39. Kalomoira - Secret Combination

Country: Greece

Year: 2008

Total points: 218

Final placing: 3rd out of 25

For a while, it seemed like this song was in with a real chance of winning this year. :o Shame it all ended so abruptly, but 'Secret Combination' is certainly a good song, even going to #71 in the United Kingdom. It never really got me before the contest, but I really like the performance, and this year was the sixth year in a row that Greece have sent a genuinly good song. Take note UK!

38. Vania Fernandes - Senhora Do Mar

Country: Portugal

Year: 2008

Total points: 69

Final placing: 13th out of 25

This song certainly deserved another couple of hundred points to go with its 69, and had it been performed at the end again, I think it could well have done that. It's such a great, haunting ballad that deserved to emulate the success of 'Molitva' from 2007. I was so pleased when the final envelope was opened and Portugal were revealed too, would've been a tragedy had it not gone through! Still, at least it was Portugal's first finalist appearance since 2003. Their last top ten appearance was way back in 1996 though...

Country: Bosnia-Herzegovina

Year: 2007

Final placing: 11th out of 24

I only really got into this song after the contest, and after Marija's shockingly good finish. :o This was predicted by many - including myself - to be amongst the bottom few, but a great performance of a fairly strong song ensured this was going to be another successful year for the Bosnians. And the Herzegovinans. They've been in the final every year since 2001, and I can see them being the next Balkan country to win the contest, whenever that may be.

Country: Ireland

Final placing: 2nd out of 25

And so Ireland's only entry in my top 50 comes in at just #36. This is, however, a cracking song. Definately deserving of its runner-up position, and the only decent song Ireland have sent in the past 12 compeitions in my opinion. Brian Kennedy was alright, but nowhere near the quality of this. It was joint favourite with Katrina to win the 1997 contest, just ahead of Jalisse of Italy, and the bookies certainly weren't wrong. This came some 70 points behind the United Kingdom, but some way ahead of Turkey and the Italians who were third and fourth respectively.

 at "Solo" comment

I really want Greece to win now, or Ukraine even :(

Is there gonna be Lejla in the list :o :naughty:

35. Nicki French - Don't Play That Song Again

Country: United Kingdom

Year: 2000

Total points: 28

Final placing: 16th out of 24

Haha I must say I do like this song. Why she had to show off her belly though I'll never know... not as if she had the most ab-tastic stomach really was it? I think it should've done better than 28 points really, when you see the rubbish that did better this year - Turkey, Germany, Ireland, MACEDONIA. How the f*** did that Macedonian song get one more point than Nicki French? :( Sorry Boyan, but XXL were really awful. This was one of the pre-contest favourites, actually priced at 2/1 just before the contest, trailing only Estonia at 6/4... But the bookies were rather inaccurate. Denmark were at 125/1!

And the award for most bizarre looking, strangely dressed person goes to... Hmm, well I always thought this was a good song, but it never really captivated me until after she'd won. It's a great song, and definately the best song in the 2007 contest. Had we sent Cyndi, as we should've done that year, things might've been a little different, but I guess we'll never know. -_- I love the panpipe thing in the middle too. Excellent song, and thank God Verka didn't win!

^ MEH, don't like the song much from that year

EDIT: Nicki's one i mean

shame VERKA hadn't won :P

One of my friends was seriously thinking Maria was a man until she performed on the Russian NF in March  I swear!

Now had this been in tune, I think it could've given Belgium, Russia and Turkey a run for their money. 81 points when putting in a Jemini/XXL style off-key performance is pretty good going. Though tbf, she wasn't quite as bad. And if Croatia got deducted a third for having a so-called male voice in their song in 1999, I think the "oh oh oh-oh" things at the start of this song, and all the way through it should surely count as having extra voices on the backing track! This was one of the pre-contest faves both with fans and the bookies, and Spain have only had one top ten finish since then. Mind you, that's two better than the UK have managed...

I wish I'd put a couple of quid on the Olsens! as I said earlier, this really sounded like Steps had rejected it...it was about 2 or 3 years out of date as well, but you're right, there was far far worse on offer in 2000!

Cyndi wouldn't have beaten Marija :heehee: my sister had said to me that she was certain this would win just before the contest, but I didn't listen to her and put my money on Belarus :(

How this didn't win in 2001 I will never know! That Estonian song was very mediocre tbh, and this had everything going for it - performing last being top of the pile! It's an amazing song tbh, that accordian or whatever they're called adds to its greatness too. The 2001 contest is probably my favourite of all time actually, aside from 1997 or 1998 maybe, the presenters just made it! This song was one of the favourites to win along with Slovenia, the United Kingdom (), Greece, Sweden and France.

2001 was also my favourite contest, and I absolutely loved this, in fact I have it on single :o I was happy with the result though as Everybody was my favourite song :D tbh though all of the top five deserved to win

31. Zeljko Joksimovic - Lane Moje

Country: Serbia & Montenegro

Final placing: 2nd out of 24

I think this is the best Serbia has ever offered us. Better than 'Molitva' I feel, and definately better than that Bosnian dirge that appeared a few years later in 'Leilja'. There's your answer Pavel. :P It would've been nice had this song won, but I think Ruslana was probably a bit more memorable. This song's performance in the semi-final though I think shows that running order perhaps does matter... it was on near the end of the semi and came above the Ukrainians. :o Odds weren't that low though at 12/1, but it was all about Sakis and Ruslana in the bookmakers' eyes in 2004.
