Posted May 14, 200817 yr Their Narrow Stairs is going to chart heaven. Death Cab for Cutie’s sixth album, and second for Atlantic, is headed for #1 on next week’s HITS sales chart, according to our network of retailers still standing around the country. Based on one-day sales reports, the critically acclaimed new release, fronted by the eight-minute-long single, “I Will Possess Your Heart,” will sell around 140k in its first week and easily end Neil Diamond’s reign atop the chart. The big news, though, is Wales songstress Duffy, whose highly touted Mercury/IDJ bow, Rockferry, is showing surprising strength in the marketplace, with a total of 55k which will have it debuting inside the Top 10. Reprise/Rhino’s Frank Sinatra collection, part of WMG’s comprehensive deal with the late legend’s estate, should sell between 65-70k. Jason Mraz, now on Atlantic for his new album We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things, is headed for 60k in sales. Veteran soul star Keith Sweat’s Rhino release, Just Me, should do around 30-35k, while Universal Republic Knoxville, TN, rockers 10 Years are in the 25-30k range for Division, their follow-up to 20005’s The Autumn Effect, which produced the #1 Modern Rock hit, “Wasteland.” SOURCE: Hits Daily Double (5/14p)

May 15, 200817 yr Death Cab For Cutie On Track For Billboard 200's Top Spot Death Cab For Cutie May 14, 2008, 8:25 PM ET Geoff Mayfield, L.A. First day sales of Death Cab For Cutie's "Narrow Stairs" put the album on course to top next week's Billboard 200, according to the Nielsen SoundScan Building chart released Wednesday (May 14). Based on unweighted sales from nine leading music accounts through the close of business Tuesday (May 13), "Narrow Stairs" registered a first-day sum of 54,000 copies. That represents a significant lead over Building chart runner-up Jason Mraz, another artist distributed by the Atlantic Group. Sales through Tuesday for Mraz's "We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things" stood at 21,000. Industry pundits project that "Stairs," Death Cab's second major label effort, will tally in the range of 135,000-145,000 in its first week, which should be more than enough to seal the top spot. Among recent rock albums, a first-day Building sum of 54,000 for Panic At The Disco's "Pretty.Odd." led to a final tally of 131,000, while a 53,000 start for Kid Rock's "Rock N Roll Jesus" translated to a full-week tracking of 172,000. Earlier Building tallies by Gavin DeGraw and Serj Tankian suggest Mraz could start north of 60,000. Of his two earlier full-length studio albums, 2005 release "Mr. A-Z" earned his best chart rank, opening at No. 5 with 81,000 sold. Other new releases on the Building chart's top 10: Welsh rookie Duffy's "Rockferry," (No. 5, 16,000), Frank Sinatra's "Nothing But the Best" (No. 6, nearing 16,000) and Keith Sweat's "Just Me" (No. 9, 11,000).
May 16, 200817 yr More from HDD: THEY WILL POSSESS YOUR CHART: Death Cab for Cutie's second major label release, on Atlantic, will top next Tuesday's chart with a projected first-week tally of 140-150k, spurred by the hit single I Will Possess Your Heart. That puts the Seattle PoMo band far ahead of Reprise's still-dead Frank Sinatra, who'll bow in the neighborhood of 80-85k, and Island/IDJ's Mariah Carey, with an expected 65-70k. The debuting Jason Mraz (Atlantic) and Leona Lewis (Syco/J/RMG), should complete the Top 5, as both roll toward 60-65k. Welsh thrush Duffy (making her debut on the revived Mercury label), who's riding a growing buzz from her irresistible single Mercy, will battle second-weeker Neil Diamond (Columbia) and the down-sliding Madonna (WB) for the sixth position, as all three head toward 55-60k. Toby Keith (Showdog/UMe) should wind up at #9, with 45-50k, while a fifth debut, 10 Years (Universal Republic), will vie with Keith Sweat (Rhino), both trending toward 30-35k. And now, we return our focus to the second round of the NBA Playoffs. (5/16a) 01 Death Cab for Cutie: 140-150k 02 Frank Sinatra: 80-85k 03 Mariah Carey: 65-70k 04 Jason Mraz: 60-65k 04 Leona Lewis: 60-65k 06 Duffy: 55-60k 06 Neil Diamond: 55-60k 06 Madonna: 55-60k 09 Toby Keith: 45-50k 10 Keith Sweat: 30-35k 10 10 Years: 30-35k
