I'm only going to do this from 1996 to now, as that was the year that I started watching, and I don't really know any songs from before that aside from the obvious ones - Cliff, ABBA, Bucks Fizz etc. I'll keep updating this over the next few weeks, and I'll try and get an ESC performance video for each. I'll do a re-cap in this thread.

50. Xandee - One Life

Country: Belgium

Year: 2004

Total points: 7

Final placing: 22nd out of 24

This song had so much potential, it really did. :( It was an insanely catchy song, and at 9/1 was one of the pre-contest favourites. Its flop wasn't too surprising though, given that the girl couldn't hold a note to save her life in her final performance, and only five points from the Netherlands and two others from two other countries saved her from repeating Jemini's feat the year before. Aside from that hideous performance, I do really like the song. ^_^ I think I voted for it on May 15th 2004, but then I hadn't actually seen the performances that night so had no idea how terrible she had been! All the same, position #50 is a reasonable placing for it to be in in my top 50 songs from 1996-2008.

49. Claudia Beni - Vise Nisam Tvoja

Country: Croatia

Year: 2003

Total points: 29

Final placing: 15th out of 26

This is a catchy little number, and at the time it was my second favourite after Turkey I think. ^_^ I'm not so keen on it now, but I still like it and the performance on the night was very interesting... as was her dress. I thought it'd do a bit better than it did tbh, as it started quite strongly and was quite near the top I seem to remember, however its odds were only at 80/1 by the time of the contest. I don't think Croatia have sent anything as good since this either really... they've gone quite downhill in the past few years really. :( There are two more Croatian songs in my top 50 to come, and there are only three countries who have more than three entries in my chart. ^_^

48. Gisela - Casanova

Country: Andorra

Year: 2008

Total points: 22

Semi final placing: 16th out of 19

It was a real shame that this song failed to qualify for the final last week. :( This was the only real disappointment I felt after the two semi-finals, as 'Casanova' is a cracking tune. The Eurovision's been very unkind to Andorra since they entered, and despite this being the first song to be selected back in December 2007, it was really considered as much of a contender. Live vocals let Gisela down too, a bit like Beth in 2003 for Spain, but even so I think 16th out of 19 was a bit harsh on the girl. This is the sole Andorran entry in my top 50, but it'd be nice if they could deliver something decent next year. ^_^

47. DJ Bobo - Vampires Are Alive

Country: Switzerland

Year: 2007

Total points: 40

Semi final placing: 20th from 28

The studio version of this is good, however when sung on stage it looks and sounds like a complete load of rubbish. Two tuneless freaks rambling on about vampires coming alive whilst being surrounded by bizarre dancers and a load of manikins is not the best way to go for a Eurovision entry. It was, however, one of the pre contest favourites both with myself and leading bookmakers, but in hindsight it's unsurprising that this didn't get many votes. A ten from Malta is the highest it got, but we all know that the Maltese tend to choose different songs to the rest of Europe to get their "douze"! I do listen to the studio version often, but this should never have been entered to the Eurovision now tbh. :(

46. Hara & Andreas Konstandinou - Mana Mou

Country: Cyprus

Year: 1997

Total points: 98

Final placing: 5th out of 25

This cool little song wouldn't look out of place in the Eurovision nowadays tbh, and would still do as well as it did 11 years ago I feel. It's one of the few songs that I really like from the 1997 contest, and one that I listen to every now and then. ^_^ The song was performed first, and did reasonably well with the juries and televoters. It's the only Cypriot entry in my top 50, as I don't feel they've really produced too many greats since... if any. A deserved top five finish, although this was in a time when ALL of the top five got there on merit of their songs alone...

great start! like all five

Vise Nisam Tvoja is so so great  was a top ten hit in my chart back in the day...I agree that Cyprus and Croatia have gone downhill recently :(

45. Vanilla Ninja - Cool Vibes

Country: Switzerland

Year: 2005

Total points: 128

Final placing: 8th out of 24

This song should've got more than 128 points tbh, as this was a good performance of a good song also performing near the end of the night. I suppose this is where you need to be representing Russia or someone to get a better result... Vanilla Ninja did get the maximum points from Estonia though, probably due to them being an Estonian band! They were one of the pre-contest favourites I believe, and I really liked the song at the time, and still think it's a decent enough one now. ^_^ One of 2005's best probably.

44. Charlotte Perrelli - Hero

Country: Sweden

Year: 2008

Total points: 47

Final placing: 18th out of 25

So Charlotte came back for another crack in 2008, and the song certainly didn't disappoint in my opinion. Unfortunately for her, the rest of Europe seemed to disagree and thought it was pretty poor; the song certainly didn't live up to most bookmakers' predictions, and she failed to emulate her success back in 1999. Still, 'Hero' is a decent song, but I don't think it's as good as Sweden's 2006 song from Carola. Let's hope the Swedes bounce back with some a little less schlagerfied next year!

43. Mando - Never Let You Go

Country: Greece

Year: 2003

Total points: 25

Final placing: 17th out of 26

This was a completely unfair flop in 2003! This leather-packed song totally deserved more than a less than impressive 25 points. A great song and a great performance should surely constitute a great finishing position? Well, I don't suppose the Greeks are complaining, since they've not left the top ten in the five contests that have followed - including one victory and two third placings. All the same, this was one of my favourites from the year that Jemini flopped for the United Kingdom, but it seemed inevitable it wouldn't do very well. A great shame, but a memorable performance from Mando!

42. Serebro - Song #1

Country: Russia

Year: 2007

Total points: 207

Final placing: 3rd out of 24

The standard was pretty high last year, and this song was definately amongst the best, and well worthy of its third placed finish. Serebro were many people's favourites to win, and they were pretty close to Serbia and Ukraine for much of the scoring. They've appeared with a few decent follow-ups as well since they represented their country, and even graced the BJSC. :o The Russian standard won't be going any lower in years to come either...

41. Doris Dragovic - Marija Magdalena

Country: Croatia

Year: 1999

Total points: 118

Final placing: 4th out of 23

This is a cracking song from Croatia, this is. It's a shame they got deducted a third of their points really, as this is a quality song. I think I voted for this actually, come to think of it, and it's Croatia's best finishing position at the Eurovision ever, aside from the Yugoslavian victory in 1989. Doris had actually previously entered for Yugoslavia I think, but came back for more with this 'Diva' inspired song. If you look closely at the end of the video, you'll also see she has nastily stubbily armpits. :(

I've always wondered how many points Croatia scored originally if they had a third deducted...would they have beaten Charlotte?

love Serebro, Charlotte and Vanilla Ninja

Cool Vibes was my favourite 2005 entry :D

They only had a third deducted for the purposes of calculating relegation - their final points in the contest stayed the same ^_^
  • Author
Yeah their total points without the deduction was 118, if you include the deduction they had about 78 I think.

40. Alsou - Solo

Country: Russia

Year: 2000

Total points: 155

Final placing: 2nd out of 24

This song never really stood out for me on the night of the final, but it's actually a very good song. ^_^ I must say though even now I'm surprised it managed second, as I think there was definately more than one better song in the contest - and Denmark wasn't one of them! I seem to remember that whenever she got a 12 from anyone, she was shown bouncing around and clearly trying to get her t*ts to fly out of that gold dress, and very nearly succeeded. Good stuff though. ^_^

 she was only 16 at the time too! I bought her 2001 single Before You Love Me  amazing, underrated pop song

Solo wasn't bad either :D
