It was a case of life imitating art when 'paparazzi' photographers scoured Torbay after it was reported that top singing star Joss Stone was filming a wedding scene in the resort. The Devon singer is appearing in new film Snappers, which is about a star trying to escape the press. Ironically, that is just what happened after the film's producer George Bamby told radio listeners yesterday morning that they were filming in a church in Torquay with Joss Stone in a wedding dress.

But he told the Herald Express it was a 'closed' set and taking photographs would give the game away in the plot about an actress who seeks refuge in a Paignton holiday camp from the paparazzi.

So in true paparazzi tradition, the Herald Express tracked them down to a church in Kingskerswell and then on to the Bickley Mill pub at Stoneycombe.

The vicar of St Mary's in Kingskerswell, the Rev John Leonard, didn't know that he had had an international star in his church.

"They said they wanted to do some photographs here as it is such an idyllic English church. But that grew into a whole morning's filming," he said.

"They arrived early and finished about lunchtime. I think I heard someone say Joss Stone was there, but I wouldn't know who she was.

"If the film comes over well we will be very pleased. I don't know anything about the film and hopefully it is not something that will discredit the community of Kingskerswell.

"I think it is very good that the building could be used for something like this, which if we get some kind of credit could be a good advert for the church."

At the Bickley Mill pub in Stoneycombe yesterday afternoon, producer George Bamby was again adamant that to show Joss in her wedding dress would spoil the story. So like good paparazzi we hung around for hours, patiently waiting for a mere glimpse of the star - just as the star-studded cast will be doing for the film which is to premier in the English Riviera Comedy Film Festival in September.

Several of the cast have been staying at Beverley Park at Goodrington, again echoing the storyline of the film where the film star moves to a holiday park to get away from the press attention.

Claire Jeavons of Beverley Park said staff recognised some soap stars: "They have seen Phil Middlemiss from Coronation Street and we understand Joss Stone could be coming here and Denise van Outen.

"They are expecting filming to take up to five weeks and it seems like they are working long days. There has been a lot of coming and going."
