an interesting year, i got married! but a year i quite enjoyed and a year with some quality pop music.

1 Donald Fagen - New fronteer a radio hit, but failed to make much impression chartwise

2 Jimmy the Hoover - Tantalise (wo wo ee yeh yeh) what a brilliant name! and a super happytime one hit wonder, a summery track to match the hot summer of 83.

3 Maisonettes - Heartache avenue sounding more 60's then anything in the 60's did, another one hit wonder which imho was superb!

4 Orange Juice - Rip it up a great track.

5 Haysi Fantayzee - Shiny shiny good times come too me now... dj jeremy healys first outfit

6 Wham! - Club tropicana george certainly knew how to write good pop.

7 Kajagogo - Big apple thought this was a good un from an unexpected scource!

8 Haircut 100 - Nobodys fool another good un from an unexpected scource, love the stopming beat.

9 Aztec Camera - Oblivi.o.u.s odd way of spelling it, dunno why, but a good upbeat track.

10 Lotus Eaters - First picture of you name taken from a tv serial of the same name.

11 Tracey Ullman - They dont know , ok been mentioned recently but so what! i love it!

12 Joboxers - Just got lucky their lesser known hit but imho their best. i wonder why they packed up?

This was the year I started to get obsessed by music!

The Alarm - 68 Guns Brilliant anthem from the Welsh Clash wannabes

The Cure - The Lovecats First Cure song I had really got into

New Order - Blue Monday This is genius!

The Style Council - Long Hot Summer Lovely summer track

Orange Juice - Rip It Up Still love this

Herbie Hancock - Rockit Ground breaking track with the most memorable video that year

The Smiths - This Charming Man The start of a love affair with The Smiths

The Pretenders - 2000 Miles Great track from one of my favourite albums

The Rolling Stones - Undercover of the Night Possibly the last great single from them

Simple Minds - Waterfront Loved the brooding nature of this track

David Bowie - Let's Dance My favourite artist of the time and he was at number one!

The Assembly - Never Never Sublime meeting of Vince Clarke and Feargal Sharkey

For me:

1. The Smiths - This Charming Man - A timeless classic from the most important British band of the 1980s.

2. New Order - Blue Monday - The biggest selling 12" single of all-time.

3. Police - Every Breath You Take - Taken from their final studio album Synchronicity, this deservedly became their biggest ever hit single>

4. Depeche Mode - Everything Counts - This was there first single to chart in the USA. A superb take on Yuppieism.

5. Yazoo - Nobody's Diary - Alison & Vince's farewell single (first time around).

6. Heaven 17 - Temptation - A timeless classic featuring the female vocals of Carole Kenyon.

7. Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) - It is easy to see why Annie & Dave scored a USA#1 hit with this synth-pop classic.

8. Lotus Eaters - First Picture Of You - How did this track fail to be a big Top 5 hit remains a mystery to me.

9. Siouxsie & the Banshees - Dear Prudence - This gothic take on the John Lennon White Album track is the best ever cover of a Beatles song.

10. Thompson Twins - Hold Me Now - I just love this track from one of the 1980s most underrated acts.

11. Altered Images - Don't Talk To Me About Love - Clare Grogan & co's last Top 10 hit.

12. David Bowie - China Girl - Thanks to Nile Rogers production, David reworked this song originally written for his friend Iggy Pop.

9 Aztec Camera - Oblivi.o.u.s odd way of spelling it, dunno why, but a good upbeat track.

Where was it spelt like that? Not on my copy anyway.

I'd swap Thompson Twins for The Assembly and I'd put 'Bring Me Closer' in instead of 'DTTMAL' for Altered Images (hmm..was Bring Me Closer 1984, though?), other than that - this would be my album of 1983...I think we bought the same records that year ;)

i was using a guiness book of the charts.... however in the gb bhs its spelt normally... so i think the book i used was wrong. ive never seen it spelt in that way, but guiness seem to change things with every copy of their book... brackets here, then not, featured artists where there was none, etc.. i just figured this might be the latest case of guiness being over zealous..
