Posted May 20, 200817 yr Voting in Eurovision is a joke; also with 40 odd countries there are far too many votes to cast So why not change it. My idea would be to have 15 or so celebrity judges who will cast their votes including a extra vote from a telephone poll of the whole of Europe – this would be much more interesting I would even watch. The Celeb judges could also be asked their opinions throughout the show as well kind of like American Idol etc. The judges could be people from the Eurovision past, ABBA, Cliff Richard, or even American Idol judges / pop stars etc – basically they need to be famous but also know what they are on about. I think they could be trusted to be independent and judge it on the music only, telephone votes obviously can not do this and before long Eurovision will just sink without a trace. I am not a Eurovision fan, but used to watch it when I was a kid. Now it is just a joke because of the voting + I can’t see how people can see it as anything but that. I did find the Irish song amusing because it is taking the p*** out of what Eurovision has become, so was interested to see if it got through. Anyway I was wondering if real Eurovision fans felt there was a need to overhaul the voting system + if not Why?
May 20, 200817 yr Yeah lets get rid of what's technically a democracy for something open to corruption and bribery. Good idea.

May 20, 200817 yr No, I don't think voting needs an overhaul. It's traditional how it is at the moment. Hopefully the two semi-finals has reduced the block voting a little this year. If we had 15 judges what nationality would they be? Surely some would be biased unless they were from somewhere like Asia, America or Australia - which wouldn't really make it a European contest.
May 20, 200817 yr Celebrity judges??? A jury panel would be more viable... Going back to jury voting would be the best solution to solve neighbourly and diaspora voting imo, but it isn't too bad as it is - the best song does tend to win. And Norway qualifying tonight proves that there is still an appetite for good music. Provided that wasn't the jury vote! Ireland and Estonia failing to qualify also reassures me that this thing people have for tacky novelty songs is wearing thin. ^_^
May 20, 200817 yr I think it's ok the way it is......I mean after all the best song usually shines through anyway. and David I think the worst thing about novelty acts is that at first everyones laughing and think it's great fun....but then when the time comes they're bored with them.
May 20, 200817 yr Yeah lets get rid of what's technically a democracy for something open to corruption and bribery. Good idea. A jury from each country would be more democratic than a load of countries voting for their neighbours (both EAST and WEST I'm referring to). It's become evident that if you send a good song, it plummets. If you send a typical esc song with a crazy stage performance, it plummets. So what gets you the points? Neighbours! As for tele-voting, the only reason why it is used these days is because of the money. I was never a fan of it. But everything is money money money. Without it, there would be no fancy contests. I think we should get back to the good old days and use a jury from each country.
May 20, 200817 yr and before long Eurovision will just sink without a trace. It gets 7million+ viewers in the UK alone and is still popular throughout europe, it has been going on for 53 years, i dont see it ending anytime soon. I am not a Eurovision fan That is clear from what you have said, and from what you want to turn it into, is just a europe wide version of the xfactor or american idol

May 20, 200817 yr But good songs do do well. :| They do? Pre-2007, when did a good quality song win? When I say "good song", I mean a song that has depth, has meaning, doesn't use raunchy dances and open shirts. So, good winners - 2006 - no 2005 - hardly 2004 - hell no 2003 - nup 2002 - neigh 2001 - LOL 2000 - nooo Maybe it's just my taste. But I don't think any of the above deserve to win. Edited May 20, 200817 yr by Cál
May 20, 200817 yr No one really tends to send ones with "depth" though tbh Cal, and if they do attempt to, a dreary tune comes with it. Portugal 2003 springs to mind. Israel's 2005 entry was excellent, but that did pretty well anyway. ^_^
May 20, 200817 yr Well, I know you won't find lyrical depth in the Eurovision. But even something that resembles a song would be nice. :P
May 20, 200817 yr Author No, I don't think voting needs an overhaul. It's traditional how it is at the moment. Hopefully the two semi-finals has reduced the block voting a little this year. If we had 15 judges what nationality would they be? Surely some would be biased unless they were from somewhere like Asia, America or Australia - which wouldn't really make it a European contest. Yeah fair enough there are a few flaws in that idea. I just think the current system is totally daft, if Greece and Cyprus are there you know where the 12 points are going. The points from Bosnia will go to Serbia or Croatia given that in Bosnia about 40% are Serb + 25% croat If Montenegro has joined the song contest this year that is another 12 point banker for Serbia. It is not even interesting to predict where the points are going to go anymore. Anyway I always wondered why they stuck with this crazy voting debacle. But as I am not a fan I will just leave it at that and let you enjoy whatever it is you enjoy about it.
May 20, 200817 yr Well Montenegro didn't qualify, so that's a 12 for Serbia gone. Hopefully Croatia will fail to qualify, which would just leave Serbia and Bosnia & Herzegovina to exchange 12 points. I know neighbour countries exchange votes, but could that be because they have similar tastes in music? If for some reason the UK split into Wales, Scotland and England, I'm sure we'd probably exchange high points a lot because the music would be from a very similar culture and tastes.
May 20, 200817 yr Don't forget all the semi-finalists who have been knocked out can vote too Adi. :( So Serbia will still be getting high points from Montenegro, Slovenia, Croatia and whoever else fails to qualify.

May 21, 200817 yr Don't forget all the semi-finalists who have been knocked out can vote too Adi. :( So Serbia will still be getting high points from Montenegro, Slovenia, Croatia and whoever else fails to qualify. so that's bad then? :???: Oro is amazing and maybe Russia will give it to Serbia 8 pts (10/12 - Armenia&Ukraine surely) :cheer:
May 21, 200817 yr so that's bad then? :???: Oro is amazing and maybe Russia will give it to Serbia 8 pts (10/12 - Armenia&Ukraine surely) :cheer: 'Oro' is a great song, but it doesn't need to rely on the 12s from all its neighbours.
May 21, 200817 yr I wonder if the UK will choose to give Serbia anything this year after we shunned Molitva...I think Oro is more accessible to be honest, more of a 'hit single' so it might get 2 or 3 points from us
