Gary Pepper Elvis archives to be auctioned:

Leslie Hindman Auctioneers announces a once in a lifetime opportunity for Elvis Presley collectors and fans.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y48/elvis1959/garypepper_Memwedding2.jpg

Over the years many collectors have asked, “Whatever happened to the Gary Pepper collection of Elvis Presley memorabilia?” Early in his career, Presley befriended Gary Pepper, a young man with cerebral palsy, who ultimately became a close friend and the president of one of the King's first fan clubs, allowing him to amass a significant collection of personal effects gifted to him from Presley himself.

When Pepper moved to California, he left the majority of his collection to his friend and nurse, who was originally hired by Elvis to look after Gary. Hopeful that collectors and fans can enjoy the memorabilia so treasured by Gary Pepper (shown opposite with Elvis and Priscilla at their wedding), she has recently decided to sell the collection at auction.

Untouched for over three decades, this special collection will be offered for sale at Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, Sunday, October 18th, 2009 with a public exhibition Thursday, October 15th through Saturday, October 17th. A portion of the proceeds from the auction will be donated to United Cerebral Palsy of the Mid-South.

Highlights from the auction include clothing worn by Elvis Presley, a large lock of Presley’s hair, a telegram sent to Gary while Elvis was in the Army, Christmas cards to Gary from Priscilla and Elvis, a significant collection of Elvis LPs and 45s, two near mint Sun records, as well as numerous 45s from Presley's own juke box, autographed record sleeves, an incredible selection of souvenirs, movie stills and Graceland ephemera, and other memorabilia from celebrities such as signed photographs of the Jackson Five and Marilyn Monroe.

Additionally, the auction will include hundreds of candid photographs of Elvis, including photos documenting some of the most intimate moments in Presley’s life and career such as his return home from the Army, his wedding to Priscilla, Lisa Marie’s first days home from the hospital, and other photos taken at Graceland. Many of these images were taken by Gary Pepper with a Polaroid camera that Elvis gave him early in their friendship. A number of these original photographs were featured in The Tankcaster, the newsletter for Elvis’ fan club known as “The Tankers,” which are included in the auction as well as the Polaroid camera itself.

While Elvis’ life has been well documented, the intimate photographs and items in this sale give collectors and historians a new glimpse into Elvis’ life and character through his enduring friendship with Gary from the early days of his career until his death. Thirty two years after his death, this collection presents a remarkable post-script to Elvis’ life and legacy.

Elvis Last Vegas Guitar For Sale

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y48/elvis1959/auction-d-28-last-vegas-guitar-elvi.jpg

The guitar played by Elvis Presley in his final Las Vegas show is on offer in an auction of Hollywood memorabilia through iCollector.com. The Martin D-28 guitar was played by 'The King' during a performance at the Las Vegas Hilton in December 1976.

This Martin D-28 model guitar (serial number 361827), was used by Elvis in his last Las Vegas stage performances at the Las Vegas Hilton from December 2-12, 1976. In January, 1977 Elvis presented this guitar to his bodyguard, Sam Thompson. Following Elvis’ death, Thompson sold the guitar in 1978 to The National Enquirer to fund his college education. The National Enquirer presented “The Elvis Guitar” to Cheryl Schmerr who won a national contest of over 60,000 entries in a well-publicized event hosted by the tabloid.

The guitar, with original case, is accompanied by a notarized letter signed by Sam Thompson, along with a notarized copy of a letter from Elvis’ father, Vernon E. Presley, dated January 4, 1978, attesting that his son gave Thompson the Martin D-28 the previous year while at Graceland. Also comes with a color photograph of Elvis performing on stage with this guitar.

On the back of the guitar is some plastic residue where the belt on Elvis's jumpsuit melted because of the heat of the stage lighting.

Described as 'one of the most significant guitars to ever reach the market', the lot is expected to sell for up to £50,000.

Chicago house to auction Elvis hair: :w00t:

Elvis Presley's hair, at least a clump of hair that Presley may have lost to an Army barber when he went into the service back in 1958, is going on the auction block this Sunday at Leslie Hindman Auctioneers in Chicago.

The hair is part of a collection of more than 200 items that belonged to or are associated with Presley. There are clothes he wore, scarves he threw to screaming fans — who judging by the yellow sweat stains, never washed them — and Christmas cards he sent. And there are lots of records, some he kept in his own juke box, and other sorts of memorabilia ranging from Elvis dolls to Elvis wrist watches to Elvis Pez dispensers.

All the items belonged to Gary Pepper. No Hound Dog, Pepper was not only a huge Presley fan and president of a Presley fan club, but a close friend, as many of the photographs of the two together suggest.

Pepper, who had cerebral palsy, died in 1980, three years after Presley, and left his collection to his nurse, and that is who is putting the items up for auction, said Mary Williams, of the auction house.

But it is clearly the hair that has generated the most buzz.

Like a lot of the items in Pepper's collection, the hair was a gift from Presley to Pepper, who in turn sent a strand or two to appreciative Presley fans from time to time but didn't come close to exhausting his supply.

She said Pepper died without telling anyone exactly where the hair came from or when it was cut, but she said it appears that it was clipped during Presley's stint in the Army or around that time.

Williams did acknowledge that there has never been a DNA test done on the hair. But, she said, the auction house did take it to "somewhat of a hair authenticator" who compared it to his own sample of Presley's hair and concluded it was the real deal.

"I'm very careful with the hair I authenticate," said John Reznikoff. A Connecticut collector of such mundane items as stamps and documents, Reznikoff also has samples of hair that once sat atop some of the most famous heads in history, from George Washington to Abraham Lincoln, Napoleon, Albert Einstein and Marilyn Monroe. He even says he has some of Michael Jackson's hair that was famously singed during the filming of a Pepsi commercial in 1984.

"I have a high resolution scan and I took mine (Presley hair sample) out and the coarseness and color of it, they all match," he said.

"I did say short of a DNA test proving otherwise," he explained.

What that kind of testing means to collectors remains to be seen. But while the hair as it's displayed on white tissue paper may just look somewhat like the aerial view of Moe Howard, it could be worth a lot of money.

Williams said she doesn't know what to expect, saying that the best estimate is that the hair is worth $8,000-$12,000. But, she quickly added, a few years back some of Presley's hair that had been collected by his barber was put up for bid and sold for $115,000.

"The industry of hair collecting has blown up," she said.

So, who would want it? "There's an interest in owning a piece of a celebrity," she said. Or perhaps make one of your own.

"There's a possibility that people think you could clone people from hair," she said.

Ginger Alden Sells Her Engagement Ring

Ginger Alden who was Elvis' current girlfriend at the time of his death is selling her engagement ring which Elvis gave her. Here is the description with the ring which is being auctioned off in November.

Elvis Presley's Diamond Ring to Ginger Alden. Ginger Alden, Elvis' fiancee, first met Elvis Presley in 1961, when she was just 5 years old. Her father had been been Presley's induction officer when the musician joined the Army in 1958, and the Rock legend had invited the family out for an evening at the local fair.

The two were introduced 15 years later in 1976. During their courtship, Presley often introduced Ginger and her family during his performances, including his last televised appearance in 1977. He had planned to announce their engagement publicly on his upcoming tour in Memphis; sadly, he died before this could happen.

Ginger describes the scene thusly: "In December of 1976, Elvis Presley performed what would be his last shows in Las Vegas, and he invited me to accompany him. Seated on his bed inside of the penthouse suite at the Las Vegas Hilton hotel, Elvis called me in, asked me to sit down, close my eyes, and hold out my hand. I felt a ring being slipped on my finger. I was stunned when I opened my eyes and he asked me to hold out my other hand and he slid this gold and diamond ring onto that finger. Elvis loved jewelry, wanted me to share that love and I wore this many times in Las Vegas and afterwards."

The ring features 15 round brilliant cut diamonds with a total weight of 1 kt. in a 14 kt. yellow gold setting with a weight of 11.8 grams. Two of the diamonds are chipped, otherwise the ring is in Excellent condition. Estimate: $30,000 US Dollars - up.

I'm still not convinced that, had he lived, Elvis would have married Ginger <_< Mind you, I would love to have that ring - can imagine all the comments I would get if I turned up at school with that rock on my finger :w00t:

Auction Trouble - Updated (Again)

The estate of a man who claimed to be a personal friend of Elvis Presley is suing the man's caretaker for stealing collectibles, including Elvis' gold jumpsuit.

According to the complaint, Sterling Gary Pepper was a personal friend of Elvis Presley (misspelled "Pressley" throughout the complaint) and President of his fan club, known as the Tankers. Over the years, the complaint states, Presley gave Pepper various items, including "a gold jumpsuit with a black collar, hair of Mr. Pressley, a 1957 Chevy automobile, clothes worn by Mr. Pressley, and numerous articles of fan club and personal memorabilia including autographed photographs of celebrities such as Marilynn Monroe and Clark Gable."

The plaintiff John Tate, described as Pepper's closest relative, asserts that Pepper had cerebral palsy and Elvis Presley hired Nancy Pease Whitehead to care for him. But, after Presley's death, when it was clear Whitehead would no longer be paid, Pepper was moved first to a home in Iowa and then to California to be near his relatives. After Pepper arrived in California, Tate went to Pepper's home in Tennesee and realized that all of his belongings, including the memorabilia, had been removed by Whitehead.

For years, Tate did not know where the memorabilia had gone until learning of the recently scheduled auction by the other defendant named in the lawsuit, Leslie Hindman Auctioneers. Now, Tate is suing for, among other things, restoration of the property at issue.

Update October 18, 2009:

The auction will go on as planned Sunday after a Chicago judge allowed the sale in spite of an objection by a man claiming to be a relative of one of Elvis' personal friends. The auction is at noon at Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, 1338 W. Lake.

Update October 19, 2009:

The Gary Pepper Auction was an unbelievable success. Items sold for over 20 times their estimated value. There’s no doubt that the media attention for the ‘quiff of Elvis’ triggered the interest of collectors all over the world. Staff members of ElvisMatters were among the successful bidders and we’re proud to put some of these items on display in our shop soon! Among the eye catchers of this auction were letters by Elvis’s grandfather (1,000 $US), his hair (15,000), a Sun 78 rpm record (7,320 $US) and an EP Monogrammed Cream Collared Cotton Shirt which was estimated between 2,000 $US and 4,000 $US and ultimately sold for $62,800 $US – 20/25% buyer’s premium not included.

Marty Lacker Elvis Photo Collection being auctioned:

For twenty years Marty Lacker was a close friend of Elvis Presley and for a number of years was his right hand man or as Elvis and The Memphis Mafia called it, “The Foreman”.

Through those years Marty took some great candid pictures of Elvis and the MM in various situations and he was also given many pictures by other people who shot them.

There are some great never before seen pictures of various places and times that Elvis and the guys enjoyed within those 20 years. He also has a couple of pictures of Elvis’ jewelry that Elvis gave to Marty as well as pictures that include a few other stars that knew Elvis taken with Elvis or the guys with them.

We are calling them a collection because Marty has decided to sell all 210 pictures, one of the largest photo collections related to Elvis and he is selling them as a total 210 picture package. This is not a sale of individual pictures.

Over 98 percent of the pictures are casual candids just a few are professionally posed pictures. They are both 8x10’s and snapshot size. It is a great mixture and one that any fan or Elvis or photograph devotee would love to have.

Judging from a recent auction of Elvis items in Chicago, a few pictures of Elvis’ wedding went quickly and for big money ($6,000), therefore anyone interested in this one of a kind super collection that also includes Elvis' wedding pictures that Marty was the Co-Best Man at, we advise to get your bid in quickly. Compared to that auction price for just a few pictures this collection is a big bargain.

By the way the picture shown is only half of the collection, there are still much more snapshot size pictures that are not shown. There are more snapshots then 8x10's.

From the eBay description:

The collection also includes pictures of Elvis' wedding where Marty served as Elvis' co-Best Man, pictures of the inside and outside of Graceland with Elvis and the guys. Pictures on movie sets and locations. Pictures of a few of Elvis' close relatives not seen before. Plus so many more different situations. Over 98 percent of the pictures are casual candids just a few are professionally posed pictures. They are both 8x10's and snapshot size. Autographed Co Star Picture Collection For Sale

Marty Lacker, Elvis Presley's former right hand man and friend for 20 years is offering for a "Buy It Now" sale of a special 30 picture collection of autographed pictures of many of Elvis' movie co-stars.

These include Ann Margret (picture), Shelley Fabares and many more. Plus a couple of pictures given to Marty by music stars he knows like Jackie Wilson, Dionne Warwick, Jackie De Shannon and others. "Buy It Now" will cost you $3,000, which averages out to be just $100 per picture.

As in the past, Marty always reveals why he's selling anything. He and his family have lived in their home for over 20 years and as most homes of that age, major things break down and need to be replaced and the quickest way to pay for it he has found, is to sell something of his own that reflects his years with Elvis and at the same time share them with devoted Elvis fans to enjoy. He could probably hold out for much more money but as always he only asks the amount he needs to take care of what he needs to do.

Recently, Marty offered his personal collection of over 200 photo's of Elvis on ebay which sold for £1,757.71 [uS$2,950.00]. To grab this 30 picture collection of the stars that Marty met on the sets of Elvis' movies, go to eBay

Guess we'll have to wait to hear what actually did happen

Elvis Home Movie Fetches Nearly £4,000?

Confusing news!

The Gazette & Herald mentions:

The film of personal moments at home between Elvis Presley and his wife Priscilla fetched £3,700 at an auction in Devizes today. The buyer will never be able to show the movie in public, or at least charge for the privilege, as the copyright was not included in the sale.

Nevertheless, bidding was keen at Aldridge's saleroom at the Bath Road Business Centre in Devizes today. The film was eventually knocked down to a telephone bid from the United States for £3,200 plus 15 per cent buyer's premium.

The film was one of a score or more of items originally from the collection of Jimmy Velvet, who sold off his Elvis Presley Museum collection in 1994. Bidding was also fierce on a tiny reddish brown triangular guitar pick, or plectrum, used by The King during his final tour in 1977. It eventally went for £1,200. The original registration documents for Elvis's Harley Davidson motorbike fetched £1,500.

A tiny strand of Elvis's hair, just 12mm long and mounted in a gold disc, was sold for just £300. A similar item went for nearly £1,000 at Aldridge's last sale of Elvis memorabilia in November.

While the BBC site says:

Footage showing the moment Elvis and Priscilla Presley brought their baby daughter home for the first time has failed to sell at a Wiltshire auction. The reel of 16mm film showing intimate family moments lasts for 17 minutes and had been expected to fetch £4,000.

A guitar pick, used by Elvis on his final tour in 1977, sold to a British collector for nearly £1,300. A registration card for Elvis's 1966 Harley Davidson Motorcycle also sold for £1,400.

Auctioneer Andrew Aldridge said there was keen bidding for other items of Elvis memorabilia during Saturday's sale.

"The film didn't go this time - we'd thought it would raise between £3,000 and £5,000." But it was sold without copyright so it couldn't be publically shown. "If that wasn't the case you could have put an extra couple of zeros on the end of the guide price," he added.

The film had come from Jimmy Velvet, president of the Elvis Presley Museum, in Nashville, Tennessee. In the film Priscilla Presley explains it contains some of her precious memories of the days she had with Elvis. It shows Elvis and Priscilla at a party on the eve of their wedding in May 1967, as well as footage from the wedding at the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas. It also shows the Presleys arriving home from the hospital with Lisa Marie, and Elvis and Priscilla driving around Memphis waving at fans and holding their daughter to the window.
