Yes, but Western in terms of "modern American".

Justin & Britney are American, are they not? Nothing wrong with an American sounding Eurovision song - surely it proves the debate tigerboy put foward?

And I'm not altogether sure what you're getting at with your Nordin countries comment?

I have to say I don't really see P!nk or Ana in Ani Lorak! Song-wise, I'd say it was closer to something that J-Lo might release.

That they send "schlagger", which is obviously a term for "old pop music". Norway made it into top 5 simply because Maria had a R&B ballad, and R&B is kind of modern now. However, if Europe (or at least its Eastern part which decides the winner) likes American-type of modern songs like Dima's one, then Nordic schlaggers are doomed. No matter how good some of them are (like Iceland this year).

'Hold On, Be Strong' is like no "R&B ballad" that I've ever heard...
Terry Wogan has blamed the East for being racist for the whole UK coming last thing in this year's Eurovision. Cheap shot, I think. Looks like it's all falling down!

Oh dear. So now he's blaming the fact that Andy's black on us not winning? :manson: Has he forgotten who won in 2001? Yes, a BLACK MAN, who got points from every voting country apart from Portugal, including nine 12s! Why can't he accept we sent a $h!t song or just retire and shut up. -_-

AGAIN, there were not so many Eastern countries in 2001. Nobody in East would vote for Estonia and those two now (although the song was pretty nice).

Why wouldn't they? Have all of eastern Europe all of a sudden become a bunch of racists? I could almost guarantee you that Latvia and Lithuania would give them their 12 points, just as they both did in 2001. And there were plenty of eastern countries in then... Bosnia-Herzegovina, Israel, Russia, Lithuania, Latvia, Croatia, Turkey, Slovenia, Poland, Estonia, Greece. Granted there aren't as many, but 11 out of 23 is still almost half...

No, not for that reason. Simply there are more powerful Eastern countries in ESC now (I don't mean powerful in terms of politics) who influence their neighbours easily. As far as I know, Estonia has never qualified since the semi-finals were introduced. Lithuania is doing poor too. Eastern Europe would still prefer Dima over those two guys that won it back in 2001, if they competed now.

So would I  But I have had Dima on repeat most of the day, so I'm biased.
