Radio Personality, Former Presley Backup Singer Hugh Jarrett Dies

ATLANTA -- June 1, 2008: Hugh Jarrett, who sang bass as a member of Elvis

Presley's backup quartet, the Jordanaires, has died at age 78 of injuries he

sustained in a March 25 auto accident. Jarrett worked in radio in South

Carolina and Tennessee -- including a stint at WKDA/Nashville -- before

joining the Jordanaires in 1954, and when he left the quartet in 1958 he

returned to broadcasting, as "Big Hugh Baby," at WLAC/Nashville.

He later worked in Atlanta radio, at WPLO and WSB and at WFOM/Marietta, GA,

at WGGA/Gainesville, and at Country KBBQ/Los Angeles -- also working as an

MC at famed L.A. club the Palomino. Jarrett moved back to Atlanta for good

in 1970.

While continuing his radio career, Jarrett also had some success as an

actor, appearing in such TV series as In the Heat of the Night and in TV

movies.

Jarrett most recently hosted a Sunday-morning gospel show on WWEV/Cumming,

GA. He was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 1999, the Georgia

Music Hall of Fame in 2004, and the Georgia Radio Hall of Fame in 2007.

Cheers, Mark. The Jordanaires are legendary and it's so sad to hear Hugh has passed away :(
