Pussycats, where have you been?

Be careful what you wish for 'cause you just might get it."

This cautionary message comes courtesy of the Pussycat Dolls, whose comeback single - When I Grow Up - hints at the darker side of global fame.

"The song is meant to be playful," says lead singer Nicole Scherzinger. "But on the twist side of that, it's a little warning.

The band's second album is called Doll Domination

"I think people see us and think: 'Wow, I want to do that. I want to be famous, I want to see the world, I want nice cars, I want groupies.'

"But it's not going to be an easy road getting there and it's not as glamorous as it always seems."

Scherzinger should know. After a decade spent toiling at pop's coalface in a succession of failed bands and reality shows, she finally struck gold with the Pussycat Dolls in 2005.

Their first hit, the sultry Cee-Lo Green-penned Don'tcha, went straight to number one on both sides of the Atlantic. Its cheeky hook - "don't you wish your girlfriend was hot like me?" - instantly entered the pop lexicon.

Four more top 10 hits followed, along with a multi-platinum album, sponsorship deals, a TV show and tours with Rihanna, Black Eyed Peas and Christina Aguilera.

'Gruelling'

Sixth doll Carmit Bachar (far right) quit the band earlier this year

So you could be forgiven for thinking that any complaints about the pressures of fame were the usual "poor little me" celebrity whining. But Scherzinger insists "we all got our own traumas".

Certainly, she has had a rough couple of months. Her solo album was put on hold after it failed to capture radio's attention and, in March, fellow Doll Carmit Bachar quit the group.

"You don't see all the stuff that goes on behind the scenes," says Scherzinger. "It's a lot harder than people imagine."

The solo record was shelved, she says, because "I didn't want to miss out on the PCD moment".

And she understands why others might not want to endure the "gruelling schedule" of being a Pussycat Doll.

"We train our minds, our bodies, like we're training for the Olympics," she says.

"Not only do we rehearse the dancing every day, but I have a personal trainer and I make time to train every day.

"You sacrifice your own personal time. You don't get to be with loved ones, you don't have time for yourself.

"But it's worth it. When the train's coming, you gotta jump on it - because it's not always going to be around."

'Boot camp'

Doing the first PCD album, we didn't know what our sound was. Now we have to beat those songs

Nicole Scherzinger

In person, Scherzinger's soft Kentucky drawl masks the sheer ambition of this statement, but there is no doubt that she is working hard to capitalise on her moment in the spotlight.

A stint in the studio with producer du jour Timbaland resulted in six songs in as many days.

"I felt like I was in boot camp," she laughs.

The singer also took on the responsibility for producing her bandmates' vocals.

A video of recording sessions on the group's official website shows her instructing 26-year-old Ashley Roberts to "get on it better, accent it better".

Didn't this cause friction within the quintet?

"Well, vocals are kind of my thing," Scherzinger says. "And I would never boss anyone around.

"I produce my own vocals, so I know how to speak to other singers. I don't have very many skills in life - but that's one of them!"

Turner tribute

The album, Doll Domination, is due out in September. It ditches the cover versions and show tunes which betrayed the band's cabaret beginnings on their debut.

Scherzinger promises a few surprises as well.

Scherzinger says she is "still working" on her solo album

"We've got one song that's called I Hate This Part where my inspiration was Sting and Journey," she reveals.

"And we did another song with Timbaland called In Person which kind of sounds like old Tina Turner."

The songs have been specifically designed to work on stage in anticipation of next year's world tour.

"I think that's what's so special about the Dolls and what separates us from other pop groups ," says the star.

"We have a history - a very theatrical background."

Scherzinger's ambitions don't end there. She insists she "will go back" to her first love, musical theatre - she has appeared in Chicago and Showboat, and studied theatre at university.

And what about a Pussycat Dolls musical?

"Most definitely. I think more so that than anything, because it reaches people all over the world.

"I grew up watching All That Jazz and films like that - and that's the time I come from.

"It's just finding the right one... or writing my own."

That album title is beginning to seem less like a clever piece of alliteration and more like a mission statement.

When I Grow Up is released in the UK on 8 September. Doll Domination follows a week later.

Pussycat Dolls are in KL, Malaysia

It's only days before the MTV Asia Awards, and the first of the many international acts have already landed in town. Today, the Pussycat Dolls previewed a few tracks from their upcoming album Dolls Domination (set to release on September 15) at their South East Asian press conference.

The lead single off Dolls Domination, 'When I Grow Up' (produced by Rodney Jerkins), is already making waves on the charts, making it the Pussycat Dolls' fourth top ten single on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Among the producers they worked with on the album are Cee-Lo, Scott Storch, Ryan Tedder (OneRepublic), Darkchild and of course, Timbaland. Besides the lead single, other tracks include 'Away', 'Barely Breathe', 'Bottle Pop', 'Fly The World', 'If I Were A Man', 'In Person' and 'Psycho'. Look out for a faux Brit accent on the track 'Watchamacallit' (sp?).

At the press conference Nicole, Ashley, Melody, Kimberly and Jessica also discussed Kim Kardashian's upcoming stint as a guest Pussycat Doll. The girls also revealed that they will embark on a world tour that will bring them back to the SEA region (some time in March/April 09).

The girls trying on the sarongs they were presented to by their label, Universal Music.

Nicole wants everyone to know she is wearing a sarong. Please don't think she's wearing a wack double layered outfit.

Its not a PCD interview, nor should it be called Pussycats, where have you been. Its "Scherzinger, where have you been?"

Bow down to the fierceness that is Jessica and Kim

The Dolls On T-Mobile Transmission

o the Dolls have started European promo this week and a few hours ago was the recording of T4's T-Mobile Transmission. I went along to the recording for their interview on the show, it was great to see them all, they were all really nice, beautiful girls!

I think the interview could have been more in-depth in terms of the questions they were asked, even though it was light-hearted and fun. Of course Nicole couldn't have escaped without being quizzed about a certain Formula 1 driver, Lewis Hamilton! I think the fans would have liked to know more about the upcoming album, what PCD's favourite tracks are on Doll Domination etc.

While the camera guys were setting up in between filming, Jessica told me that the song 'Bottle Pop' which features on their upcoming album, features a certain rapper (one of which has worked with the Dolls before)! Jessica also said that all the Dolls will get solo parts on the album - exciting!! PCD will be back in the UK next month to promote Doll Domination.

Their interview will air on Channel 4 (UK) on Saturday 23 August at 00:12 and 9am that morning.

The rapper on Bottle Pop; Will.I.Am.

Nice to see they will be able to hit back at comments of them just being a pretty face. Im excited to hear Ashley's solo and Melody

Nicole Scherzinger PCD Interview MTV UK

SOURCE

EXCLUSIVE | MTV News spoke to the star about PCD's new album and (listen up Lewis) what she looks for in a man...

Pussycat Dolls are returning to the music scene with a second album Doll Domination after taking a break while leader Nicole Scherzinger worked on her solo career. In the break she also met her boyfriend Lewis Hamilton at the MTV Europe Music Awards. MTV News caught up with Nicole to talk about the girls new album and her romantic life.

MTV: Hi Nicole- Is it good to be back with Pussycat Dolls?

It feels so good- on the plane over here I was excited because it’s been so long since we’ve been over in the UK and Europe. We feel really strongly about the album.

Why did you decide to stop working on your solo career?

For me it was what I wanted to do. I’m a relentless perfectionist and I realised that a lot of the songs from my record should be Pussycat Dolls songs including (single) When I Grow Up.

Next year I want to put out my solo album and I think the two will be able to co-exist nicely together.

How different is this album from your first with PCD?

Our old PCD fans will love it but hopefully we’ll get some new ones too. We worked with Rodney Jerkins, Cee-Lo and Timbaland. Having a break from the Dolls album I thought I could bring different styles.

We always want to keep people guessing. This album has a lot of heart and soul and songs that hopefully can connect with fans on a more personal and vulnerable level.

Does that mean there are more ballads?

There are definitely still the club-dance songs but also some ballads and more alt pop-rock songs. There are songs that people can relate to when they are going through a hard time in a relationship. Overall I think that this album says a lot! But then we also have a fun song called Take Over The World.

Which producers did you work with?

Rodney Jerkins worked on it and Timbaland exec produced the whole album. He had his own visions of what he wanted for the group. We have dance club soms and some 60s or 70s joints that Tim brought out of us.

Cee Lo did a song called Love Gun with a 60s/70s vibe too. When I sing that song I was honing it to an old Tina Turner or Aretha type vocal. Cee Lo is such a good friend of mine and our new song is not what you would expect.

Tell us about your single When I Grow Up?

Rock City wrote the song with us in mind. I love the sound- it’s really raw and really funky. It was good coming out with a song that people could dance to and that has an attack to it! The lyrics play with what it is like to be famous.

What is it like to be famous?

It has its ups and downs. It’s not as glamourous as people think. People don’t see the work that goes in to touring but its definitely worth it. It’s not party all the time like people think- sometimes when I get the chance I am too tired to party!

What about tabloid intrusion?

It’s interesting- I think my personal life is different, I want to known for my music.

There was a story recently about you dating Will.I.Am?

That is the funniest thing because Will is like my Brother and I don’t know when the last time I had seen him was. He has been on tour.

What do you look for in men?

I look for someone with a good heart. Someone who is confident and successful and goes after what he wants. I love a guy with a great sense of humour.

When I Grow Up is out September 8. Doll Domination is out September 22

"The Pussycat Dolls get their claws out"

Female First

She's one fifth of one of the biggest and sexiest girl groups around so we caught up with Pussycat Doll Ashley Roberts for a chat about the groups new single When I Grow Up and album Doll Domination.

*Hi Ashley. What have you been up to recently?

Just promoting the album, Doll Domination. it drops September 15th and we've just been basically on a promo tour getting the word out!

*You've taken the music industry by storm, you're one of the most popular girl groups around. When did you realise that the Pussycat Dolls had made it?

I think when we just started to get to travel to so many places around the world and have so many different cultures know our music and know the words to our songs. I think that was when we were like, 'Wow this thing is so much bigger than we ever expected it to be!' It's pretty cool.

*Your new single When I Grow Up is out in the UK in September but it's already been released in the US. What was the reaction like to it?

*The reaction so far has been really great. The video's doing really well. the kids seem to like it a lot. It's been up and down the top ten in the states. We love the UK they've always been so supportive of us so I can't wait to see how they take to the song and how they like it.

Your new album Doll Domination comes out in September too. What can we expect from it?

I think you can expect a lot of different kinds of music. You know we have our up tempo dance songs of course that all the PCD fans want but we also have some really nice slow ballad songs that are really vulnerable and I think it's a different side of the Pussycat Dolls that maybe some people haven't seen.

Do you have a favourite track from the album?

Everybody asks me that but it changes every day! I really really love the music on this next album. Right now there's a song that we have called Elevator that i just love. i think the words are awesome and i think the kids will really relate to it.

You've worked with many people, Timberland, Will.i.am, Busta Rhymes, well everyone really! Is there anyone left that you would like to work with?

Yeah I'd love to work with Pharrell or Kanye that would be awesome. Even get some girls involved like Beyonce, Shakira would be fun!

Nicole, melody and Jessica have all done some solo work away from the band. Do you have any plans to?

Yeah i actually did a small role in a movie called Make It Happen. The Weinestein Brothers were part of it, Darren Grant was the director. And I actually had to turn down the lead in a movie due the Dolls schedule so I guess you can look forward to seeing that. And each of us are doing a solo song that will be released as kind of like a bonus, a separate part to the album. So I know the fans have been really anxious to hear each of us sing so it will be a really cool way just to get to know us as individuals.

*Is that something you'd like to get into then, acting?

Yeah defiantly. I really wanna get involved in some romantic comedy stuff where I just get to have fun on screen and hopefully people will come and watch it and laugh and just enjoy themselves.

*You haven't released a bad song yet so what is your favourite of them all?

Gosh, that's a tough one. it's pretty awesome whenever Don't Cha comes on just because it was the first song we ever released off the first album. As soon as that bass line hits it's like all the audience and the fans know the song so well so I guess I would have to say that.

*You’re now a five piece since Carmit left, is there a big difference between being five and being six?

Yeah we definitely miss Carmit. She was a strong performer and one of our sisters and we definitely had to each step it up a notch having one girl gone. But we support her, i just recently talked to her when I was back home, she's working on her show. We all love her so much but the five of us have really come together and we're really close right now so I think it's stronger than ever.

*What other music acts are around at the moment do you like?

I love Adele, I love Coldplay's new album. Lil Wayne's got some fun stuff out right now. i love Alicia Keys's new album. A little bit of everything, you know i love music so anything that touches me.

*Where do you see yourself in ten years time?

Oh gosh ten years. I hope that I'm having a good acting career, maybe a family. A little bit of everything! Happiness and success in life.

*What's in store for the Pussycat Dolls in the near future?

Well you know we drop the album September 15th so we're gonna be out promoting that and our world tour starts January 09 so we're gonna be hitting everywhere around the world and taking over!

*We ask everyone we interview to come up with a question for the next person we interview....and Yolanda from Phantom Limb wants to know; “Are you happy with your record deal?”

Well it's definitely different, I feel like we kinda opened up a can of worms on starting record deals in a different way. But you know it's tricky but we do actually embrace the record deal because it has its pro's and con's in other situations that maybe other people don't have so each to their own. I'm happy with it and right now were renegotiating so we're trying to make everybody happy and get what everybody deserves.
