Nothing much here at the moment, however I'll update the list of un/confirmed participants every now and then.

Semi final #1: 12 May 2009

Semi final #2: 14 May 2009

Final: 16 May 2009

Confirmed entrants

Greece: Sakis Rouvas - Song TBC

Netherlands: Toppers - Songs TBC

Likely returns

Slovakia - Expressed interest in 2008, ran out of money so are likely to compete this year for the first time since 1998.

Unlikely returns

Austria - Still got the hump...

Italy - Only participated once since 1993 - in 1997 - finished fourth then but show no sign of returning.

Monaco - Not been in it in the past two years, haven't openly expressed interest in returning following three semi-final flops.

Possible debuts

Kazakhstan - Become EBU members in September, but aren't bordered in the "EBU region", whatever that means.

Kosovo - Not an EBU member yet, and many countries including Russia don't recognise them as a proper country, so 2010 or 2011 is probably more likely.

Possible withdrawals

Andorra - Will decide in September.

Poland - Deciding in October whether or not they want to participate.

San Marino - Will decide before the end of the year.

They border Russia, don't they? So they are bordering the EBU region... I must be missing something huge here...

But you're right, never too early to start planning! :D

c**p, the final is on Da's birthday :( I might not be able to watch it!!!

And to think that the very first contest in 1956 was held in Austria but the winner was Switzerland

well as my dad said - why dont they go all the way and invite China into the competition  (tho i think technically Kazakhstan is about 0.0000000000000006% in Europe - so thats greater than San Marino and Monaco combined

It was held in Switzerland...Austria weren't even participating.

I can see Switzerland pulling out soon as well though.

Along with Belgium and the Netherlands. :( Still, at least Turkey and Armenia's diaspora votes will go down a bit!

I think the Russians will do a great job with this. The stage better be HUGE. :P

EDIT: Question. Will the same countries always be in the same semi's?

Nah the semi-final draw will be done again I think. And I can see Russia winning again next year tbh. I know it's an early bet but I really can. :o They'll come up with something huge no doubt, and I reckon their venue could be almost as big as the Parken in Copenhagen in 2001. And I reckon the United Kingdom will get top ten next year too. I think the BBC will finally realise that 'X Factor' rejects are not the way forward...

Well next year we should send something like:

Fatima Spar and the Freedom Fries!!!!

tho if Austria gets to the Freedom Fries first maybe we should send..

萨顶顶

Sa Ding Ding (the Chinese Bjork - because no ones gonna be nasty to China are they...would be 'bad' karma if they did...)

And I reckon the United Kingdom will get top ten next year too. I think the BBC will finally realise that 'X Factor' rejects are not the way forward...

Can you send whatever you're on to Preston, please?

but you can't change the UK public's votes...if we have the choice of five unknowns with great songs and Ray Quinn with a terrible song, you know exactly who would go through

Maybe it's just wishful thinking, but I actually think the BBC might put some effort in and not just be thinking about the pound signs. I reckon they might get an artist and make us choose between a few songs like we always used to with Cliff Richard and Olivia Newton John and people. Didn't Olivia have some big rant after she believed the public had chosen the wrong song or something?

Malta and Norway now confirmed for next year.

Malta have to send Chiara. :arrr:

Why would Poland withdraw? You'd think they'd at least be happy they got into the final!

Apparently they were moaning about all the former USSR countries voting for each other and all that... But weren't they part of the Soviet Union for a bit themselves?!
