The outlook for the Big four(Germany, France, Spain and the United Kingdom) has been quite dire again this year. Finishing with Spain 15th, France 19th, Germany and UK equal last. Following on from equally dire 19th to 22nd placing last year.

Eurovisions big four need an even playing field for there extra money otherwise they will always be hanging out near the bottom each year until they withdraw.

One suggestion is to have the Big four entries played at some point during the semi-final. Perhaps in the interlude before the votes are announced. The extra exposure is to go some way to make up for the other finalist being played at least twice, both in the final and there semi-final.

Any other suggestions?

I heard UK had the worst ratings in years.

BBC1: Eurovision Song Contest Final 2008: 7.1m (34.7%)

versus

ITV1: Britain's Got Talent: 7.7m (37.2%)

Previous ESC UK ratings for the last 10 years (Final Position and where the UK entry peaked in the UK charts):

2008: 7.1m (25th #67)

2007: 8.77m (23rd #5)

2006: 8.33m (19th #8)

2005: 7.97m (22nd #18)

2004: 8.38m (16th #13)

2003: 7.94m (26th #15)

2002: 7.81m (3rd #13)

2001: 6.98m (15th #32)

2000: 6.54m (16th #34)

1999: 8.91m (12th #6)

Considering, we sent such a borefest of a song, that is not remotely popular in the UK (the least successful UK chart entry since 1989) and it was up against Simon Cowell's Britain's Got Talent I think the ratings did surprisingly well.

I don't think the Big 4 give money just to be sure one day they're going to win. They just give money because they are the richest countries as far as television is concerned, and they've been taking part since the begining. And they probably just like to be in the contest, no matter how they are humiliated every year... If Italy was still taking part, it'd be the Big 5.

But maybe it's time they decided to take part in the semi-finals and take real risks. But I know that France would not screen the final if they were missing. We don't broadcast the semi-finals.

Don't forget the UK and France are the two most successful countries in the history of the ESC (51 participations):

Victories: 5 each.

TOP 2: 9 (Fr) - 20 UK

TOP 5: 25 (Fr) - 29 (UK)

TOP 10: 34 (Fr) - 41 (UK)

Things dramatically changed from 2005, for both countries...

The big four would be on an "even playing field" with the other 21 countries if they sent songs worth voting for to start with...
yer i was having a think about this earlier and i agree they should play the Big 4s songs sometime during the semi-final.... would be more of a fairer chance -_-

yes I agree, although I thought France should have come top 10 after that excellent performance...

Germany were dire, Spain was awful and Andy was just embarassing and desperate for votes trying to get the crowd going...it wasn't his own concert for christ sake

They do - once on each of them! Granted, it isn't the whole song, but it's about 30 seconds of each, which is a pretty long segment.

I think that here is the problem that big four don't care about the Eurovision that much and they send bad song. Simply explanation. The time they send better song, they'll have better position.

This year Germany was the best of them, and Spain and France were terrible. UK was very easy to forget that it was even performed.

And the funniest thing in here is that those countries have the most famous singers which they can send, but they don't do that. That's why I thing they're not interested in ESC that much.

Although I love Sebastien and the song will climb into my Personal Chart top 5 this week, had I not heard the song before I don't think I would've been caught by it at all. I think it was overshadowed by a much stronger Ukranian performance directly before it. :( It did about as well as I thought it'd do tbh, though I did think it'd be top of the big 4!

Those fake beards the women were wearing were f***ing repulsive. I'm surprised it did as "well" as it did tbh; the camera work was shoddy and I don't think the song works that well live. I quite like the studio version though.

I thought the song worked better live...the backing vocalists were great...

No Angels were absolutely dire live...how on earth did these girls win Popstars!?!

Exactly, now that Germany sent its top-selling stars and got one of the last places, all your arguments about Big 4 not sending quality stuff disappear *puff~~*.

Please, UK, send Spice Girls or Robbie next year, and I can assure you that you'll get the same result. :D

Scooter would have done better  No Angels might be a successful band but they couldn't sing in tune to save their life

Have they had any success outside of Germany though? You've clearly not been reading properly as the theory isn't about having an artist who's had national success, you need one who's had INTERnational success, like Dima Bilan. Or Lordi who won.
