Kirsty MacColl - A New England

Madness - It Must Be Love

Blondie - Denis

Not this one however

Dollar - I Wanna Hold Your Hand :puke2:

My favourite version of Always On My Mind is Elvis', but what I like about The Pet Shop Boys is that they put their own stamp on it and took it in a different direction - it wasn't just a straight copy of the original and I like that.

agree with others here.... some are better

Kim Wilde - You Keep Me Hangin' On.......... sorry but the supremes orig was superb!

Tracey Ullman - They Don't Know

Kirsty MacColl - A New England

Madness - It Must Be Love............ id say equal, i really like labi sifres original

Blondie - Denis

the others werent a patch on the orig.

I have to totally disagree with you regarding:

Doctor & The Medics and Carol Hitchcock

Aerosmiths 'Come Together' is outstanding, far better than the original (which is hard to beat).

tbh theres quite afew of beatles tracks that were covered in the 60's that are equal to or superior to the original... that isnt a very common occurance.

joe cockers version of 'with a little help from my friends' is THE defining version for me..

cliff benett and the rebel rousers 'got to get you into my life' also is brilliant

st louis union 'girl' was good too

maybe the beatles were trying too hard to produce a quantity of quality music that in some cases they didnt do the best versions?... just a passing thought.

I only actually like two of those songs to begin with - New England and The Night. Loved Kirsty's New England and as much as I do like Soft Cell - I hate their version of The Night.

I really like Santana's cover of the Zombies' 'She's Not There'.

Didn't think many would agree with my choices  but I did forget one:

Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2 U - which is by far and away superior to the original (as far as I'm concerned)

nothing wrong with personal preferances m8....

i tend to believe though that the first version of a track you hear tends to be your fav... its the one you get used too.

I think I do like Carpenters cover of "Breaking Up is Hard to Do" instead of the Neil Sedaka original's version...I have never heard the original version of "Please Mr. Postman" by The Marvelletes but Carps cover is better than the beatles one.

I fully agree with you here Rob - Another good version of GIRL was by a group called The Truth that was out at the same time as St. Louis Union but it peaked at only #27.

Another one was Wilson Pickett's version of Hey Jude in 1969. This peaked at #16.

Here's some that I prefer to the originals....

HIM - Solitary Man/Wicked Game (they also do a fantastically Gothic version of "Don't Fear The Reaper", but Blue Oyster Cult's orig still edges it for me...)

Jesus and Mary Chain - Guitar Man (PISSES on Elvis...)

Johnny Cash - Hurt (I love Nine Inch Nails, but Johnny was just so near death at this stage, and his covering of this song just so right, barely raising his voice above a cracked whisper - more reciting the lyrics as poetry than actually singing - it just touched me more emotionally than Trent's version did. I was honestly almost in tears)

Sid Vicious - My Way (just bloody HILARIOUS  )

Ministry - What A Wonderful World (The last song they played from the last show they'll ever do in London.. So, yeah, it had poignance and a touch of melancholy, even though it was PUNK ROCK AS FUKK... :w00t: )

The Clash - Bank Robber/I Fought The Law

A Perfect Circle - Imagine (Done in a completely different key, sounding far more downbeat, the lyrics tinged with darkness and melancholy rather than hope.. But then, considering the times we are living in now, as opposed to a spirit of Detente which punctuated Lennon's original, what the fukk is there to be positive about.....?)

I prefer the Creepers' cover of "Baby's On Fire" to Brian Eno's original.

Don't know if many people have heard either version though :D
