What confuses me is what made Warner think that Shirley WAS going to be getting the pom-poms and mini-skirts out?

Garbage had already experimented with pop. I personally liked the Beautiful album, but am pretty much alone on that. It was their least successful album critically and commercially, and there was an obvious attempt with the following Bleed Like Me album to move back to the rock roots. I believe Shirley herself has been quoted as saying some of the Beautiful tracks are her least favourite. Two of the four singles from the album were deliberately excluded from the hits collection last year.

So given all that, why on earth were the Warner label execs sitting there expecting Gwen Stefani Mark II?

Yeah, exactly... I just do NOT understand these idiots' thinking..... Garbage sold 12 million albums in total, almost two-thirds of that sales total comes from their darker, rockier, more "alternative" first two albums, so, really you just have to think WTF????? I'm baffled, I'm incensed, I'm disgusted..... Shirley is NOT and NEVER WAS gonna be Gwen Stefani MkII.......

I was a huge fan of the first two albums, I just wasn't so keen on the Pop direction that "Beautiful" took, and considering, ironically, that their popularity waned somewhat, I reckon I'm vindicated in thinking that.... Garbage were at their best when they were an "alt-rock" band with a hint of Goth.....

Beautifulgarbage was indeed too poppy but you can find some great songs like Parade, Cherry Lips, Cup of Coffee or Shut Your Mouth (Parade esp. reminds me their first two albums).

BG seems to be like a solo album of Shirley, not the result of the whole band. They took the risk to made something too different and to release it right on that sad week of 9/11...

That was a shock to critics (maybe they expected Version 3.0 :D )

I was a huge fan of the first two albums

Both albums are perfect!

And I absolutely ADORE Shirley, she's got guts, integrity (which she'sproven by telling Warners to go fukk themselves and refusing to dumb-down her art...) and attitude... My idea of the quintissential Diva....

Same here!

She's amazing and special ^_^

There aren't many singers like her (only PJ Harvey, Siouxsie Sioux, Karen O and Chrissie Hynde are close).

If Warner expect another Gwen-like pop from Shirley, they would better leave the music industry and leave us alone

Besides, I dont think that you really have to be a "fan" of Garbage as such to be morally incensed by what has happened to Shirley's solo album and the position that Warners has taken.... I'll always defend the rights of the artist to express themselves, no matter who they may be.....

true!

what they did with her album is called censorship

what they did with her album is called censorship

Exactly what I think.... I think we should all be as outraged by a Corporation doing this as some Right-Wing bunch of nuts like the PMRC (Parents Musical Resource Centre, once headed by Tipper Gore, wife of ex-Vice President Al Gore, they were an utter thorn in the flesh of all music fans in the 1980s.... Mind you, Al Gore pretty much put a kibosh on his wife's activities in the PMRC when he became VP....  ) who come along and attempt something similar.... In effect, it IS the same thing... Warners might not be shelving her album for moral reasons, but censorsh!t is censorsh!t....
