a place in the top ten. Luckily, the girls were absolutely stunning, looks and vocals wise and came a well deserved 3rd, though it deserved to win. Now THIS is what the Girls Aloud vs. Sugababes duet should have sounded like...

really :o who did you think would win?

I was very impressed to hear Wild Dances on Vladivostok FM, with Ruslana hosting! :heehee: And I would have been elated if Serebro had won last year  Hopefully they can compensate for it this evening :kink:

12. Julie & Ludwig - On Again...Off Again (Malta - 12th, 2004)

More underrated greatness from Malta, this odd but brilliant p-opera duet from Julie and Ludwig was absolutely great...obviously it was never going to win so I was behind Ruslana all the way but I do still listen to this song more than Wild Dances. I was honoured to have an e-mail conversation with Julie herself back in 2004 as well

11. Scooch - Flying The Flag (For You) (UK - 22nd, 2007)

Everything about this song and performance was so so wrong yet so right...I confess to voting for Scooch on Making Your Mind Up because I thought the sexual innuendo of the performance was very funny the first time. Obviously a lot of the European audiences wouldn't have picked up on it and it obviously came across as some lame wannabe Europop song about aeroplanes...so gloriously over the top and I always had a soft spot for Scooch, especially their 2000 single For Sure. Should have been top ten...

Enjoying the list so far. A good batch of songs!

EDIT: Oh scrub that....I just saw Scooch.

Oh my :heehee: I'm awaiting the translated version which will doubtless have a few excerpts of English-mangling genius a la 'get you to my bad ass spinning for you'
