Alice Cooper and Slash honored at MusiCares event

By Gerry Gittelson > Staff Writer

The theme was sobriety for musicians, but it was still quite a rock n’ roll party Friday at the fourth annual MusiCares benefit concert honoring Alice Cooper and Slash at the Music Box in Hollywood.

Cooper and Slash received awards for their contributions to MusiCares, a local organization devoted to helping addicts and alcoholics in the music industry in the recovery process.

Cooper and Slash kept their acceptance speeches short, instead preferring to make their points on stage, as Slash jammed with an all-star ensemble featuring a revolving door of singers that included Cheap Trick’s Robin Zander, Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington, then Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler to the roaring approval of a sold-out crowd. Tyler sounded in fine form jamming his way through “Mama Kin,” one of Aerosmith’s early hits.

Then it was Cooper’s turn, and the shock rocker turned in a blistering 20-minute set that didn’t include his usual props such as

a guillotine or a large snake but proved nonetheless that rock is alive and well, even if you’re 60 years old – and in Cooper’s case,

26 years sober.

“We rocked the house,” said Keri Kelli, one of Cooper’s guitar players.

Before Slash performed, Tyler presented the former Guns N’ Roses guitarist and admitted heroin addict and alcoholic with a medallion celebrating two years of sobriety.

“This whole thing is pretty surreal,” Slash said. “It hasn’t really sunk in. I came to this event two years ago and I was loaded, so the

whole thing has come full circle. It’s a real honor to be here.”

Check out the review of the MAP Fund event from Sydney Hanel who won the pair of tickets to see Steven at the MAP Fund Benefit Concert on Friday, May 9th!

~~~~~~~~~~
Steven Tyler at the MusiCares MAP Fund Benefit Concert
Oh my Rock God…Half way through his set, honoree Alice Cooper stated, “The last thing you wanna do is follow Steven Tyler on vocals. He’s got the best voice in the world.” And fellow Aerofans, you would not have been disappointed. Blown away is more like it. The Music Box at Fonda is a very intimate venue on Hollywood Boulevard. Even though we were on the balcony, it felt like seeing Steven in a small club. Backed by members of Camp Freddy, and along with Slash (who rocked) and Duff, the Demon delighted everyone with an awesome performance of “Mama Kin.” However, to follow was the MOST RAUCOUS, RAUNCHY, EPIC, and AWESOME rendition of Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love” I have ever heard (and I have seen Page and Plant live)!!!! Oh man, I could’ve died. I think some people left after that….you did not need to see or hear anything else! As I’m sure you expected, Steven Tyler, once again, blew everyone away. Steven also presented the “From the Heart” award to Slash. It was really cool to hear him speak, again, in such an intimate setting and in such a candid way (stumbling thru the teleprompter and telling the guy to roll it one screen back). Overall, the event was amazing and its cause is great. The MusiCares MAP fund was developed to provide access to addiction treatment for members of the music community. It was great to see Slash and Alice Cooper perform, rockin’ harder then ever, and sober. Like Steven, they are living testimonies of recovery! Other sweet performances included Blind Melon and Chester Bennington of Linkin Park, who did a great rendition of Alice Cooper’s “Eighteen.” Anthony Kiedis paid a touching tribute to Bob Timmons, addiction specialist and important figure to many recovering musicians. Thank you, Steven, for never ceasing to amaze me! Your voice and musical talents are truly gifts possessed by no other. I want to thank AeroForceOne for providing me with these tickets and this awesome opportunity. I truly feel lucky to have been able to see Steven perform in this setting. He is, undoubtedly, only getting better!!! The only thing missing was getting to hang with the Demon himself, but hey, I’m not complaining! Thanks AF1 for an awesome evening that my husband and I will both remember! Oh, but sorry guys, they wouldn’t allow any cameras!
Keep Rockin’,
Sydney
P.S. – The good news for us, Aerofans? When Steven came out to the podium, and the crowd started cheering and the girls started screamin’, he said, “I love it when you do that!!! I’ve been off the road for too long!”
