Run-DMC are possibly one of the first REAL hip/hop-rap groups/artists.

Hmm, I think it's a tad unfair to blame NWA.. Their first album "Straight Outta Compton" is edgy and brutal as fukk... "Efil4Zaggin" however is a bit pants....... -_-

 

Some of Ice Cube's solo stuff (especially "AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted") aint all bad...

If you ask me, Run DMC, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, and Beastie Boys are the best hip hop bands.

Ah, that's the point I was making. The creation of 'gangsta rap' took the sound away from its roots in block parties, lyrics that celebrated life rather than guns, bling etc. Although NWA didn't start it, they pretty much changed the face of hip hop, somewhat undoing Public Enemy's political rap good work.

 

I've got 'Straight Outta Compton' so I know it's good :D but I still think they've influenced a lot of the pish that's around now.

Look at N.W.A's main men Dr Dre & Ice Cube, there post N.W.A. careers have had more quality than 80/90% of acts of the genre.
