May 28, 200817 yr I agree the voting needs looking at in orde for everyone to have a fairer chance however this year the UK deserved what they got for me its one of their worst entries thati can remember and even the sales of the song in the uk refelct it hasnt taking well to the public as usually the uk eurovision song goes top 40 at the least scooch may not have done well but it sold reasonably well as a single and would have been a number 1 hit if it was a phyisical sales environment onloy
May 28, 200817 yr Bring it on I say - it'll force us into sending something that's gonna make it through the semi's IMO. I'm was also shocked at how much we spend on Eurovision when I read the figures last week. I'm positive we spend more flying Terry and 'his team' first class into Europe and then putting them up in a 5* hotel for a week than we do on the contest, and that's not even bringing his fee into it.
May 28, 200817 yr we the acts come free as the performer really only gets what ever profit the song makes plus a free flight and accomodation for week
May 28, 200817 yr The £173K paid by Uk is 10% of 'Eurovision money' or whatever you call it (Source Terry W.) So i'm sure they could easily find another way to get this revenue, If the UK was put in the semi's, i doubt it would ever quality, unless it was an amazing song, I think jury's should play an important part along with the public vote as well .
May 28, 200817 yr I really think we're going to withdraw at this rate, no guaranteed status, bottom finishes AND we contribute a large portion of money to it -_-
May 28, 200817 yr You can send anyone from anywhere in the world, so long as the song is written by people from the country in question. Okay, well, we get a good British songwriter to do the tune, a top producer to record it, then hire in tATu to sing it.... Sounds like a plan to me... We might even finish Top 5 next year. IN RUSSIA....
May 28, 200817 yr we contribute a large portion of money to it -_- If you honestly believe that 173 grand is a "large portion of money", you know sod all about broadcasting and production budgets, the BBC has an annual budget of over FOUR BILLION, try and work out £173k as a percentage of that., it is such a tiny FRACTION, that it barely even registers.... Wogan got paid £250K to talk sh"te for four hours...... Perspective people.....

I know full well about the BBC thankyou, considering I'm doing a journalism course at uni and am in the middle of revising. I meant we are one of the Big 4, one of the biggest investors - regardless of how much that is.
May 28, 200817 yr Plus other channels won't pick it up just imagine all the ad breaks thru it, it be a 5 hour show plus the semis on top of the finals, or even longer with more countries paticipating
May 28, 200817 yr I know full well about the BBC thankyou, considering I'm doing a journalism course at uni and am in the middle of revising. I meant we are one of the Big 4, one of the biggest investors - regardless of how much that is. The point I'm trying to make is that it's all made to sound like it's a big bloody deal that we're amongst the "biggest investors", like it's LOADS OF MONEY, but when you look at the actual figures, it's really pretty small potatoes tbh... I think that ESC could easily find another sponsor if UK decided to pull its funding, I'm pretty damn sure the Russian, Czech or Polish national broadcasters could find a spare £173k in their back pockets.... BBC pulling out would NOT be the disaster that's being implied, bottom line..... Why the hell SHOULD we have an automatic place in the final if all we're gonna do is take the p!ss and send out what is basically the equivalent of a pub reserve Karaoke team..... Fukk the UK, our attitude just seems to be that all we have to do is turn up and every bugger should be grateful and bow down and worship us no matter how sh!te we are.....
May 28, 200817 yr Plus other channels won't pick it up just imagine all the ad breaks thru it, it be a 5 hour show plus the semis on top of the finals, or even longer with more countries paticipating How do they manage it other countries though with regards to broadcasting...? The BBC is actually unique within Europe as a whole for being one of very few national broadcasters which don't carry advertising....
May 28, 200817 yr Paddy and Caroline were alright... but Paddy's pretty annoying. When they were about to reveal the tenth envelope in the second semi - Portugal - he started harping on about Ken Bruce commentating for Radio 2! :manson: It was just like FFS SHUT UP YOU PRICK. :heehee: That's what I was like when Dustin the Turkey wouldn't stop yapping when the bulgarian song(I think anyway) was starting. I really like the idea of making every country have to qualify, as it will make the big four have to put in more effort. plus if they big four start putting in effort it might influence other western countries to do better
May 28, 200817 yr It would be great if the big 4 had to qualify. Obviously, the host country will be in the final automatically, disaster if they didn't get through to the final!
May 28, 200817 yr Author How do they manage it other countries though with regards to broadcasting...? The BBC is actually unique within Europe as a whole for being one of very few national broadcasters which don't carry advertising.... Other countries have ad-breaks when they have breaks inbetween the songs and the voting. On Saturday it was when that strange music came on and the paint was being splashed around on screen. They're only one minute long ad-breaks I think, but every other country aside from the UK does it I think!
May 28, 200817 yr How do they manage it other countries though with regards to broadcasting...? The BBC is actually unique within Europe as a whole for being one of very few national broadcasters which don't carry advertising.... After every 6 or 7 songs we got a visit to those two morons in the 'Green Room'. I assume that's when the majority of countries see adverts. There's also the interval where atleast two ad-breaks could be fit in and IIRC there's a gap in voting too.
May 28, 200817 yr RTÉ took breaks. Thank God... We didn't have to listen to those presenters sing. :drama:
May 28, 200817 yr I always wondered why we never saw much of those green room presenters. I was begining to think it was hardly worth hiring them if they were just going to go to them three times (once in each semi and once in the final)
May 28, 200817 yr Plus other channels won't pick it up just imagine all the ad breaks thru it, it be a 5 hour show plus the semis on top of the finals, or even longer with more countries paticipating Well how many hours / amount of money do ITV spend on rubbish like Britain's Got (No) Talent (what the f*** do Piers Morgan & Amanda Holden know about what is a good act????); Z-Factor (where the judges are more fake than the WWE and the cutest person with the best sob story wins ahead of a vastly superior talent) & Channel 4 spend on Big Brother. And you are telling me that no other channel would be interested in a show that is shown across all of the Europe, where the last two winning acts have sold between them over 40 million records? I think it is an absolute nerve for the Great British public to whinge about the ESC like Wayne Rooney after he has thrown his dummy out, when last year we picked Scooch ahead of the fantastic Cyndi song (which finished SECOND!!!!! out of FOURTY-THREE runners up in the ESC runners up competition - what that I hear is that the sound of silence as the Euro sceptics "its fixed we can never win it brigade" have a gigantic sized hole shot through their theory, that "everyone hates us we can never win even if we sent The Beatles or Queen, blah blah" when they conveniently forget that we finished 3rd a few years ago from the draw of 2nd spot two months after we had invaded Iraq). As Scott (Grimly) has said, we need to start treating the competition as seriously as Eastern European & Scandinavian countries. Until we do that we have zero right to complain about the voting. As Jessica Garlick's & Cyndi success (in the runners up competition) prove otherwise. If the competition is a fix then why did Russia finish outside the Top 10 in 2004 & 2005; Ukraine finish outside the top 10 in 2003 & 2005; etc.
May 29, 200817 yr Why the hell SHOULD we have an automatic place in the final if all we're gonna do is take the p!ss and send out what is basically the equivalent of a pub reserve Karaoke team..... Fukk the UK, our attitude just seems to be that all we have to do is turn up and every bugger should be grateful and bow down and worship us no matter how sh!te we are..... I agree - personally I've been over the moon with recent ESC contest results, because I haven't supported the UK since 2004 ... since then I've had a listen and chosen what I think are the best songs - funnily enough, I've always come out on top!! The UK attitude towards the competition is appauling - I wouldn't even care that people take the p*** as long as they weren't hypocritical enough to turn around the day after the competition and say 'oh well it was all political again' .. when actually, the songs I'd (/we'd all) pointed out 2 months ago as potential winners all finsihed top 5!!
