I agree - personally I've been over the moon with recent ESC contest results, because I haven't supported the UK since 2004 ... since then I've had a listen and chosen what I think are the best songs - funnily enough, I've always come out on top!!

The UK attitude towards the competition is appauling - I wouldn't even care that people take the p*** as long as they weren't hypocritical enough to turn around the day after the competition and say 'oh well it was all political again' .. when actually, the songs I'd (/we'd all) pointed out 2 months ago as potential winners all finsihed top 5!!

I take it you and Thisispop like my idea of hiring tATu for next year then.....

I wouldn't be against it at all

My initial reaction was 'but they've already done it in 2003 and came 3rd' - but I guess by that logic Dima Bilan came 2nd in 2006 and won it this year! Yep ... with a deacent song I'm sure tATu could do well for us, but I'm not sure they'd want to

This would hands down be one of the best things to happen to us, we'd actually have to try for once :smoke:

I think jury's should have 50 % control of the winner's choice.

otherwise the UK will never win Eurovision again even if the candidate was Amy Winehouse or Robbie Williams!!!

the europeans don't vote for britidh french or german candidates. it's a fact!!!!

Yes they do... and they did on Saturday. Just not in masses!

I 100% disagree with your post.

Bring in a jury, what a brilliant idea  ............................... NOT!

So that we can get a repeat of Spain's victory in 1968 when it beat Cliff Richard's Congratulations, because General Franco had bribed members of various other countries juries.

One thing you could guarantee is that it will be EASIER not harder to influence the result. For example, Russia could imply that if the jury of a neighbouring country did not vote favourably for them then they may have difficulty receiving their required supply of oil & gas, etc.

As for your points about the UK will never win Eurovision again.... did you read my earlier post?

Remember the UK finished 3rd in Eurovision less than two months after we (illegally) invaded Iraq from a starting position of second, etc.

Jessica Garlick actually went in 2002 Rich, but in 2003 (and 2004) we did finish second and third in the Junior Eurovision. Not as popular, but you still get the same sort of people voting.

I think you're missing something very important here. The same year you're talking about there was no Armenia, Georgia, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Belarus, Montenegro, Serbia, Moldova, Albania, Azerbaijan and Czech Republic in the contest. Now, did you count already? That makes 11 (eleven) Eastern countries NOT taking part and NOT voting! ESC was hardly as Eastern-oriented as it is now.

It's 2008 and you have all those 11 Eastern countries in now, so a good place for UK again is only possible with a jury intervention.

We invaded Iraq in 2002? Funny, I thought we did so in 2003.

And Iraq was just an easy excuse from people hiding the truth - we chose someone who wouldn't know what a note is if it slapped them around the face with a wet kipper (to quote Helen).

The most relevant point made :)

It's not relevant at all. Firstly, Czech Republic aren't associated to the Eastern Blocs in anyway. They're very much central around Poland/Austria/Germany.

Secondly, the poster also fails to mention that Andorra, Iceland, Ireland, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal or San Marino in it then either. So that's another 8 Eastern countries we've added too. Cancelled out, no?

Tomoe's point is vaild - but one could also combat it by saying that in the year Jessica did so well, we recieved points from Lithuania, Latvia, Slovenia, Malta, Turkey, Germany, France, Belgium, B&H, Finland, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, Israel, FYR Macedonia, Estonia, Greece & Austria.

Whilst there are a lot of Eastern countries who weren't in the contest that year, there are a lot which were in the competition both in Jessica's year and this year, and as such, although a lot of new countries didn't vote for us, neither did the ones from 2002 either.

Let's take a look at Jessica's highest votes from eastern countries...

8 from Finland - that's ahead of the 7 they awarded Sweden, but behind the 10 they gave Estonia. But Estonia did pretty well that year anyway...

7 from Bosnia-Herzegovina - ahead of the 2 they gave Croatia and the 1 they gave Slovenia

8 from Slovenia - ahead of the 2 they gave to Bosnia-Herzegovina, but behind the 12 they gave to Croatia.

8 from Lithuania - ahead of the 6 they gave Russia and the 7 they gave to Estonia. It was behind the 12 they gave to the eventual winner, Latvia, though.

I think this pretty much shows that neighbouring countries often do have to send a reasonably decent song - Croatia got very few points from their neighbours this year, for example - and that a good song from another country can crack the top two or three votes from another country. Incidentally, we got votes off every voting country in 2002 apart from Cyprus, Spain, Croatia, Russia and Romania.

I think the UK needs to accept the fact they were beaten fair and square by a multi-million selling Russian male heart-throb, who has won the MTV Best Russian artist for three years running and had already had #1's in 13 different countries BEFORE the ESC; performing a song co-written by a songwriter who has co-written Nelly Furtado's Maneater, Britney Spears' Gimme More & Break The Ice & Ashlee Simpson's Outta My Head & Little Miss Obsessive. Whilst the track was produced by Timbaland (I don't need to start listing the pop classics he has produced as it is very, very long....) Whilst the performance features triple World Champion & Olympic Champion Ice Skater and former Russian Sports Personality Of The Year; and a world renowned Emmy Award winning Stradivarius violinist. While the video for the Russian entry pulls on more heart-strings; than a series of talentless X-Factor performers with sob stories.

In short if in 2009 the UK was represented by Leona Lewis, performing a song co-written by Gary Barlow & Guy Chambers, produced by Brian Higgins/Xenomania, and was driven on stage by F1 racer Lewis Hamilton, and whilst performing the song Nigel Kennedy played, then that would not be as well known package as what the Russian entry put together this year.

and that's odd because Croatia's 2002 song WAS good, much better than the old man anyway

The Dima Bilan ESC winner was NOT produced by Timbaland. It was Produced by someone

who works at his Studio - Jim Beanz. Timbaland produced one of Dima's previous Russian

No.1 Hits - 'Number One Fan'.

It doesn't matter how little the UK pays towards The ESC. Once it becomes too much

of a pointless exercise for us to Enter, then we may as well tell it to 'get stuffed'.

It is good if the UK has to Qualify through the Semi Finals from now on. IF we find that

we hardly ever get through to the Finals, then we have yet another reason to get out.

After all - the Semis are NOT shown on UK TV, so if we don't make the Finals, we would

be stuck with a 3 Hour Final, that we have 100% no part in - and I truly doubt if the Contest

will hold its UK Audience figures under such circumstances. (As time would show!).

***CLARIFICATION - The Semis ARE shown on BBC3, but that Channel gets a UK Audience

Share of just 1.7% to 1.9% most of the time - very poor. So, IF our Entry has to Qualify

- via the Semis - and we do not make the Final, very few in the UK will see our Entry.

Also - with no UK Entry in the Final - on BBC1 - it is likely that more & more Britons would

simply cease watching any ESC Finals that we aren't in - and the ESC Finals may end

up on BBC3 in the end.....(There are now 61 Million people in the UK, & a tiny minority watch

anything on BBC3).

Just as ITV is likely to find that its Euro 2008 Football Coverage gets no where near the

Audiences that it would get with a UK Team in it.....

The Semis ARE shown on BBC3 and we're able to vote in one of them like any other country!

And if you think Euro 2008 ratings will be low you'll be in for a huge shock!

Timbaland did produce the track, as it was mentioned on Billboard.com

PS. If you think the UK ratings for Euro 2008 are going to be poor, then I think you are in for a big surprise.

Still, there will be at least 2-3 more Eastern countries to send similar "star entries", and the votes will go for them, not for UK.

Give up, guys, I like your songs, I liked Andy, the entire Bulgarian jury liked it, but you're not gonna make it anymore with this voting system. :(

Everywhere seems to be assuming that Timbaland produced 'Believe', but it was actually Jim Beanz.
